"Easily the best choice and best for the high contrast low light in forest shots."

"It uses the same sensor as the Insta360 Ace Pro/Pro 2, but does the same trick as the A7SIII where it uses its excess megapixels to create a bayer within a bayer pattern, which culls noise like nothing else."

"Action 4 and 5 have a larger sensor than the GoPro, which 100% is the most important for underwater and low light environments."

"The rocksteady stabilisation is one of the best"

"I vastly prefer my Action 4 to my Hero 12. Better stabilisation and LUT as well as the front touch screen and magnetic mounts are the reasons. ... The stabilisation bit simply isn’t true as GoPros pan annoyingly which DJI doesn’t do. ... For my content (cars) the GoPro has annoying panning which makes the stabilised footage unusable. I hardly use it anymore. ... That’s a weird cope to admit that DJIs stabilisation works better under normal circumstances. Saying driving footage is “unintended use” is laughable."

"it has fantastic digital stabilization"

"I cannot get consistent image quality. Sometimes, in very rare occassions, I get a good footage. Not enough to use it for serious production, especially in lowlight situations."

"Only far subjects and broad day bright light it wants. ... Why can't you just pull put out the camera when you out and about and record, whether you are in the busy street or enter a mall."

"My old Samsung S9 shoots far far better, ie no blurry soft out of focus image. ... I just got this camera and it's horrible period. Always never in full focus, it won't even focus on your bike name, dashboard or a person's face. ... Try focus on the box it came it, it can't. ... Any camera that can't focus is trash, period."

"Mine works perfectly for selfies and group shorts, but is pretty useless for macro (action cams lack focusing)."

"File corruption is the norm. ... They have a tool to try to recover corrupted files. Yeah they had to build and release a dedicated tool for that. And it doesn't work."

I have a DJI Action 4 and it’s great. I do pov mountain biking videos and use it occasionally for an ultra wide shot in concert videos. Does well enough in low light. I’ve heard there’s no meaningful differences the 4 and 5.

I would choose action 5, but I'm heavily biased. I used to be a big-time gopro fanboy (used all the versions from 6 to 12), but they didn't make it very easy. Switched over to Osmo Action like a year ago and haven't looked back since. Gopro has always had a lot of overheating issues, corrupt files, crashing issues, super unresponsive UI, and horrible battery life. Sure, gopro does produce a little bit better quality video, but this is also arguable. action 5 has a bigger sensor and therefore a better lowlight performance, prolly also better dynamic range, but I haven't really checked that dynamic range data specifically. Gopro does a little bit larger bitrate, so yeah, gopro wins in resolution and technical quality, but osmo action has significantly better battery life, better low light performance, and OMG it's just sooo much more reliable. After using action 4 for 1 year, I've had 0 crashes and 0 overheating issues. Constantly got those issues with gopro. Stabilization is arguably better in gopro, but there isn't much difference to be honest Also action 5 quick release system is superior to gopro in every single way. Gopro has dji beat only in two things - maybe like 5% better picture quality, and brand recognition.

I have a phone gimbal (om7p) and action 4. Honestly, while gimbal is pretty cool at stabilizing footages it has draw backs. Phone gets pretty big and clunky with a gimbal on it and needs time to set it up even if you have magnetic quick release. So it is like good for a planed shot but not for a spontaneous quick recording, what I mostly use my phone ( suddenly something cam worthy but no cam on me). Action cam on the other hand is smaller than a phone alone, easy to pocket and it has fantastic digital stabilization. Also easy to set up for quick shoting. Powered off, press the record button and within 1-2 sec it starts recording. Draw back with the action cam is the action cam look. It is either ultra wild or if you dewarp and crop in it has lesser quality. As for the pocket 3? I only tried it in show rooms and it feels like combinations of the good things of the previous 2 cam. I ended up not buying it because I have enough camera for my needs and i am not that rich to have each and every camera I like sadly.

Worse HDR? You get to shoot in Log, and you can make any HDR out of it. (An oversimplification, but you get the point.) Camera sensors are judged by their dynamic range, not their ability to shoot HDR. It really depends on how you shoot and how you grade it. For its price, there’s no other camera that matches that image quality and color performance in action or rugged scenarios. It has never overheated on me, even in 36/38°C conditions. Once, in around 45°C+ outdoors, the display blacked out, but the camera kept recording. What I’m saying is that the Action 5 is slightly better, but if you’re on a tighter budget, the Action 4 is still a solid choice. Both are far superior to GoPros in my experience, especially in terms of mounting options, battery life, and the ability to connect to DJI mics.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. I use a combination of X4, GoPro Hero 12, and DJI Osmo 4. As everyone has noted 360 is better for all the lack of framing and set it up you have to do. I export always in 4K and publish 4K videos to YouTube. I'm pretty satisfied with the quality although when my buddy gives me X3 footage it's a noticeable drop in quality when you cut action camera footage next to the 360 footage that's been reframed and exported at 4K. That's mostly because the quality of that camera is lower and I'm up sampling which never really works well. If you're going X5 I think you'e failed unless you want to combo the footage with other high resolution footage it'll do the job. I also produce a lot of short form TikTok and Instagram content 360 so much easier for that and since the quality is 1080 it comes out stellar.

So firstly, I’m new to the action camera in general but lots of footage shot using iPhone in past and have a generally “Ok” knowledge of film and camera internals. BUT…I’m not a pro and think I need help. [D Log 4K60FPS no LUT AWB](https://reddit.com/link/1lhlql4/video/2l00ql7uxg8f1/player) After LOTS of research (literally months of review watching) I went for an action camera 4 because I couldn’t warrant the osomo 3 as my first “toe dip”. So I film vlogs and music vids and general life stuff as I’m a musician. I have started filming in D log (applying LUT after) and after lots and lots of searching for the “best settings” (serious minefield, I know) I film in 4k 60 fps (tried 120fps but generally I reduce to 60/30fps anyway) auto white balance and 16:9. (I think that’s everything. But the footage comes out super low quality footage around edges and general sharpness even with a pro light (nanlite - daylight) Did a recent shoot and had to use the Go Pro 12 black and it completely wiped the floor with the action camera 4. From what I’ve read, it must be something I’m missing? Any help is appreciated before I get rid of this cam and get a go pro.

