MTP is completely garbage and has always been complete garbage, it's also 21 years old now. Go Pro just doesn't give a single flying fuck about the comfort of their customers because back when they started they where the only ones offering that video quality, so customers to just sucked up the bullshit. But now there are like 6 more companies that offer that quality so customers don't have to take Go Pro their bullshit anymore. Want to hear even more bullshit? I got a Hero 11 black and if you connect that over a usb cable to your computer and keep the battery in during file transfer it will drain the FUCKING battery, and if it goes dead your file transfer will fail even though it perfectly works without a battery because ONLY then it decided to get power over usb. Plus if you keep the battery in, high chance it will overheat and you still have a failed transfer. You know why it overheats? Cause it can take 3 hours to do the file copy since that garbage MTP copies at like 900 kb/s or. You know how I get my stuff of my Go Pro's? I take the sd card out and slam it in to one of my DJI drones, then connect those to my PC. Fuck go pro. Such a bullshit arrogant American brand that should just die already.

I film and make hiking videos and have a ton of cameras. I do not like iPhone footage. Looks too sharpened and saturated to me. I used a GoPro for years. My current one is a GoPro Hero 11 Black and I absolutely love it. The 9 & 10 were buggy. The 8 was solid but the 11 is so much better. The 12 and 13 don’t have enough upgrades to justify. For better footage, set the field of view to linear. Gets rid of the fisheye look. Set sharpness and saturation each to -2. Set color profile to natural. Get smooth, steady shots and don’t swing it around like crazy. It’s a great starting point. Once you get the settings dialed in, you just need to press record for 99% of shots. So it’s easy to use. It’s durable and waterproof and small also. I don’t mount it to anything (unless I’m climbing or rappelling). I got a cheap tripod/extension handle off Amazon and just carry it. You won’t want all your footage to just be a straight ahead shot anyway. I just bought an action 4 but the verdict’s still out on that. If I were to recommend one camera it would be the DJI osmo pocket 3. I absolutely love it. But it’s pricey and if you’re starting out the GoPro will do good enough.

Do you already have accessories for the types of activities you want to do? Or is that a different amount you would spend? I have a Hero 11 Black Creator Edition with about $200 accessories. As well as an Action 5 Pro Adventure Combo with $150 of accessories. None of which includes water. I’d recommend doing some research on what you will need for the activities you want.

I have the pocket 3 and just ordered the action 5 pro, they are different cameras for different situations. For instance I can't/won't take the OP3 in the rain when I run, or at the beach, or in any situation where it might get damaged. The A5P is a tank so I can be way more careless about it. That is not to say it can't be used as a travel camera, I will actually bring it with me in Bologna next month, as my only camera. I had a gopro 11 black for this but with the amount of stuff that are wrong with it and the abysmal app situation, I switched to the A5P

You can just compare the footage. But purely for image quality gopro is quite ahead of DJI. Higher bitrates, three times the pixels in video for better cropping ability, way better stabilization.  Personally I prefer gopro colors since the 10-bit era starting from GP11.

The thing with gopro is to shoot unstabilized and stabilize in post with the gyro data and adjust the level of stabilization in post. No automated system works well if you are purposefully not using it as intented. I could never consider the current DJI offerings for flying fpv since the stabilization is unpredicatble and baked in to the footage.

My point was gopro handles even that better when used correctly. The fun part about gopro especially for us professionals is that it allows you to do anyting. No limitations so you can end up doing stuff that doesnt really work if you are not familiar with the art of videography. That said, I'd never use stabilization on driving footage when hard mounting the camera on the vehicle or when using chest mounts. I've learned to never mount the camera to a helmet since that just produces awful to look at footage that moves way too much.

There’s larger sensors in the insta Ace Pro2 and the DJI Action 5 that handle low light conditions very well. I have the GoPro 8, 11, and the DJI Action 5 and I always grab the DJI over the GoPro for night work.

I film exclusively on my iPhone 16 pro and my GoPro 11. I film all my family videos (sledding, a Disney trip, summer, random day trips) using these two cameras. The iPhone is better in terms of availability (always in my pocket) as well as low light. GoPro is good for beach and pool activities. Getting unique angles. Time lapses.

I got the go pro hero 11 last November. It was on offer for 150 GBP. It is stacked with features INCLUDING horizon lock and works a dream. I believe it has pass through charging, which means you can use it whilst charging. I bought the official underwater housing, which was expensive, but I've used it for diving and works a dream. For airsoft, I bought a knock-off housing, which is practically identical, and it gives good protection that will crack 1st before any damage to the camera. If you want to see footage from an airsoft game let me know if can send you a link.

My other cameras are: 1. ZV-E10 with Sigma 16mm and 30mm. I'm about to add a 10mm, because I want a wider main angle. 2. A7III with a 70-200 GM. That pair belonged to my office, but I've stolen it. 3. GoPro 11. 4. iPhone 16 Pro Max. 5. Insta360 One RS. I'm borrowing it from a friend who forgot I have it. 6. DJI Mini 3. I use each of them for different things. The ZV-E10 is my main angle when I'm shooting myself because the screen flips out. I use the A7III for a b camera when I'm shooting interviews and for telephoto b-roll. It's also my main photography camera. The GoPro is just for timelapses. My phone is for when I don't have another camera. The One RS is just for weird b-roll. The drone is just for establishing shots. Is it overkill? Yes. I could probably do the entire thing with the Pocket 3 and the drone. But for my specific usage, I would give up the Pocket 3 before I gave up the ZV-E10. I'm not saying that you should do that though.

