I have been using a GoPro 3 Black, 4 Black and now a 12 Black. I am using Solo Storm and its controls the camera we are using. The biggest challenge of any camera is mounting to get the view or perspective you are after.

Go for the 12 Black from the Hero 4. It’s got way better stabilization, longer battery life, and sharper video. If you’re comparing, the 12 is more battery-efficient and handles bright lighting better, which is great for both water and stainless steel surfaces compared to the 11. Yeah, the Hero 13 has slightly better low-light performance, but unless he’s filming at night, it’s not really worth the extra cost really. If you’re getting two GoPros, I’d go for two Hero 12s to keep the video quality consistent. One can be overhead for cooking and the other gets close-ups? or for fishing, one can be chest-mounted while the other is set up for wide shots. [10 Best Action Cameras to Invest in 2025: Full Guide and Review](https://alaskanarrows.com/10-best-action-cameras-to-invest-in-2025/) would be useful too. But if you want a more budget-friendly option, a Hero 12 + Hero 11 Mini is a good combo—same great video, but the Mini is lighter and easier to mount so he can be creative with it ya know . For accessories, is he editing on his phone or laptop? That might affect which accessories are worth grabbing too but a suction cup or magnet mount for kitchen shots, and a Floaty Case or Waterproof Dome for underwater footage. Tldr: 12 black is the best, get two of them and a floaty case plus suction cup as accessories

What types of environments do you typically film in? The Hero12 has a higher resolution sensor (over 2x the pixels of Action 4), which works best in bright sunny conditions. Its sensor also has a taller aspect ratio, which allows you to crop the same footage into a horizontal (YouTube) or vertical (IG / TikTok) format. The Action4’s sensor has a larger surface area, with fewer but larger pixels. This makes it perform better than the Hero12 in lower light / darker environments, but at the cost of overall resolution. Personally, I don’t bother with ANY action camera in a low light environment, but some folks do.  There are more variables to compare, such as stabilization, but it depends on how you plan to use the camera. Personally, I’ve been very happy with the Hero12, and own several of them

No, the Hero is not a good choice for this. You’d be much better getting a used Hero10, 11, or 12.  The new Hero camera is a starter camera for beginners who don’t need the highest quality. The camera has a very tiny lens / sensor, and footage is stabilized via GoPro’s mobile application. If you want a high quality action camera, those other models I listed will deliver higher results

The Hero12 is the latest & greatest, and can do everything you've listed. You'll want to get a Protective Case for scuba diving, as the camera is only rated to 33ft depths without a case. Watch GoPro footage of all the activities you plan to do, and take note of the angles / perspectives you find most interesting / fun to watch. From there, you can determine what accessories you'll need to capture the same angles

I just took a GoPro Hero 12 down to 60ft diving with a case and red filter, with stabilisation set to boost. Uploaded and composed on ipad then share. Very good video quality. DJI is pumping heaps of money into marketing their products. YouTube reviewers are, generally speaking, paid. The reviews always skew towards the company paying.

So firstly, I’m new to the action camera in general but lots of footage shot using iPhone in past and have a generally “Ok” knowledge of film and camera internals. BUT…I’m not a pro and think I need help. [D Log 4K60FPS no LUT AWB](https://reddit.com/link/1lhlql4/video/2l00ql7uxg8f1/player) After LOTS of research (literally months of review watching) I went for an action camera 4 because I couldn’t warrant the osomo 3 as my first “toe dip”. So I film vlogs and music vids and general life stuff as I’m a musician. I have started filming in D log (applying LUT after) and after lots and lots of searching for the “best settings” (serious minefield, I know) I film in 4k 60 fps (tried 120fps but generally I reduce to 60/30fps anyway) auto white balance and 16:9. (I think that’s everything. But the footage comes out super low quality footage around edges and general sharpness even with a pro light (nanlite - daylight) Did a recent shoot and had to use the Go Pro 12 black and it completely wiped the floor with the action camera 4. From what I’ve read, it must be something I’m missing? Any help is appreciated before I get rid of this cam and get a go pro.