I got it brand new. Watched many youtube video reviews, honest opinions, tutorials etc before buying. The camera sure has its strengths - fast charging, long autonomy, waterproof, it is light and easy to mount. It is good for SlowMo at bright sunny days, or for timelapse/hyperlapse videos. It records decent sound. I have a few big issues with it. 1. Extremely wide angle. If I go with Dewarp the corners are rediculously stratched. If I go with wide, no straight lines in shot. Using Narrow seriously degrades image quality, not to mention Digital Zoom... 2. I cannot get consistent image quality. Sometimes, in very rare occassions, I get a good footage. Not enough to use it for serious production, especially in lowlight situations. I tried voice announcing the settings in the beginning of the shots, to compare them later, but wasn't consistant and persistant enough. I watched a lot of "how to get the maximum out of your Action4" videos which didn't help. Comparing my footage to those on YT makes me suspicious that we do not have the same camera model at all. Like, preproduction ones were better than those we bought after brilliant reviews? Wouldn't be the first time, I remember the Kingston affair... I forgot to mention that I shoot and edit video professionaly, at work - for 10 years or more. My general impression is that 4k is usable only if you export in 1080. 1080 res is hardly usable as is, and that is another big disappointment. 1080 straight out of camera looks like the footage I had 5-6 years ago, on a cheap low-tier Android phone. Sorry for this, I thought some of you might be interested in my opinion. Also, if anyone has some experiences with Action4 that would like to share or discuss, I'd be glad to hear from you. What made your videos with Action4 better? Have you any hack or advice? Thanks for reading.

I think **Gopro Hero 8 is the best action camera** in 2024 (since 2019) but mine died and I can't replace it. I tried : \- Gopro 10 : very very very bad Gopro. Only good in full sunlight (same for 9 I guess). \- Gopro 12 : very bad underwater (my main use), but very detailed in full sunlight and Ok otherwise. Vegetation is strange with it... Distortion are bad, especially when you turn the camera. Stabilization and timewarp aren't reliable in low light. Gopro 8 is still my favorite, but in full sunlight, Gopro 12 can be interresting. And 8:7 is really useful. A good camera to watch your videos in VR with a lot of details. Not really interresting otherwise. \- Osmo Action 4 : a lot better than Gopro 12 underwater (less particles, more details on corals, better colors). Better in low light to catch the true colors and light, but not as detailed, even in low light to watch videos in VR. You have to set ISO manually all the time. \- Insta360 Ace Pro seems to be Ok. I don't really know (I only tried it indoors). It may be better than Osmo Action 4, but focal lenght is too short, so everything close to you is blurry... \>>>>>>> Gopro Hero 8 is the best to film your vacation at sea. It always give good colors and image. You never really have to configure it (except to film a color changing fish or cephalopods, but it doesn't happen very often...) It capture some important details even in low light, without making noise. It's good (not perfect but better than others) with vegetation (even tropical) in daylight. Timewarp works all the time (auto mode isn't perfect underwater but it doesn't really matter because you don't need it underwater). It's small and light. Hero 5 session isn't as good, but it's the lightest and smallest too (60gr), very useful. \----- Concerning VR camera, I only tried Samsung Gear 360. I'll try Insta X4 soon but it's not the same thing. I'll use it for VR, but it can't replace a standard action cam, because it would be blurry

Action 4 and 5 have a larger sensor than the GoPro, which 100% is the most important for underwater and low light environments. Your issue had to be user error.

I mean you can't really compare the two. The Sony will absolutley beat any action cam. However, the new DJI Action cam do have a bigger sensor vs the newest GoPro. Both of which are micro sized vs the APS-C sensor in the Sony. Action cams work better when you have video lights vs relying on natural lighting. They work great for caves when you can really lighten the whole place up.

My setup is a DJI 4, but I’d go with a 5 if purchasing new. I have it in a gimbal and carry it in my hand. I don’t record continuously, although my longest continuous record is probably 1 hour, but I’ve carried it on 10+ hour runs. I use the single press to start/stop record. I carry extra batteries and microSDs. The chest strap may work but you may see some jolting in your footage, even with stabilization. Also, you will most likely pick up your arms / hands in your footage, which I find distracting. The hand held gimbal enables you to extend the camera forward enough to get a perfect POV shot without distraction, plus it is easier to point in the direction you are looking, or not in the case of technical trail where you are looking down and you want the camera forward or to the side. The more you record the more you’ll know what footage works best in your videos and then you won’t need to record continuously, unless you have a use case where it does. I record at 4k 24fps. Recording continuously for hours at 4k will take up a lot of space. You can check out some of my footage in the video I created for my running group. See the 2024 highlight video on this page - https://www.trailambitions.com/btrbc-season-highlight-videos. This is straight out of the camera with no color grading.

I think the Action 4 will serve you better... smaller, more reliable, it just "works" while the GoPro is larger, the older 10-11 had issues with software bugs and crashes etc. The quality of the Action 4 is actually excellent and its the smallest and lightest normal action camera still sold today (the new Go Ultra is a niche and when in the Action Pod is actually larger / heavier than the Action 4.)

Either GoPro or DJI are great options, not so sure on Insta360. I currently have an Osmo Action 4 Adventure package and I'm really satisfied with how it performs. I chose the DJI because of its battery life and how resistant it is to overheating, I tested recording in 4k/30 (or 4k/60 i don't remember) and sure enough it recorded for a bit over 2 hrs until its battery died. When it comes to the quality of footage both are great but i do think GoPro has the slight advantage.