Since you're doing night photography, you'll be using long exposures and pretty much any GoPro that can shoot Raw will be fine. The 11 and higher have the highest resolution though at 27mp and are much better for things like timelapses.

Try for an 11, 12 or 13. Newer the better, yes, but the 11, 12 and 13 are all basically the same camera just with feature improvements. They are the "modern" generation of GoPros, which brings the taller 8:7 sensor, 10 bit color, Log encoding etc, noise reduction control etc.

Go for the 12 Black from the Hero 4. It’s got way better stabilization, longer battery life, and sharper video. If you’re comparing, the 12 is more battery-efficient and handles bright lighting better, which is great for both water and stainless steel surfaces compared to the 11. Yeah, the Hero 13 has slightly better low-light performance, but unless he’s filming at night, it’s not really worth the extra cost really. If you’re getting two GoPros, I’d go for two Hero 12s to keep the video quality consistent. One can be overhead for cooking and the other gets close-ups? or for fishing, one can be chest-mounted while the other is set up for wide shots. [10 Best Action Cameras to Invest in 2025: Full Guide and Review](https://alaskanarrows.com/10-best-action-cameras-to-invest-in-2025/) would be useful too. But if you want a more budget-friendly option, a Hero 12 + Hero 11 Mini is a good combo—same great video, but the Mini is lighter and easier to mount so he can be creative with it ya know . For accessories, is he editing on his phone or laptop? That might affect which accessories are worth grabbing too but a suction cup or magnet mount for kitchen shots, and a Floaty Case or Waterproof Dome for underwater footage. Tldr: 12 black is the best, get two of them and a floaty case plus suction cup as accessories

Yeah it is overkill. Overkill in both price and features because though they’re great as action cameras, you don’t need the stabilization, high frame rates, and rugged design for your casual travel videos mate. If you really want one, you can get an older GoPro (Hero 9, 10, or 11) if you find a good deal since they still have solid stabilization and decent built-in mics (still relatively heavy when clipped to a cap, and after 30 minutes, you might feel the strain honestly) I’d suggest you check on the Insta360 GO 3, it’s tiny, weighs only 35g, and comes with a magnetic clip that can be attached to a cap more comfortably than a bulky GoPro. Otherwise, you could also check on the DJI Osmo Action 4 or Akaso Brave 7 LE too, all decent prices for your use case. You could try [10 Best Action Cameras to Invest in 2025: Full Guide and Review](https://alaskanarrows.com/10-best-action-cameras-to-invest-in-2025/) for other options too. Tldr: GoPro overkill, Insta360 more appropriate, can consider getting an older GoPro like the 9,10 or 11 if you can get a good price

I don’t necessarily agree that the latest one would be the best because though the 13 Black is the newest “best” model its upgrades over the 12 and 11 are minimal i.e. slight improvements in HDR/color and uses the same Enduro battery which is already in the 11 and 12. So the best would be to get the 11 Black. But if your budget is still too tight for that you can go for a more compact Hero 11 Mini that keeps the performance up but without the screens. If you’re looking for more then you can try [10 Best Action Cameras to Invest in 2025: Full Guide](https://alaskanarrows.com/10-best-action-cameras-to-invest-in-2025/) Cheers and sorry for the long long reply!

Yes, I regularly do night photography with my GoPros - Hero10 through 13, as well as 360 cameras. But I want to stress that your subject needs to also be stationary - it’s not like you can film wildlife with this approach. But if you’re just trying to capture trees or landscapes, depending on how much moon & starlight you have, this might work fine. Can you give more detail about the types of images you want to capture?

Anything from GP11 till 13 would do just fine. All are waterproof and in general good action cameras. They are great for shots during daylight and night lapses, but not fantastic for low light shooting. In general 13 would be the best, and with all technology, buying the latest version future proofs your camera. I got a GP11 a couple of years back to go on a snorkelling holiday and i still use it. If you can get your hands on a good priced one then go for it. There will be minor benefits if you get a more modern one but I dont think i can give you a full rundown. I was in the same situation as you before christmas and ended up with the Ace Pro 2, after doing a fair amount of research. And the reason is… Low light performance. DJI Osmo Action 5 beats GoPro by a mile here, but the Insta 360 Ace Pro 2 is even better than the DJI. The thing that has annoyed me the most with my GoPro is how grainy and bad the footage gets below 10 meters due to low light. While diving Alor this summer, my dive guide had the ace pro 1, and the difference in low light footage compared to my GoPro 11 black was mindblowing. I recommend to look at some comparisons at youtube!