Nothing will have it out of the box, since iphones do a ton of editing before you ever see the video. However, i have had good experiences with gopro hero 12, at least when it's been used while downhill skiing and snowboarding. I think i read that it has overheating issues though, so maybe not the best if you live in a warm climate.

I borrowed a friend’s hero 12 recently as I was looking to purchase my own. Good image quality, but the overheating was insane. I got decent battery life but they couldn’t get the same. So some is user error and some is luck of the draw for each person. For me, the overheating was enough to not buy a GoPro. But the software is awful and that’s the other reason I went with the DJI. So far it’s better in every way. 45gb internal memory, better battery life, no overheating, great software (flawlessly updated from my phone and file transfer was fast and flawless), the live view on the phone is awesome and allows full functionality of the camera. It works and works well. I don’t hate GoPro but the DJI is just better. GoPro stopped competing and other companies have caught up and surpassed in some ways.

They are all pretty good in feature sets now. I have been using the Ace Pro as my primary and GoPro Hero 12 as my backup for the last few months. Since you are new to editing, I would go with Ace Pro, it has excellent image quality, very easy menus, excellent mounting system, the best low light footage of any action camera in pure video mode, good still image quality and does some great time/hyperlapses. The Shotlab templates allow you to get some really cool advanced shots with minimal effort and their phone apps are powerful for editing on-device, especially for IOS. You will be very happy with it as long as you are not primarily vlogging or needing 10 bit color for advanced color grading, but that doesn't seem like your use case scenario. One other thing you might want to consider is the new Insta30 Go 3s. It is now 4k resolution, waterproof down to 33 feet. Super small when out of the action pod, but you can use the action pod if you want to increase recording time. The camera itself is magnetic and weighs around 40 grams. With the action pod, it is super easy to set up your shots. The small camera is very durable and can go places and get shots no other action camera can. Look at some of the 4k videos on Youtube - both the stabilization and quality are excellent. It might also be a good contender for you.

They have competition. Mainly insta360 and DJI from what I've seen. DJI seems to sponsor a LOOOOTTT of YouTubers so I don't trust those reviews. Insta360's low light capability seems impressive and obviously they have better 360 cams. I don't hate gopro but I do hate that the main selling point of the 13 was "purchase more lenses". And the quik app is kinda annoying. I wish GoPro would make another Session with in-camera stabilization That said I have a new 12 and loving it. My 8 is having problems after 3 years of lots of use

If you are using it for ACTION, meaning you will have to mount it to your head or chest or something - or if it will be getting wet, then go with the GoPro 11 or 12. If you are just walking and or standing and filming, then get the DJI Pocket 3. Picture is better, larger sensor, built in gimbal and has far superior image quality in low light. It is more expensive tho.

If I record for more than 14 minutes it will freeze and battery is already almost dead. This is at night night by the way so temperature isn't high. Fun camera but it's shit too

You're simply not going to get good audio due to wind noise etc with any camera. This is why more sailing footage in movies etc use very expensive large mics out of frame and a lot of ADR and Foley afterwards. Battery and FOV wise, go for the Hero 11 or 12. They both have a much larger 8:7 sensor and this increases your FOV. The Hero 12 is compatible with the Max Lens Mod 2.0 which increases the FOV while giving you 360 horizon lock in 4K. Both cameras have much larger batteries than the Hero 4 and have in camera stabilization.

Battery life: 10, however it's settings dependent, film with proper settings and film properly, a single battery can last you the entire day. Go around filming hours of "nothing burger footage", not only do you have an editing nightmare on your hands, but depending on settings, you may get less than an hour. Usually using proper settings and proper filming technique, my battery could run for nearly 2 hours non stop (but I would never shoot that way as that would be insane). Stabilization: 10, GoPro won technical emmy awards for their stabilization, who am I to argue? Water Resistance: 10, The camera is waterproof if you close the doors properly and haven't bent the doors like some people have. Resolution: 10, the camera records in 5.3K. You need a beefy system to edit it, but we're rating the camera, not your editing system. Frame Rate: 9, There are numerous frame rates available, and you need to select the proper one for the filming you're doing. I give the Hero 12 a 9 out of 10 as the Hero 13 improved the frame rates with burst slow motion options. Your friends likely read some online hysteria about GoPro's without any proper 1st hand experience or knowledge of them. The fact is they are a hugely popular model and this means that professionals and amateurs get to use them. Professionals have no issues, amateurs who don't bother to actually learn about their camera, may have issues if they aren't willing to learn how to avoid issues (terrible cheap SD cards being used, trying to film a static scene using action settings etc).