I have the Osmo Action 4 and I recommend it for its resistance to overheating and long battery life. If you have extra money get the Adventure pack for the extra batteries and battery case. In my experience you can record for up to 2 hrs straight without it overheating and it blows my mind how fast it charges. But if you're focused on content creation the Insta360 might be better since you can reframe it either way, I'm personally just not a fan of how 360 distorts things. If we're talking about video quality they're all pretty much the same.

(80% fast charge in 18 minutes. My GoPro will fast charge in about an hour, full charge advertised at 2-3 hours 😭) This subreddit actually makes fun of the charging issue officially, on the page look at the top, it will list the number of Reddit users on the subreddit as like.. .. “28 users are charging their batteries”

I am going to assume you dont have an action camera now and give advice based on that.... What I would do.... Buy a cheap action camera ace pro/hero 10/osmo 4 etc.... Get used to using it and editing it, and see how many times you go "shit I wish I caught that" That will give you the decision on if you want a 360 cam If you do go down that route, either wait for the DJI OSMO 360 (after real reviews come out) OR Wait for the X6, the X5 is good but its not a massive jump like the next iteration will be. The one great feature the x5 has is that it outputs 2 video files 1x 360 image and 1x front facing file, so if you just need it to be an action cam, it does that too. I had my gopro 12 on my helmet and my x4 on my handlebars and as I was riding a car on the other side of the road hit another car and hit someone on the pavement, I swung my head round but missed most of it with my helmet cam, but the x4 caught all of it and that was used in an insurance claim. So for me, not having to make sure I am pointing the right way will always be the benefit.

Yeah I use both. My Action 4 is my go to when there’s sand involved, questionable weather and expected handoffs on the horizon with family/friends. My OP3 is often used just by myself for inside and outside shots. Some can be pretty random instead of directed. The quick power up is more useful than I thought it would be.

The Action 5 Pro sensor size is the same as the Action 4. I have two Action 4 and decided to skip the 5 Pro, which is amazing according to many people, but I’ll wait until they really release a bigger sensor, possibly the Action 6 (?). Although the whole tariff situation will hit them hard because the US is their most lucrative market.

It depends on what kind of vlog you are planning to shoot. Pocket 3 is a great camera. Great video quality, low light and gimbal for smooth footage when moving. But it is a bit fragile and not suitable for action. I'm starting to feel that an Action camera would suit most people who are planning to shoot vlog. It's easy to use and the low light quality of the newer action camera (Action 5 and Ace Pro 2) are quite impressive despite the smaller sensor. You don't need to worry about weather proofing or occassional dropping of the camera. So think of what you plan to shoot. If you are mostly shooting non action and no waterproofing is not an issue for you, then go for Pocket 3 for better video quality. But if you want ease of use, weather resistance and drop, then go for an action camera. BTW: Action 4 is at a very sweet price lately. It's not the latest camera but the quality is pretty decent. You may want to check it out too.

dji had the audacity to say the usb door was intended to open without the need to press the latch, and somehow responsive to user feedback led them to keep the design that produces the cone/trump shape lens flare that was already inherent on the osmo action 4.

I choose the dji action 4 (5 wasn't out yet) for the sole reason you can charge and record at the same time. GoPro you have to open the battery door. this is helpful because I carry backup battery with me for emergencies and a long cable that can reach from my backpack to my chest so I can ride and record uninterrupted without needing to switch batteries. it also allows me to record myself on a tripod charging while learning how to jump and etc. but for to pro, you have to take off the protective cover, open the battery door and charge it. at that point you can't mount it or the battery might fly out. oh and GoPro overheats for longer recordings. not sure if they fixed it on the newer recordings. my experience was with go pro hero 10.

Went with dji action 4 because I could charge while recording (no need to stop and change battery), can use it as a webcam, and if you have a Garmin watch you can connect and display stats on the screen. And lastly, you don't need to take out the camera from the case to charge. These were the features I found dji stood out more than gopro a year ago. Could be different now but the charging while recording is a must have for me

As always it depends on your content. For example Im doing automotive. OP3 is perfect for many things like social media reels, low angle shots without an asistant (driver) or wide shots in daylight. But really struggles in low light and tighter shots. You can love it all you want but its still a small sensor without proper lenses. So thats where my main camera comes in either handheld or on gimbal / tripod. For more sophisticated horizontal videos is my main camera better also because of prores 4:2:2 14bit (through vlog). And then there is the action 4 for “risky” and unusual angles like front bumper a.k.a. videogame pov, my pov for bts etc. Having OP3 as main camera for vloging or some full hd reels? Ok but there are limitations for certain things you should be aware of. Its a budget option for more expensive rigs which can do a lot for the price. But not all of it.

GoPro 12 with casing or osmo 4 with casing both take good enough video and ok stills. For half decent stills TG7 with housing is a decent investment - decent strobes for the next spend, the lenses. After that it depends on your income. However, if your wallet isn't bottomless I'd suggest spending what you have on necessary gear first - decent stuff that will last rather than entry level semi disposable. And then spend on gaining experience - next level trading and lots of dives. Then in toys.

I've owned them all. GoPro's, Insta360, and now DJI. They each have their strengths, and some have some major weaknesses. At the moment, I feel like DJI is the most professional. The Osmo Action 4 and 5 are amazing, particularly when paired with the DJI Mic Mini. Having said all of that, unless you have some very specific reason to record the ride, skip all of them. Out of the hundreds of hours of recordings I've done through the years, I've barely gone back and rewatched 15 minutes of it. Enjoying the ride is more important than worrying about "are my batteries charged?", "did I hit the record button", "is it \*still\* recording or has it overheated", etc. etc. Not to mention the hours of editing afterwards. By all means, stop and bring out your phone for some quick clips and to record some highlights of the trip, but don't be overly concerned about the technology.

I had the same quandry. The go3s would destroy the market if they added external mic support. So I just use an Osmo action 4. No where near as discrete and it's a bit of a pain to have hanging off your body, but it's the only decent option.