You could find a used GoPro 11 under that budget, way better than the basic GoPro Hero which I don't recommend it, nor the Akaso/SJCam action cameras, audio quality is bad and stabilization it's not that great. The Insta360 Ace camera it's slightly over your budget, could be worth it, but still I think the GoPro 11 it's a bit better.

I still like Gopro for the full 8:7 sensor readout, which lets you crop easily for 16:9 and 9:16. But don't bother getting anything newer than the Hero 11 if they are more expensive, there are no significant changes in the newer models. But general consensus seems to be that the DJI Action series is better these days, especially in low light.

I just got an ace pro 2, and the night and day difference in raw video from my hero 11 is crazy. Crystal clear shots. Amazing low-light footage. The tiktokers and influencers aren’t wrong. The GoPro is absolutely the weakest of these cameras…except in underwater. From all the research I’ve done, for some reason, GoPro still shoots best underwater. Don’t know if it’s a mixture of the exposure the other cameras have that improve daytime video, so it over exposes underwater.

they are all 90% the same (this includes older models) with similar advantages and drawbacks (compared to other camera types) unless you compare them side by side, the results will be more than good enough, no matter which you choose gopro has slight disadvantage in low light - but its action camera, low light isn't what its designed for or its intended use on the other hand it has advantage in the new lenses (even thou I think they are a gimmick) its up to you what among the little detail differences is import to you dji action 5 seems like the best option right now, but DJI had (has) its own problems (like release with limited bitrate) personal I hate the way dji is controlled (but that might be because I am long time gopro user) just pick the you one like and you can buy cheapest and dont forget to consider older models, gopro 11 was sold on sale for 100€ and its perfectly comparable to the 13 or action 5

I don’t know which will be better for you. But I have been on the Go Pro train way too long and I will be getting off. The Go pro over heats non stop. BTW I have the Hero11 and the Hero 13. Both of them have overheating issues. That’s really it but it’s enough that I’m not able to continue recording in the southeast for more than about 20 minutes. But I have been wanting The newest insta 360 and DJI always has a premium feel. Now aside from that I use the Canon R6mkii for video or photos. But I always said that if I went more in depth with video I would purchase a Sony line up.

I’d get a GoPro and underwater housing long before I bring my phone under with me. I thought about buying a case like divevolk for when I’m hanging out on decompression stops (long boring stops underwater after deep diving) to read and watch movies but my practical consideration is that I need to have my phone on the surface because my family needs to hear from me and what if there was an emergency or something happened that I needed a phone, but my phone was dropped or flooded because of a case failure I’d be very upset.. I think my solution will be to get used phone from eBay that I don’t activate a cellular plan for but use it for it’s native functions like the camera, and bring that underwater with me. But a GoPro underwater if you drop it you haven’t lost all your photos, contacts, text history and so on so forth Edit: get a GoPro Hero 10, 11 or 12 (better price, and they don’t over heat as much as the new ones under water) with a dive housing

Overheating is caused by using poor settings choices for the filming type being done. Set up your camera properly for the filming type and it won't overheat. There's no difference in low light between the Hero 10, 11, 12 and 13 since they all use the same sensor. The only difference is the amount of "Denoise" being selectable (or being able to disable it completely using labs) which means better opportunity to denoise in post. Frankly using the labs and post processing will get you better low light results with a Hero camera [https://snokefilm.no/labs/gopro-11-labs-max-video-quality](https://snokefilm.no/labs/gopro-11-labs-max-video-quality)

The GoPro Hero 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 are all the same size and use mostly the same accessories (HB series lenses for the Hero 13 are not backwards compatible, nor are the Hero 13 batteries backwards compatible). Dive cases and mounts are all the same. If you have a dive case for a Hero 9 or 10, it will fit the Hero 11, Hero 12 and Hero 13. The Hero 9 and 10 have the same sensor. The Hero 11, 12 and 13 also all have the same sensor which is just a taller version of the sensor used in the Hero 9 and 10. The proper settings will make all the difference when filming in different lighting scenarios. Filming in a flat profile and color grading in post is the best option for Hero 11 and earlier. Filming in GPLog and color grading in post will work best for the Hero 12 and 13. The GoPro Labs firmware has several tweeks (including a DIVE mode) for helping with stabilization underwater as well as color balance for the temp (color) of the water. Your sharpness should also be set to low when recording.

Supposedly the 8 was made during covid and has so-and-so issues, **No, the 8 was made long before covid and it was a great camera. However it did have a "hot pixel" issue with the sensor that would result in fixed blue or red (or both) dots during low light footage.** 9 had blah blah issues, **The 9 was the Covid camera, delayed multiple times and just plain didn't work upon release. There's a well known audio clicking issue when using the in camera mics and it was the last camera to use the GP1 processor (which meant the camera was underpowered and lacked certain abilities such as clipping full resolution footage and being able to offload those clips in camera).** 10 freezing, **The 10 doesn't have freezing issues, it was the first camera to use the GP2 processor and it is a rock solid camera. "Freezing" comes from having a corrupt SD card which hasn't been repaired.** 11 corruption problems, **The Hero 11 improved upon the rock solid reliability of the Hero 10 and added even more features such as a taller 8:7 sensor, 10bit color and "in camera" night effects. Once again, people using corrupt SD cards or incorrect SD cards would suffer issues.** 12 overheating, **The 12 had all new firmware written for it that took full advantage of the GP2 processor. This enabled bluetooth audio, HDR video, timecode support etc. The issue with overheating is the same with all action cameras (regardless of brand). People have no idea how to film or set up their camera's and will often use the highest "action" settings available as they go for a "walk" or stand around "Fishing" and then wonder why their camera overheats.** 13 becomes a homewrecker... **The 13 is GoPro's most user friendly camera yet. All new thermal design, all new automatic lens detection, Upgraded Wifi, Upgraded Bluetooth, HLG HDR and more. It's GoPro's best camera yet with some amazing features added to the labs firmware.** Maybe 14 will make you commit tax fraud. **If only it were capable of making people smarter and doing better research about camera's........**

