r/djiDJI Osmo Action 6 vs Osmo Nano. Which one’s better?

If you are a videographer you of course know that you can totally get away with using actioncams for BTS. Done that a lot of times for online and TV productions, and is is pretty common to do that. Not of all of us are Ridley Scott. Personally I reall like the nano for its form factor. you can mount it pretty much anywhere and is is quite unobstrusive. Which is a big plus for behind the scene footage. You have to keep in mind that the runtime of the nano owthout the vision dojc is significantly shorter and it does have to get recharged on the dock pretty much every hour or so if you dont want to risk it shutting down in wrong moment. Also it does get pretty warm over time if you set it to record in the max bitrate. Real life performances of the nano: 1.5 hours, body mounted, indoors, low light mode (blacklighted room), no problems at all 1 hour, 240fps / 1080p, body mounted outdoors, no problem In terms of quality I can only compare it to my action 5 pro, and they are both on par under all conditions. And that is still pretty much comparable with the Action 6. The 6 has of course a better performance in low light which might be a key factor in BTS applications. In conclusion the nano is fine if you use it in a way and for a purpose that it is fit for. Like POV mount, fire and forget. For point and shoot I'd opt for the Action 5/6.

DJI Osmo Nano. * Pros: * Camera module is light because it doesn't have a back screen. Instead of relies on a separate screen/charging module that snaps into it when needed for power backup and for transferring footage or reviewing it. That means - for me - using the hat clip I barely feel it on my head. * 4k camera [has quite a nice image](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9EO01q9i_c) \+ various quality settings giving you the ability to get up higher FPS to do slow motion shows * I like the simple push button on, start recording, another push to stop recording, longer push to turn off. * 10m waterproof for the camera itself / only splash protection for the recharging module. * Recharging from the charging module is quite fast I found. Under 20 minutes from zero to full charge in my experience. * Is magnetic so you can pop the camera onto something metal like a pole for an easy repositioning * the snapping of the camera module onto either a mounting accessory (like the hat clip) or the charging module is pretty effortless and is solid. * Cons: * As mentioned, the screen/charging module is separate so you need to either use the Wifi to app or snap it to the second module to review footage * Camera module is internal storage only. In order to get footage off you need to transfer to the charging module and/or use the app to wirelessly transfer. The charging module itself allows for insertion of a card. So basically the limitation is how much you want the camera module itself to hold. * In my experience with periods of recording and idle, the camera itself seems to auto shut off after about 2 hours, whether that is because of overheating or some inactivity issue. Unsure yet. * Recharging module power is the other limiting factor. No swappable battery. I believe there are options for ongoing power though I haven't explored it. My previous experience is with heavier GoPros which had a weight issue. I did have a GoPro Session that was the right form factor and weight that I liked but with a limited camera and aspect ratio I did not like. And of course any 4k blows that old one out of the water.

I think your assessment is fair, even if people say "It's obviously an action camera not a vlog camera", the lines are blurring sure, but the shilling is too much. I like my Nano for daily captures, but only because I know that it's not exactly what I would call YouTube vlog quality, and I accept its weaknesses. Shills are making it hard to know about the weaknesses of these cameras.

For outdoor, I recommend Osmo Action. The Pocket 3 isn't as fragile as people make it out to be, I put it in my backpack without a case, but if it's raining or I'm doing sports there's always the fear that you're gonna break it. Action cams are rugged and the video quality is really good these days. I have the Nano and Pocket 3, and I use the Nano 99% of the time now even in low light. This isn't a dig on the OP3 but rather on YouTube reviewers: the obsession with "low light performance" only to end up with a scene that looks like daytime, that just doesn't make sense to me. I used to have an OA5, it has subject tracking, horizon correction, and stabilization. Look up "daren film" a small creator, his DJI Nano Cinematic Beast video shows the low light quality. Nano and OA5 have the same sensor.

I have been using the Nano for the past couple of days and is really happy. I've had Ace Pro since 2024 but wasn't too happy with the IQ and now I used it mostly on pool day with my son. What changes with nano is the fact that it's magnetic, comes with various useful accessories, and has a detachable remote control / monitor. I know it has issues with battery life and overheating. But if OP's use case is to use it for unique angles, then they likely never encounter those issues anyway. Just gotta remember to bring powerbank if it's going to be a day-long shoot

I just added nano and I can't be happier with the combo. Pocket 3 is the main cam and nano is the "weird angle" cam. Granted, you probably could find Action 5 Pro for around the same price as nano and the resulting image might be comparable or even slightly better. But the fact that it's small, magnetic, and have a detachable remote / monitor makes it indispensable.

I'm planning to get the osmo nano for that specific reason. I also have that pocket 3 but I don't want to damage it. I think for the most part, the nano works for me but definitely check reviews as people have pointed out some issues with it.

i absolutely agree and I even wanna say that that's how the nano is supposed to be used. It's versatile and convenient to use. It's light and discrete.

That’s one reason I am likely to pass on this. The DJI Osmo Nano is going to be 10 bit and with the same sensor as the Action 5. GoPro and DJI have been doing 10 bit for a while, why isn’t Insta360.

The Nano is a great option for someone like yourself that would know how to use its unique feature of being detachable and magnetic to get some cool angles for BTS footage.

r/djiosmoDJI Osmo Nano vs Osmo Action 5 Pro – POV Street Photography Testing (early impressions)

image quality is nearly the same, fov is a bit smaller compared to the action 5 pro (155°vs 143°), for battery life, with a powerbank. So far i had no issues with overheating on my action 5 pro. My osmo nano 64gb overheated once(only used it once for a longer time, around 20°C indoors in a church), after around 43 minutes and then also shutdown because the battery was empty(around 3% left)(with the 64gb version you can record about 60minutes without moving the videos to the external/sd storage). osmo nano with vision dock is a bit bigger than the action 5 pro, but when you remove the vision dock it is way smaller and you can also remote control the camera with the screen. if i would have to buy the osmo nano again i would definitely go for the 128gb version so that i can record for longer periods without moving the data(for example while the vision dock is connected)

I would go for the nano because you can attach it then use the dock as an external screen to monitor your framing, you can't do that with other action cams