Go pro is probably not the first choice anymore. DJI Osmo action 4 and 5 are better imo. Insta 360 also have the ace series which are not 360 cameras despite the name. 360 cameras like the insta 360 X3 and X4 can shoot normal video too. All the do is record 2 feeds and mege then, front back back cameras with super wide angle lenses. I have an Osmo action 3 and 4 and an insta 360 X3. If you aren't interested in 360 video, the action 4 or 5 is a great choice. Much more rugged than the insta 360 and more shooting options in regard to frame rate and resolution. Another thing to consider is audio. If you want speaking in the videos, you'll need external mics. The Osmo action 4 and 5 can connect a DJI mic2 via Bluetooth. The insta 360 don't natively support external mics, but I've heard of a hack connecting the mic as a Bluetooth earphone in the menu and it working, but I haven't tried it.

I just got this camera and it's horrible period. Always never in full focus, it won't even focus on your bike name, dashboard or a person's face. Only far subjects and broad day bright light it wants. Anyone saying this setting and that setting just helping to prevent dji from fixing this obvious defect. Try focus on the box it came it, it can't. People hide its big flaw by giving the bad a good label. Oh its an action camera, so action camera are supposed to be blurry. Why can't you just pull put out the camera when you out and about and record, whether you are in the busy street or enter a mall. No, you must waste time changing settings. That's completely unacceptable. I bet my second hand Samsung S9 is far better than Dji action 4. The reviews all lied, not really pointing out this major flaw, which was in action 3 as well. Next time I won't easily believe these videos that pop up first search. They tend to lie or ignore to mention the cons or flaws. Any camera that can't focus is trash, period.

Wait for the DJI action 6 that should arrive soon, and then wait a bit more until actual feedback (not first day sponsored 'reviews') allows you to make an informed choice about it. If you don't want to wait, get a discounted DJI action 4 or try insta360 ace pro 2. The DJI 5 pro has horrendous color and highlight clipping when not shooting D Log. The gopros are notoriously bad reliability, overheat when shutting down in some sort of endless loop and the image quality is garbage. My GoPro let me down every single time I tried to film in cold weather. Every. Single. Time. It would lock up or it would shutdown. This happened on multiple outings, different batteries, different memory cards, and so on. I was in the Rockies doing a video and also had a DJI Action 1 that a friend had let me borrow. The GoPro died about 45 minutes into the trip - would not stay running in the cold. The DJI Action 1 ran the whole trip, no issues, always powered up, always worked. I gave up on GoPro at that point and went all DJI (Action 4 and a Pocket 3).

Despite loving DJI products, I've been disappointed by the last few camera launches. Action5 has some positives - inbuilt memory, night mode - but overall it's less pleasing to me than the Action4, which has nicer image to my eyes. And with the Nano, it's clearly better tech than the Action2 - bigger sensor, bluetooth mics, low light mode - but I still prefer the form factor of the Action2. Stick the Action2 in a proper metal case and the overheating is less of a problem too I discovered. Overall, though, I just don't understand the logic of making these "wearable" cameras bigger and heavier with each generation. Right now, I still see Insta360 Go3 as the sweet spot, especially given it has square sensor for "freeframe" mode. For POV videos that gives you enormous versatility in the edit. Which is more valuable to me than the landscape(ish) sensors in Go3S, Go Ultra and DJI Nano. I'm now waiting to see what DJI comes up with when Action6 is released. Hopefully they can keep the same dimensions and mount as Actions 3/4/5 despite the rumoured bump to 1-inch sensor. I don't want to shell out for a whole new set of accessories.

DJI Action 4 has been solid for me and bonus, the operating time on a battery has been a lot longer than the GoPros. If you are concerned about the colors, you could try shooting in D-Log and then do your own color grading. I just shoot in auto mode as the color looks fine to me.

I have the Pocket 3 and the Action 4 (which, if you can find a used Action 4 I say go for that. In many ways its actually superior image quality to the 5 Pro). They have different use cases for me. I use the pocket 3 for more professional usage for my YouTube channel (b roll) and sometimes take it out to film my kids. But I love having the action 4 to hand over to the kids and let them run around and film their own adventures. Plus normal action cam stuff, taking it to the beach and other areas where I can't take the Pocket 3. The Pocket 3 is great, but there's no way it's worth $1,000. You could pick up a legit camera/lens combo and gimbal for that price. Obviously a much larger package, but still....

I film and make hiking videos and have a ton of cameras. I do not like iPhone footage. Looks too sharpened and saturated to me. I used a GoPro for years. My current one is a GoPro Hero 11 Black and I absolutely love it. The 9 & 10 were buggy. The 8 was solid but the 11 is so much better. The 12 and 13 don’t have enough upgrades to justify. For better footage, set the field of view to linear. Gets rid of the fisheye look. Set sharpness and saturation each to -2. Set color profile to natural. Get smooth, steady shots and don’t swing it around like crazy. It’s a great starting point. Once you get the settings dialed in, you just need to press record for 99% of shots. So it’s easy to use. It’s durable and waterproof and small also. I don’t mount it to anything (unless I’m climbing or rappelling). I got a cheap tripod/extension handle off Amazon and just carry it. You won’t want all your footage to just be a straight ahead shot anyway. I just bought an action 4 but the verdict’s still out on that. If I were to recommend one camera it would be the DJI osmo pocket 3. I absolutely love it. But it’s pricey and if you’re starting out the GoPro will do good enough.