Any GoPro starting with 9 is solid. 8 is decent, just the 9 forward have a removable lens, so you can easily put on an ND filter, which I highly recommend if you're going to be in sunlight. I think the 11 is the first with 10bit video, so it'll give you a bit better color in the gradient, but tbh most people won't notice a difference, but it would give you more options if you are planning on doing any color grading. That tiny Insta 360 camera is pretty cool honestly and I do like the flip screen they offer on their action cam, but GoPro still has better video. If you want a 360 cam, idk, but I've heard the Insta360 is better than the GoPro max, but I've never used either, so..

Its pretty much a brick. All versions of Gopro have problems. Id goggle "Gopro xx known issues" Make sure the version you are looking at will work for you.

if you are up to post processing (color correcting / grading) gopro is the beast. honestly i'm not a fan of quik as well but premiere does all my stuff. if you are more into auto mode and prepared stuff, dji can a be go, too. never liked insta series for underwater footage, just not my cup of tea. you can check my profile, i'm only posting underwater footage for various subs. all shots made by gopro (some of them with 8, some of them 11 and rest is 13). also i'm a freediver so all my footages are above 15 meters. to be precise my most shots are between 5-12 meters. Thus, i don't need much of an external light source. I was using dji from time to time, too but their aggressive marketing strategy (our camera is best rest is shit) really make me put my dji away.

Yeah maybe! My only concern is that I'll be heading to Cyprus in a few months and diving on a wreck that lies in 25-40m of water. At that depth, everything is gonna look blue so I wanted a camera that would be able to capture the best possible lighting. I'd have it mounted to a rig with two powerful LED lights but the DJI has a colour sensor and HDR which enhances the colours amazingly. My GoPro 11 did ok in shallow water last year but you could tell that it was struggling a bit.

I’m working on a commercial fishing boat this summer and I originally bought the hero 11. After I did a lot of research i decided to pay $50 more to get the hero 12. My main reason was it would save me money on the microphone. The hero 11 doesn’t have Bluetooth while the 12 does. And I wanted to be able to use my AirPods as a microphone, this may not be the best mic but for what I want to do it’ll save me more money then having to buy more GoPro stuff to set up wireless mics, and will save me more money to start off. Also from what I’ve read the hero 12 has better battery life! Anyways my GoPro gets in tomorrow so I won’t know how good it all works till I try it out! After buying attachments and SD card I spent about $400 USD

I treat my cameras as true action cams - almost everything I shoot is downhill‑mountain‑bike POV (with some snowboarding stuff in the winter). My two kids and I rotate between two GoPro Hero 7s and a Hero 11, and in bright daytime conditions the footage is consistently crisp. I also own an Insta360 One X2 and X4; they’re great for occasional 360‑degree shots (especially when we’re filming the kids in the snowboard terrain park), but their image quality still lags behind the GoPros in the daylight settings we ride, in my opinion. Lots of sponsored “reviews” frame these cameras as vlogging rigs, which shifts the conversation toward low‑light performance and front‑facing features. That’s useful if you’re shooting downtown at midnight, but for daytime action sports I’d rather see companies double down on ruggedness, stabilization, and ease of use than chase vlogging use cases. Bottom line: today’s action cams are all solid, yet GoPro remains my default. I’m still curious about the DJI Osmo Action 5, though. I’d like to see whether DJI can match the reliability I’ve come to expect from their drones.

I use a GoPro11 Black, and it serves me quite well for my snorkelling adventures and whatnot I feel like id probably buy new again, because age/defects can be really annoying and you dont wanna buy a second hand one not knowing if it would have died faster than a new one (your choice though) and the batteries go shit after time too, so new batteries would be ideal for longest recording and not expanding and whatnot But also do absolutely whatever

I REEAALLLY wanted to get the Action 5 Because GoPo has been FF-ing’ up that last 8 years or so. My GoPro 11 looks far better than the GoPro 13. I couldn’t believe that the image quality has basically stated the same since the GoPro 8. That one is my favorite. Small form factor, bad ass 4K footage. Only downside low battery life. So I changed to the GoPro 11 with Enduro Batteries. Game Changer. The ONLY reason I considered leaving GoPro was because I use my DJI Mics and the GoPro mic is not that good. BUT it has NO good Bluetooth audio when connected to the DJI. Just terrible. So I’m stuck recording separately audio and video. Such a damn hassle to find the matching videos and audio post processing. If DJI would have better video quality I’d buy it in a heartbeat along with the DJI mini mics, using Bluetooth. Man both companies are really FF-ing’ up. I’m hoping the new GoPro 14 has good Bluetooth audio so I can upgrade.