I do have an action 4 pro and it has been my every day carry camera before getting a new phone. But I do still like to use it for myking my vlogs as I can film myself more easily than with my mirrorless (also, waterproof) About the osmo nano, I am considering to grab one down the line as I feel like the ability to just clip it to a magnet on your chest is wayy better than using a chest or helmet rig, so better for everyday filming. But yea, battery and storage is a concern

Thank you very much mate! I'll think better of it then! I know the drawbacks and I would go for the DJI Action 4 (€229) I think it has better quality than the Action 5... I understand your frustration, but I already have my main camera with 3 lenses... each lens costs about 1000 euros... and I can only put one at a time to record. That's why I was thinking about buying an action camera to complement it and use it in moments with good light. (I mentioned blogging, but I also go road biking, hiking and this kind of thing) Thank you :)

It maybe depends on where these videos are going to end up, and what conditions you’re filming under. I’ve only used the Action 4, but I did a ton of YouTube “research” - finding someone doing back to back/side by side comparisons of the ones you’re interested in - and in similar conditions. For me, that was Ali Clarkson - he was riding similar stuff to what I ride, often dark, riding in the woods. If you are filming for, say, Instagram and YouTube, consider the available aspect ratios. The 360s can often crop the same raw footage for either landscape or portrait, which can be handy. Having said that, if the resolution is high enough, you can crop reasonable landscape from portrait, and vice versa, but it might not work for high quality YouTube clips, if that’s going to be your bag.

I had a Pocket 2, it was fine. I think the Pockets make better vlogging cameras, but they are much less robust than action cams and lack durability features like waterproofing. So your intended use will be a big factor in deciding what's best. I think one of the best bang-for-buck cameras used right now is probably the DJI Action 4. The 5 has some new features, but the 4 is pretty highly regarded. The benefits of an action cam over something like the Pocket series, is that the batteries are replaceable and it's easy to find generic replacements for cheap.

When i was looking last year, i initially wanted the insta ace pro but ultimately chose the dji osmo action 4 because the specs are better. The insta uses ai for editing which is neat, but the dji actually captured more because of its specs. I film in dlog (captures most data) and use the lightcut app to make quick edits and it's super easy (one click to adjust for underwater correction). The dji osmo action 5 is now out with an even better sensor, but you can still get the 4 for cheaper and it's a really good camera. You should also get the underwater housing for extra security (i first tried the cheap third party ones but it leaked, so unfortunately had to get the more expensive dji brand one). It does well without a light, but eventually you'll want a video light, too.

So I have the DJI 4 and DiveVolk - I will say the DJI is a much easier system to just point and record/take pictures. I have a 16 Pro and while it can take amazing high res photos and videos, it definitely takes some prep and setup ahead of time. Also I’ve found the auto White Balance/Color Balance is much better on the DJI in what it will do right out of the box. My iPhone is amazing, but you definitely want to take time to learn how to white balance properly and also about post-editing of images and video.

The Action 4 or 5 will give you the best video quality and battery life, period. They've got the best charge pack available in the Action 5 combo kit for batteries, as well as the best battery life. Overheating is a non-issue in the first place with them, basically the same as GoPro and Insta360, and doubly a non-issue because you'll be running air over the chassis the whole time. Its 4K footage is the cleanest in all light intensities, from night to midday, and it's got the most dynamic range for post, as well as the filedizes being manageable and the best slow-mo modes. It uses the same sensor as the Insta360 Ace Pro/Pro 2, but does the same trick as the A7SIII where it uses its excess megapixels to create a bayer within a bayer pattern, which culls noise like nothing else. Not downsampling, another odd thing If, however, you have a bias, get an Insta360 Ace Pro 2. Pretty fantastic in all regards, not my preferred, I think 8K is wasted in Action Cameras, and it chews battery life because of that. However, it's AI exposure is spot on, night modes are good but noisy (GoPro's ability to shoot at night are non-existent), and downsampling your 8K in post always produces a lovely image. Get a chin mount.

It seems to suffer from the same issues my old Action 2 had. There are two units. One with the camera and its dock unit with the SD card. You record with the camera unit and you have to transfer it to the dock unit with SD card later. It's annoying and if you are filming a lot of footage it can become a problem. I used it for fishing and I was restricted with having to copy files over all the time as it filled up quickly on the camera unit with 4k video. The other issue is the battery. It is a rechargeable battery again, not a battery you pop in and out and can hold spares so when it is exhausted that's all you can film it for. These were my two main issues I had with my Action 2 and it's the same with this new model. If you are shooting short videos here and there it is ok but longer videos and hours of footage makes it difficult. I bought an Action 4 and it is so much better, being able to replace the batteries and records straight to the SD card. These nano cameras are basically for light use, maybe for bloggers or short activities but not long day activities where the battery would run out...

Under 100$ on Amazon during sales. Alot of people use it as a b cam/2nd camera. However, it really doesn't hold a candle to the last two gens of big name action cams. I just ordered a dji action cam 4 on sale for 200$ (300au). Gopro footage looks a bit better but I keep reading about overheating issues and glitches that gopro have done jack squat about over the last two gens. The dji cams seem to have better batteries, better low light and overall reliability. I'll take that over some extra pixels.

It's because they have been releasing the exact same thing for years now and they keep increasing the price for no reason at all. It also has issues they never adress with the newer ones and the GoPro's abilities has been surprassed by DJI. Even the Osmo Action 3 is better than most GoPro cameras and the Osmo Action 4 surpassed all of them with every feature (they don't overheat as easily, they can record at night when it's completely dark, ect.)

If you need long videos in high quality go for DJI. If you need features like GoPro labs go with GoPro. GoPro has better "log profile" but DJI has better optics. I did like the color better underwater vs the gopro which is why I went with the osmo. Now since the action 5 is out you could probably find a used action 3 (maybe even a 4) in your budget.

Im personally a dji guy, i have an action 4 and my dad has a 5 pro. I dont know much about GoPro:( I’ve had a hero 9. I bought it for 200 in 2023. In begin 2025 I bought an action 4 for 230. Yeah, i sadly dont use it anymore. I tried all action cameras before i settled on the gopro. I then returned each one. I had a bad landing with an action 4(by bad, i mean flipped over at 1mph) and it cracked in 4 spots. I returned it because i cant be breaking a cam that easily. I tried an insta ace pro. It was alright but i liked the quality of the hero 11 more and it was cheaper. Then I got a gopro and smacked a tree doing maybe 20mph. The gopro had no scratches and no chips. Settled my debate right then and there.

Try the action 4. I had the go pro 12 and returned it and now have the action 4. I love it so much more in every way. To me, go pro UI is wonky, touch screen sucks, too many options that aren’t practical to use. A lot of ppl think the Action 4 looks naturally better outside of the 5 doing better in lower light scenarios, but the 4 is also designed for low light, just not as good as the 5.

Beware if you're an android user, the Action 4 will not let you use the camera unless you download it's app to activate it first. However, their app isn't supported by Google Play, so you have to go directly to their website. For me, this was enough of a red flag that I returned the action 4 and a got a gopro instead.

I used GoPros for many years - I think I had two or maybe three models - never on the bleeding edge of any really. My last one was acting up - sometimes I'd have to pull the battery out and back in to get it to turn on, random lock ups and missed videos - so I went with the DJI Osmo Action 4. I really like it. I don't get really fancy with all the different modes but I use it for MTB videos (from a chest mount) and it works great. One of the features that really sold it was the removable mount. Getting the angle right on a chest mount is tricky so once you find the right angle, you don't want to lose it. With GoPros, you have to unscrew the camera from the mount to access the battery and memory card. With the DJI mount, you simply unclip the mount from the camera. The mount stays on the chest strap (or whatever it's attached to) when the cam is detached. So much easier.

The 5 had minimal updates/improvements over the 4. The improvements were good but nothing worth upgrading 4 to 5. I suspect that will be the same for 5 to 6. In other words if you buy the 5 today and the 6 comes out next month there’s a good chance you won’t regret the purchase. Unless you’re a pro the bump in specs won’t be noticeable to the average person. If you can wait go for it and wait for the 6. But we’ve all been in your shoes when money is burning your pocket and you’re itching to get that new toy. Again you won’t regret getting the 5.

As someone who owns the OG action, Action 2 and Action 4 I would say it depends on what your budget is or what you need it for. If budget is not an issue the the 5 would probably be what i would choose. If low light is what you need definitely from what I have seen I would get the 5. If you are not worried about lowlight then the 4 would definitely be good enough and at current price is a steal. I am going back and forth about the 5 but probably will wait for the 6 and hopefully it will have a 1 inch sensor.

I have an ancient GoPro Hero 7, which I never took underwater. When I wanted a point-and-shoot for scuba (taking underwater selfies, group photos and videos) my choices were the GoPro Hero 13 and the DJI Action 4. Watched a bunch of Youtube videos comparing the two, then went for a DJI Action 4, about a week before the DJI Action 5 Pro became available. Some of the strengths of the Action 4 over the GoPro Hero 13:- * Bigger sensor - much better low light performance * Better underwater auto white balance Things I have noticed about my Action 4:- * There is no need for a red filter. The AWB feature works rather well. No filter means more light reaches the sensor. I am very happy with the IQ. * Excellent battery life. I would charge the battery to full overnight, put camera into underwater casing, and the battery could easily last me 3 dives. No need to take camera out until the dives are finished. * Excellent BT/wifi connectivity so I download all my photos and videos to my mobile phone between dives. With camera in underwater casing. The battery life of the Action 5 Pro is supposed to be 2X better (but apparently at reduced video bitrate). Due to their fixed-focus lenses, these action cameras are pretty useless for macro photography. Backscatter makes a Flip filter kit with a macro close-up lens for the GoPro HERO, but that's not available on the DJI Actions. Mind you, I don't know how a user could trigger underwater flashes with an action camera, so *maybe* that macro filter is of little use. I don't know. I don't regret not waiting a bit longer to get the Action 5 Pro at all, for my Action 4 is perfectly adequate for my use. In summary: I am very happy with my Action 4.

I have a DJI Action 4, normally in the dive case. File transfer is simply a matter of starting the DJI phone app, connect it to the camera's wifi and batch select any photos and videos not already transferred. The dive case does interfere with file transfer a little but the speed is good. Both the DJI Action 4 and 5 have a colour sensor, so the colour comes out very decent (except when it doesn't, sometimes interpreting green as blue) and I never bothered doing any colour correction. They both take 10-bit colour video clips, so colour grading would be quite possible. Mine works perfectly for selfies and group shorts, but is pretty useless for macro (action cams lack focusing). I also agree that a camera is a burden for new divers. I had one when I was at ˜50 dives. Didn't have the skill to use it, and decided to concentrate on the diving. I didn't get my DJI Action 4 until I was close to 200 dives.

You won't get 20h recordings at 4K30 with a 512 card. Maybe 10-15h. Note, it will split the footage up into 25gb chunks. The battery will last about 2 hours, but if you want to go all day you will need a powerbank - maybe a cable to one in a backpack? Yes, you can take a battery out and it keeps recording, but only if its plugged into USB power at the same time. If mounting on a helmet you will need a mic (like dji mic mini), otherwise the wind noise will be bad. The rocksteady stabilisation is one of the best, and vibrations wont be a problem in daylight. The camera is made for this, and wont be damaged (unless you fall and smash it hard). The best footage is shot at high framerates, with manual exposures in DLOG-M, colour graded, and edited. Note: The action 4 quality is just as good (and a lot of people think its better). Action 5 just has a longer battery life, better low light, and brighter screens really. Hope that helps a little!

Once the custom scenarios are configured, I can turn on the camera, turn on the mic mini, and in less than 5 seconds, everything is connected and I am recording. Then, in editing, it is just splicing clips and exporting. The OA4 has given me trouble with the Mic connections. Sometimes the connection drops, and I have to reboot both devices, and sometimes even resync them in order to get things working again. It also takes about 10 seconds for the OA4 to recognize the Mic pairing. The camera itself is still quite good, but it usually stays on the bench, ready to jump into the game if needed, but is never called.