Yeah another content creator I know, uses DJI action 4 and now the 5. Their editor has to heavily alter it to make it look better. But I love DJI.. I have their drones, their wireless microphones.. almost bought their gimbal but I went with insta360..I REALLY want their Osmo pocket 3 to replace the insta 360 but their price… eh.. I have seen countless reviews comparing the action 5 and GoPro 13,12, etc. Their video quality is getting there, but it still looks like a Ring 4k/surveillance camera instead of an action camera. GoPro just always nails it, even though the quality looks the same across the GoPro 10-13. I like the GoPro 11’s quality best. I had it before sending it in and getting the 12’s for $108.. Their enduro battery is also game changer.

I had the DJI osmo action 5 (bought after watching reviews online) and i was very disappointed by the performance, lack of details and preset tones. I returned and switched to a Ace Pro 2. It’s perfectly complementary to my Gopro , has s lot of features gopro hasn’t figured out and photos and stills are absolutely good. I wouldn’t go in the water with it though. But it’s far from trash!

Hi i give you my opinion: 1.i never tried the ace pro so i cannot say 2. I currently have one and i highly recommend it also for your purposes. Might want to buy a spare battery. The stills are pretty good as i expected but i use it for hiking and videos are stabilized and they don’t need almost any editing. 3. I tried it and didn’t fit my demands which are very similar to yours. 4. last gopro i bought is the 11. I tried the 12 and 13 from friends and never felt the need to upgrade. They are overall good action cameras but i think the ace pro 2 is superior. Gopro seems out of ideas since a while and chase the competitors. I would recommend it only if you use it alot in the water.

I know you're looking at an upgrade, but I want to point out that you can do macro on a GoPro with a Backscatter flip system. I had a GoPro hero 11 with the flip and +15 macromate and was pleased with the footage. Here are example pictures from the Red Sea: [https://www.reddit.com/r/scuba/comments/182zg6d/red\_sea\_gopro\_macro\_macromate\_flip\_macrowide\_light/](https://www.reddit.com/r/scuba/comments/182zg6d/red_sea_gopro_macro_macromate_flip_macrowide_light/) and an example video I made after diving in the Philippines last year (plenty of macro shots - it's not the most stable footage and color correction isn't very good, either): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aKDx01FVEE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aKDx01FVEE) Now, it doesn't compare at all to my new Mirrorless setup, but it's also like $5k cheaper, so you get what you pay for. The idea of mirrorless/SLR that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is pretty much non-existent. I used the GoPro as my "proof of concept" that I could get close enough to subjects and learn about composing macro videos. Once I decided I loved it, I made the splurge and bought a used setup. Even buying most things used, it was a lot of money.

I hope this helps : I have the GoPro 11 and I regret my decision. It’s all about the audio really. In order to get better audio, you have to use the media mod, which is an extra expense. I’m on my second one after my first broke on me. I really really really really wish GoPro would issue a firmware update to unlock the USB port to allow any accessory to connect. Then the process of attaching a mic actually kinda sucks. We do travel vlogging and run and gun kinda shooting. And it takes a second after turning the camera on for the sound to start working. I also think the footage we get is kinda … bad. That’s my fault, but you do have to work to get good footage. It’s got a very zoomed out look, and everything looks small and distant. I hate the lack of simple zoom, which sucks for vlogging. If I were starting again I’d get the DJI Pocket 3. In fact I’m considering getting one anyway and relegating my GoPro to diving only. Positives though. The cloud storage is good.

Not crying over it, but with me using a GP 11, the GP 14 Black would have been welcome, but only with the right upgrades. GoPro certainly is having a much harder time competing w/ the Chinese Action Cam market with their better specs, definitely better low light performance (Reviewers biggest complaint), and better image quality, with the latter opinion being according to some "YouTube experts." Maybe the "new GP3 processor" in the Max2 might not be ready to be placed in a smaller body, maybe can't dissipate the heat generated for a new GP 14, maybe haven't improved the "all-important" low light performance to compete in today's market, or maybe finally being smart about where their resources should be in order to compete for consumer dollars? For now, my Hero 11 is absolutely fine. It'll be interesting when all the reviews come out on the Max2 where their market share slides, up or down...and how few LIT GoPro's are purchased for the nighttime selfie videographers!!

The Gopro has nice colors and super stabilization. The Ace Pro 2 is just fantastic all around. Can't go wrong with either from my use. Lastly, the 11 uses the same chipset as the newest 13. The 13 does have some newer features but the 11 is just solid and cheap on the used market.