I would avoid GoPro Hero 10 or beyond. Those are the only Hero cameras I have experience with and they're a huge PITA especially for motorcycling. It either doesn't turn on, doesn't record, or records with no audio ALL THE TIME. If you happen to notice it's not turning on, then you get to pull over, take your helmet off, unmount the camera, and fiddle with it until you figure out what's not working. Usually requiring you to remove and reinsert the battery. It's the most frustrating thing ever on a bike and I'd argue dangerous since you're preoccupied with the camera instead of your ride. I tried working with a Hero 10 and 11 for over 2 years before I swore them off forever. I recently switched to Insta360 and couldn't be happier. The Insta has literally not one time malfunctioned or not recorded when I pressed the button. I also have an old DJI Osmo Action that never had reliability issues. I would say any Osmo Action gen or the previous gen Insta360 (R One or something like that I cant' remember the name) would do the job well. If part of its job is dashcam you might also consider a 360 camera. You'll have way butter luck catching incidents with it than a regular action cam. I also have a GoPro 360 MAX camera. Unlike the Hero cameras, it's been great. It's still glitchy at times but nowhere near the regularity of the Hero cameras. It's kind long in the tooth now too so you may be able to find them on a good deal somewhere.

Whatever you do avoid GoPro Hero cameras. They are and have been riddled with reliability issues for years and it doesn't appear they care to fix it. The MAX 360 for whatever reason doesn't seem to be affected and has been a good camera for me but, I will never give GoPro another dime of my money because of their arguably criminal neglect of Hero cameras. I've been running an Insta360 Ace Pro for about 6 months now. It's never once crapped out on me. Turns on and starts filming every time I press the button which is much more than I can say for Hero cameras. It's never overheated (it gets pretty hot and humid in the summer where I live) and has comparable battery life to the GoPro Heroes I've used with the Enduro battery. That's not to say Insta360 is perfect by any means. They've had internal moisture issues with the new Ace Pro 2. I've also heard great things about the DJI Osmo Action cameras. I still have an original Osmo Action and it worked great. I haven't used it in a long time though and I have no fist hand experience with the newer models. I would love to test how the DJI wireless mic integration works on the new models though and have been considering picking one up for that alone. Another thing to consider is a 360 camera. They provide the most flexibility by far. You can make "360" style videos or you can crop in the POV so that it looks like a normal action camera. If you're on a budget and can only have one camera I'd probably go the 360 route.

We use GoPros at work for in car spiels, and we have found the latest ones annoyingly buggy. Sometimes (not often) shutting down randomly and sometimes not saving a video and throwing up an error. It also tends to overheat when mounted on the windshield since we live in a hot country (happens often). Image quality is great, to be fair, but we shifted to osmo actions because of the more reliable software, more reliable heat dissipation and longer battery life. Transfer by files is also easier on the DJI with a better iPhone app. Overall, go pro has really good video quality, but the few times it failed, they were mission critical shots, and we just can’t afford to have that gap in our workflow.

The 360 cam is especially nice if you want to hit record and go, and spend a little more time in the editing to make the shots. Gopro or osmo action are just simple quick video devices. I’m a gear head, I own a ton of camera equipment. You don’t need the latest to document you trips. I’m still using an older GoPro hero 9 and it takes fantastic 4k 60FPS video. Look into the older generations. The processing power jumped between the 9 and 10th generation GoPro. Recommendation **If you can find a GoPro hero 10 that would be the best value.** The hero12 didn’t have gps, so I’d avoid that generation if that feature is important to you. *Go pro alternatives:* I own a insta360 go3s. It’s great for POV, ultra small. I clip it to my hat. Max resolution is 4k 30FPS. If you’re going to do fast paced activities like racing you may find the framerate at the max resolution to be too slow. Insta360 X5 is a 360 camera. Theres a learning curve to the software. But provides the ability to reframe footage. Quality of the video will not be as good as a standard action camera. DJI osmo action, it’s a solid choice as well. Bit rate is lower then a GoPro, but if you’re not a professional you won’t know the difference

I've been a GoPro user ever since. It's a great choice for action-packed activities—built like a tank and made for hardcore conditions. However, my main issue with the GoPro, especially the Hero 12, is the overheating. It tends to get very hot, particularly in warm climates. For these conditions, the Osmo is a great alternative for me.

For me, nothing beats an action camera that’s tough and small enough to take everywhere. GoPros are the obvious choice, but I’ve also liked the DJI Osmo Action for travel; durable, great stabilization, and handles adventure stuff well. Really depends if you want something mountable or just handheld :)

I filmed a live concert two days ago, using an Osmo 360, three GoPro's (Osmo Actions kind of suck), three Sony A7S III's, a Sony A7C II, two Sony A6700's, a Sony A7 III, a Sony A7S II, and two Sony A7S I's. All of these cameras were filming for almost two hours, and not a single one overheated (the A6700's did require external fans).

GoPro facing back on the helmet is not a good idea lol. Good luck getting the right angles and everything, it would be cool if it worked though. The Osmo action line is good also, mine was good, I’ve read that they perform better in the cold than the GoPros, which was the main reason I bought mine. (Don’t have one anymore because I barely used it)

As of Feb 22, 2025, Insta360 Ace Pro, Ace Pro 2, GoPro 12 and DJI Osmo Action are the three best action cams for motorcycle riding. If you do low light riding (night or overcast weather), go with Ace Pros. It has much better dynamic range and much higher image quality in low light. You'll find many comparison reviews in YouTube, I'd advise checking out a few of them for yourself. I own an Ace Pro and I never looked back.

People are switching to DJI, GoPros tend to overheat. Basically want editing on phone and ai stuff use insta360, it's the heaviest one. Want GPS(this is nice but some models don't have it) and the original, uso GoPro. Want the arguably best night shots(insta360 is also good here) and a lighter camera get DJI. If you're going to add audio the DJI one has a sync directly with their mics and GoPro will ask you to add a mod or an adapter. Insra360 has Bluetooth connection also but needs a USB to jack adapter for the mic if you want better audio. Edit: I use an older insta360 camera, an one r 1inch, that's heavier than a current DJI but has awesome night imagine due to the bigger sensor, for audio I capture it separately using s dedicated mic and sync in post.

Depends on your use case, for me I won't be going into the GoPro brand, because they have a reputation for the camera shutting down and not working properly. They are very similar there is no clear winner, for me DJI makes more sense due to the running performance, low light and weight. But I would love to have the timestamp and gps features of the GoPro, the thing for me is that the GoPro is very well documented in overheating and that's a deal breaker for me.

I just started using a DJI osmo. I had to stop using 4K because the files get to big and I’m impatient with the download. I’m going to switch to their GoPro knock off as it has a tracking feature that might work better. Rink rules I have to have it on the outside of the glass but it still works pretty good with a suction cup mount. [short example clip](https://youtu.be/LHWH1ZG1rYo?si=9zumLKeA78e0K6s6)

The only negatives that I have about the DJI so far, is that the video files don't seem to interact well with Premiere Pro (not sure about other video editors). There are work arounds, but GoPro footage works way more smoothly with Premiere Pro. The materials of the camera feel "cheaper" than GoPros. Not sure if that's just in my head, but I reckon a GoPro Hero would handle more action than a DJI Osmo Action. The raw footage you get from the DJI, however, is far better than that of a GoPro, especially underwater (and you suck at colour grading) and in darker environments. I've been using the DJI without a protective housing. I opted for the 2 year insurance option because of it, and I can get a replacement camera or lens relatively cheap if anything happens while diving. Unsure how smoothly the process for replacement is, as of yet, but I'd assume it's good.

I think the guy standing still in the front row of a punk consert is gonna stand out lol. All jokes aside, maybe the osmo pocket3's camera performance would be really good, but i think you would benefit from something a bit more rugged like an actual action cam. Just in case. You drop it. Look into something that has replacement lenses like a gopro (though i wouldn't go back to gopro myself) or dji osmo action for example. Or maybe even a sturdy point-and shoot. Look at which one has the best low light performance for concerts. Generally acton cams don't have huge sensors, which means you'll have worse quality in low light.

I had 2 DJI osmosis Actions (little cube things) and they would record about 5 min and shut off from overheating. My hero 10 will record for hours connected to constant power and never bat a lense in heat lol

If you're looking for something affordable buy used. Action cams are designed to be durable so the risk of a used one breaking are fairly minimal. Most people use GoPro cameras but I for one would take the DJI Osmo action over it.

well yes. you are a bot that replies to people immediately who speak slightly ill of DJI? lol not as dumb as how DJI benchmark their camera. claim up to 200 minutes lol but that is in 1080p quality and you need to save some of the battery for the vision dock so it is probably 170 minutes at most. also learned that you can't even preview footage when your camera is disconnected from the visiondock. so much for the "pov" camera thing. currently trying to find out the battery life on the DJI osmo action 5 pro now because guess what - their battery life benchmark on that is also horrible. it is 1080p quality with no WiFi and both screens off. how the hell am i supposed to see what i am recording? lmao. what a company. keeps getting worse and worse the more i educate myself on these cameras

I have a dji osmo and a dji gimbal for my much better camera phone. Only one gets used. Setting up the camera phone and gimbal and how huge and conspicuous it is makes it a no go. The osmo is tiny, easy to put in a pocket and best of all, discreet

I have both. The main difference is the osmo pocket camera is more fragile. The Action has good stabilization too, but the pocket is better. I will never take the pocket out in the rain, while doing something fast-moving like mountain biking, it’s not waterproof so I don’t take it swimming or on small boats, I would never hand it to a child. The Action can take smooth footage, but it’s easier with the pocket to get, for example, a smooth moving video of the Airbnb you’re staying at. You can also do a few neat things with the tracking since the camera can actually physically rotate. Honestly for most people I think the action is a slightly better choice, but the pocket is a great camera too.

it won't break.... but it will 100-0% it's battery in like 5 minutes of cold filming, randomly shut off, occasionally corrupt videos, and just in general let you down, go in a bag fully charged and come out a while later dead... not quite enough that you throw it in the garbage of course. Just enough to constantly piss you off. When it works it's pretty good I guess or whatever...... but the osmo works every time.

If you want a dash-cam, then get a dash-cam. Action cams are fantastic for action shooting, but they make shitty dash-cams. Dash-cams aren't good for action shooting, but they are the perfect thing to use as a dash-cam. I own a DJI action cam (I use it when I'm shooting to help self-coach my mount and head position), and I have a GoPro as well. I also have front and rear dash-cams on three bikes and my truck. I had a helmet-mounted camera many years ago. It was great in some ways, but it was annoying as hell because it always needed charging, it had to be wiped after every ride, and it had to be turned on. The dash-cams turn on when the ignition turns on, they auto-rewrite (write over the oldest footage), and they just always work. The best thing they do is remove the human element from the equation.

Insta360 or DJI action cam. The current crop of go pro cameras need to have the heavy duty (white) batteries and often will shut off due to the battery vibrating and the camera thinking it is overheating. My favorite for all around view is insta360 rs one with 360 module. It's discontinued, but great quality and size. The DJI action is great and usually on sale. For 4k the insta360 rs pro. PS, you don't need to respond to this comment and tell me your go pro works fine. I own 3-12 blacks, 6-11 blacks, a few 10s and I'm almost rid of all my 9s finally. I do video coaching and use them extensively, all run dev firmware.... I own 4 of the rs ones, 2 rs pros, 3-action 4s, an action 5 and 2 aim smartycam 3 units.

I was a GoPro fan for years but upgraded to the 12 and have had issues with water getting in. First through the battery door and now getting condensation behind the lens cover. For the battery door issue was able to get replaced under warranty after pleading with customer service. Did not have same luck with lens cover issue. IMO GoPro has gone downhill. They used to be the gold standard but no longer. I got a DJI Action cam and it has been amazing. Also have DJI drones and am very happy with their products.