Welcome to the GoPro world! If you want to buy used, get a GoPro Hero 13. Used/pre-owned get a Hero 11 (the 12 had some unfavorable updates). If you find some good deals, the GoPro Hero 9 is the oldest of the "modern" family of GoPro cameras. GoPro releases a new model every ~1 year and the updates have been great. Some people may complain that a new model isn't "significantly better" than the previous model to a degree of warranting an upgrade, but I'm fine with that, they just want to push the best tech currently possible. The camera itself is waterproof but you'll need to rinse it after submerging in salt water. I have surfed quite a few times with my Hero 9 and Hero 13 and I've had no problems. The gopro is submersible to a certain range so you'll want to check that first but if you're just surface snorkeling you'll be just fine. The GoPro is perfectly capable without any extra lenses but personally I recommend the UltraWide lens mod if you do get anything. On the stock lens the newer cameras have linear, wide, superwide, and hyperview already. You'll want to get the "The Handler", a GoPro handle that floats in water in case you let go of it. Other than that you'll need a good SD card and you're all set - needs to be one from the approved list on the GoPro website (but not necessarily bought directly from there). MicroSD cards need to have high quality reading/writing speeds to avoid video corruption. Feel free to send me a message and I can give you a lot more information or we can work out a call or something. I have a lot of experience and I really love my GoPro :)

GoPro Hero 11, 12, 13, et al **Image Stabilization:** The #1 thing you want is image stabilization and GoPro is the best. There's absolutely no reason to film anything if the end result is all shaky and unwatchable, doesn't matter how beatiful the colors are or how nice the contrast looks, etc. Also, you can run "GoPro Labs" official hackware which lets you program functionality and parameters into the cam via QR. **-- The following is true of all action cams regardless of brand --** **Battery life**: Batteries on these things do not last no matter what brand. Battery tech is all the same - no one brand has some magic tech that makes batteries last 5x longer and all battery life sucks. ***You have to run these off external packs*** unless you want to change batteries every 45 to 60 minutes. For reference: I do 24 hour timelapse shots (4K) and a 40,000 mah battery will power a GoPro for almost exactly 24 hours (I get 5% battery remaining when I go get the cameras) but that is doing timelapse which is a photo every 0.5 or 1.0 seconds - If you are filming 4k *video* footage the battery usage drops SIGNIFICANTLY and your storage usage SKYROCKETS. **Overheating**: Action cams are meant to have airflow or at least not be filming static 4K/120fps shots in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. The OG idea of an action cam was something small, rugged, element-proof, with good image stabilization that you could throw on a surfboard, motorcycle, hang glider, etc. and get some crazy shots. These cams will overheat quickly taking video at 4K and slowly taking video at 1080. In this context (no airflow) ***you will most likely experience thermal shutdown before the battery is depleted*** regardless of recording settings. When I capture stuff during summer or hot days with direct sunlight I put a USB-powered fan right up next to the camera running off another 40,000 mah battery pack. **Auto-splice:** You want the video to be cut into chunks in case something goes wrong. This way you don't potentially lose the entire video. Also, you really don't want to start building mega-GB size files, they get unwieldy and depending on the file allocation table of your storage device, it might not recognize files over a certain size. **Don't buy an action cam with unrealistic expectations.**

I had the second GoPro they released - and then every 2 years I upgraded to the latest model I finished up with a GoPro 8 and 11 sold them both and went to the DJI Action 4 - and then picked up the Action 5 Pro (I like to have 2) I find them better in many ways - but startup time - processing power - battery LIFE are all great upgrades

I bought some GoPros a few years back (11s). They quality has really improved a lot since the early versions, as have the features. All of the newer ones can shoot up to 4-5K. They’re also waterproof and don’t require a case if you want to dunk them (up to 30ish feet…?) I also like the image stabilization software built into them. I record on my kayak a lot and it’s nice to not get seasick when viewing my footage. If you buy one and plan to shoot all day, consider getting a 256 GB micro SD card, which will hold 8-12 hours of video. You should also have some spare batteries or an external power source, as the batteries last 1-1.5 hours, depending on the outside temperature (they don’t last as long in the cold). Here’s some sample of footage, if you care to see it: [Kayak_Chris YouTube Channel](https://www.youtube.com/@kayak_chris)

I mean, you said your 11 does it fine, the 12 and 13 weren’t massive upgrades, the native LOG is a nice but you can get that with GoPro labs. If it works, it’s better image quality than anything I’ve see from Insta, still a bit better than the action 5 imo. Stabilization does use more battery, you can shut it off and use Gyroflow or Reelsteady in post to avoid the battery drain. If you’re moving around outside where there’s usually *some* air flow, it really shouldn’t overheat. My 11, in a media mod case, can record in 90+ degree heat all afternoon without overheating as long as I’m moving around. Honestly tho, Insta360 isn’t a company I’d consider trustworthy. Pretty much every release this sub is full of people having QC issues as well as just a mismatch between advertised specs and real world usage. They tend to focus on novelty to get users interested and the actual camera usually leaves people wanting a bit more.

I’m not OP, but the 13 is a single lens camera with swappable lens covers that can change the FOV. The max 2 is out, you can order it now, and it’s a double lens 360 degree camera. They’re using the same sensors and lenses I believe. Do you want 360? If so, max 2 is your guy. Don’t care about 360? Then the 13 is good. Hell, the 10 and 11 are pretty damn good too.

I have a gopro10 and a gopro11 and both of them can be switched in linear mode, have good focus on 1 meter distance, so I would say they can be well used for this use case -- and the gopro13 I am sure, too. However when it comes to close-up recordings you will need a different camera, or maybe some lenses that enable that. I have no experience with wireless mics, but I mount a rhode mic on the gopro, and can say it's performance would be well suited for this use case. Gopros can run hot (until they shutdown) when running longer, but this is not a problem for me, as I am usually not taking such long takes in one go. However I am saying that because you say you want less post production, maybe want to do longer recordings in one go. I do not know how the gopro13 handles overheating these days.

I have a hero 11 and a hero 10 and I am totally satisfied for the niche I am in (hiking videos). I am not even using both of their features to the fullest. I just want to have good 4K coverage which both the 11 and the 10 do just fine. And the fact that DJI is bypassing basic google playstore tests for android and you have to sideload apps for the cameras is in my POV an absolute nogo. I am fine with the gopro ecosystem, using their cloud, and would buy the 13 if I would have a need to. Yes, I do hope that they manage to somehow catch up on the technical side and I do acknowledge that other vendors may be technically better meanwhile, but simply this fact doesn't make me change as a customer immediately. More factors are playing into that decision. The cameras I have do just fine for what I require.

The newer GPs have slightly better video quality than an old iPhone. The sensor is larger on the GP11 and up (1/1.9" vs \~1/2.5" on the iP11) but the lens is significantly wider. You can try using an app like Blackmagic Camera for a more professional interface: [https://apps.apple.com/us/app/blackmagic-camera/id6449580241](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/blackmagic-camera/id6449580241) GoPros are generally better for... action and on-the-move shots. Stabilization in-camera or post is better than older iPhones (without action mode). On the GoPro, you can simplify some changes by installing Labs firmware and using QR codes.

I have GoPro 11 and recently bought Action 5 Pro. DJI is way better, even considering that my GoPro is older. Keep in mind though it’s better to buy adventure combo (or other combo better suitable for you), and also floating handle if you plan to do snorkelling or scuba diving. GoPro is stuck with a small sensor for some reason, I was really surprised to learn that almost any modern smartphone has a larger sensor. You’d think action CAMERA would have state of the art sensor, but apparently not. In 2 years that I’ve had GoPro they managed to make software worse somehow. At some point transferring video from GoPro to iPhone became a nightmare, with constant failures and inability to continue transfer until you reboot the camera. UX is also horrible, the app will log you out every now and then, and will show pop ups promoting their subscriptions. GoPro enduro batteries were dying quite fast when it was cold outside (snowboarding at -15 C/ 5F). Maybe that’s because of their age, but I didn’t use it that much. And 1 of 2 batteries is already swollen. I’m yet to use DJI for snorkelling, but don’t expect any issues there. Given that it has depth sensor and larger camera sensor, I expect it to do great. Maybe I’ll find some annoying stuff about DJI camera in time (I’ve had it for month now, and only used it in one trip for snowboarding so far), but now it seems way better than GoPro (mostly because GoPro sucks for me)

I've been using the x5 more and more just for its versatility. I like to use the invisible stick and use it to get some fun POVs and selfies. An insta 360 will be the best choice, I don't have one but from talking to others it's a no brainer I'd say. The options with the footage are insane, with a traditional camera there's a way bigger chance that you got a shit angle etc. If you want a traditional camera your choice is probably either GoPro or DJI. I have a hero 11 and I don't love or fully hate it, the software is sometimes good and other times absolutely horrible. A lot of people online nowadays really dislike gorpos and praise the dji action, I have 0 experience and don't know anyone that does with them so idk but it's most likely a good choice. Edit: I feel like with a lot of what I film (not just skiing) I'd be way more likely to actually post some of it if I had the flexibility of a 360 camera.

In my experience DJI Action has better low light performance than GoPro. The larger sensor in the DJI makes for a bit of a difference. There are also action cameras from the Insta 360 brand that will have a 1" sensor. Your gym looks pretty well lit though so it may not be significant in your situation. Also with action cameras check out some reviews to make sure they won't overheat while recording. They aren't really meant for long stationary recording without any airflow like they would get when biking or something. For example my GoPro 11 will overheat after about \~30 mins at 4K60. I also have a DJI Action 2, it's a mini camera would would overheat even quicker at 4K60. The DJI Action 3 or newer can do 4K60 without overheating.

I assume you are only interested in video? If not, prepare to be disappointed. Action cams make for fairly poor still image cameras, though you can pull stills from video footage and sometimes they aren't too bad. If video is your goal, look for a used GoPro. You can typically find one with a ton of accessories for almost nothing. I started with a Hero 7 and recently picked up an 11. Not much difference between the two, but I do find that the underwater features in the 11 make for better off the camera footage. There is always someone selling the previous generation because they have to have the newest one. Save the cash for divegear!

The Mac/Windows software for the Max/Fusion was slow to roll out and buggy. They've been back and forth with other software such as Quik and the GoPro player. What puts GoPro ahead of other similar cameras is the 5k resolution and Labs firmware which allows the cameras to operate at their full capability. That said, despite only being 8-bit my Insta Ace Pro and Insta X3/X4 are fantastic in their respective categories. The Ace blows the GoPro 11/12 out of the water in poor lighting and it records rather large 4:3 HDR video at 60fps while the GoPro is limited to 30fps at 8:7 5k. All these cameras have their uses, the GoPro cameras will overheat far sooner than the Insta cameras but if you need consistent results for colour grading / gamuts then it's far easier to use a GoPro. The GoPro also has GPS (not the H12) while the Insta does not. So it's easier to pull and paint telemetry. GoPro has had the competition edge out some more modern quick connectors that they've now adapted. It's really a case of diversity within the field plus marketing. What sells GoPro is the marketing video. Putting the cameras in places where any action camera would look amazing, applying appropriate colour grading, frame interpolation etc. I'm shocked they didn't have a big video for the Hero 13 showcasing it but rather used smaller videos to demonstrate specific features such as the anamorphic lens, NDs, etc.

I would avoid GoPro Hero 10 or beyond. Those are the only Hero cameras I have experience with and they're a huge PITA especially for motorcycling. It either doesn't turn on, doesn't record, or records with no audio ALL THE TIME. If you happen to notice it's not turning on, then you get to pull over, take your helmet off, unmount the camera, and fiddle with it until you figure out what's not working. Usually requiring you to remove and reinsert the battery. It's the most frustrating thing ever on a bike and I'd argue dangerous since you're preoccupied with the camera instead of your ride. I tried working with a Hero 10 and 11 for over 2 years before I swore them off forever. I recently switched to Insta360 and couldn't be happier. The Insta has literally not one time malfunctioned or not recorded when I pressed the button. I also have an old DJI Osmo Action that never had reliability issues. I would say any Osmo Action gen or the previous gen Insta360 (R One or something like that I cant' remember the name) would do the job well. If part of its job is dashcam you might also consider a 360 camera. You'll have way butter luck catching incidents with it than a regular action cam. I also have a GoPro 360 MAX camera. Unlike the Hero cameras, it's been great. It's still glitchy at times but nowhere near the regularity of the Hero cameras. It's kind long in the tooth now too so you may be able to find them on a good deal somewhere.

Simple. 5.3k resolution. Allows you to crop in on videos and gives you the highest video quality. Sure Ace Pro 2 has 8k....at 30fps. 8K is just overkill and you won't get any decent looking slow motion out of 30fps. 5.3k is the sweet spot. If you want to do color correcting which the Ace Pro does automatically, you can easily tweak that in editing it's very simple. Until another action camera comes out with 5.3k resolution it's GoPro for me. Then hopefully the next GoPro will have 5.3k 120fps so we can get even higher quality slow motion. If you're shooting underwater get an AOI UWL-O3 lens attachment for it for increased clarity and ability to focus at closer range too.

In my experience, GoPro pros are great within 30 m and have a wide depth of field, but when it comes to color, correction and specific focus, they are severely lacking. If you are seriously interested in getting into the hobby of underwater photography, or videography, I would suggest looking at something like an Olympus tough TG – six or TG – seven. these are phenomenal cameras for the money and have all the modern features you want, including automatic white balance ability to shoot in 4K at 60 FPS, as well as having all of your standard aperture and shutter speed settings all in one convenient digital camera package. I think the TG6, which I personally use runs about $400 New. I started out with the DragonTouch 4K action camera and it was good enough. I started filming my games because I had just started playing again after 27 years away from hockey. I made friends with a few goalies I met here on Reddit who were kind enough to mentor me. Eventually, the video quality just wasn't good enough for what I needed. I invested in a gopro hero black, I believe I have the 11 or 12, and bought an aluminum case and suction mount on Amazon. The picture quality is amazing, and it makes filming and posting to youtube much more enjoyable since the footage is really sharp. Crease Quest on YouTube if you want to see the difference in camera quality. My oldest videos were all with the same camera. I tried editing and fiddling with the settings as much as I could, but when I switched to the GoPro it was a complete game changer. My home barn lets me mount the camera high inside the glass, which is why I bought the aluminum case. Other rinks I play at my son has to be behind the glass moving the camera between periods. EDIT: I also mounted a small external battery to the suction mount and have that plugged into the gopro during games so I don't run into any power issues.

I have the Hero black. Night time footage is good. However, the footage makes it look like you’re farther away from the subject than you actually are. That and it gets hot during extended replay while editing.

Many videos shown on YouTube are from the launch periods and are sponsored. Especially the DJI Action 5 was pushed pretty hard in my opinion. But they all make great videos. If you want low light performance I wouldn't go the gopro way. But in good light conditions I'd say the gopro still has the crown. For me the killer features though are 5.3k 8:7 and Gopro Labs which adds features no other action cam even comes close to. Those all help a lot for editing.

r/gopro • why does every comparison video on YT seem like to bashing Go pro 13 ? is it really that far behind the competitors ? ->

For me GoPro always had the best mic/audio balance. insta always sounded baseless and sucked at eliminating wind noise as well