GoPro's are quite good camera's for this, however you need to know how to set your camera up properly. "Interviewing" people isn't exactly an "Action" environment so therefore you need to set your camera up with the correct settings for a "non action" environment, it's literally that simple. Get yourself either a GoPro Hero 12 or 13, some spare batteries or the Volta and the media mod. If you're filming 3 to 5 minutes at a time, overheating with a properly setup camera will never be an issue.

Overheating is caused by using poor settings choices for the filming type being done. Set up your camera properly for the filming type and it won't overheat. There's no difference in low light between the Hero 10, 11, 12 and 13 since they all use the same sensor. The only difference is the amount of "Denoise" being selectable (or being able to disable it completely using labs) which means better opportunity to denoise in post. Frankly using the labs and post processing will get you better low light results with a Hero camera [https://snokefilm.no/labs/gopro-11-labs-max-video-quality](https://snokefilm.no/labs/gopro-11-labs-max-video-quality)

A: GoPro only recently released a version of "Quik" for desktop this year. it was actually a copy of their "Quik" for mobile app but with a lot LESS functionality. Due to fact very few people even bothered using it (why bother if the mobile app offered more functionality) GoPro decided not to continue throwing money at developing an app no one was using. B: People who edit using a desktop tend to want professional editing and this is why many use paid programs like Premier Pro or free professional quality editing programs like DaVinci Resolve. Not sure why you think the Hero 13 is not having "compatible features in areas" as that statement makes no sense. I have used the Hero 4, Hero 6, Hero 8, Hero Fusion, Hero Max, Hero 9, Hero 10, Hero 11, Hero 12 and Hero 13. I can say without a doubt that the Hero 13 is my favorite of these so far due to the amount of features it offers and the new lens options. If I had to choose between the Hero 12 and Hero 13, I'd choose the 13 with no hesitation.

You depending on your cell phone quality, they have cellphone scuba housings that cost a few hundred dollars and most cell phones have better quality of video and photos than mid to high end dive cameras nowadays. Hero 12 with a super suit is probably around $500. I personally shoot video at 4K 60fps and then extract photos from that. Plus GoPro has a subscription for unlimited storage in the cloud with is nice. You can get some dive lights with 12k lumens or more for a hundred dollars each for cameras off Amazon until you get in a position to upgrade and really make your camera rig. I started off really cheap, used hero 5 with a float handle attachment and cheap light. I made a camera tray and bought a better light. Now I’m wanting more. For snorkeling I use the float handle and the cheaper light attachment. It all depends on what you budget is but either way your gonna need some basics which ever route you go. A light with high output of lumens, a way to attach it to your camera, a housing for the camera, and a tray or handle of some sort to attach everything together. The light and camera will be your high costs and some cases your light may be more expensive or equally expensive as your camera/housing. For anything good you’re going to be spending less than $1000 total. eBay’s a good resource but comes with risks. Also, things to consider is a case for transporting your equipment, extra batteries(depending on your camera you go with).

1. Battery Life, is average nothing impressive but not bad either. could improve it with Quick Charging like other Brands, GP 12 lagging in this part. but you could always carry a spare batteries so its not a deal breaker 2. Stabilization, is very good. as long there is plenty of light the video will come out good, other competitor also very good 3. Water resistance i havent tested yet without diving case, because its an expensive camera so i always use diving case whenever i use it near water, not going to take a chance with rust and water. 4. Resolution, i can't distinguish 5,3k vs 4K they look the same for me, sorry i can't really help here 5. Frame Rate, the higher the framerate the faster the camera generate heat and then overheat. use with caution, use high frame rate sparingly that is my experience in using my GP12, i hope that helps

I got both the DJI Action 4 and GoPro 12. and honestly here is what people dosen't seems to talk about GoPro 13. They Charge Stupid amount of money for rubbish quality accesories. case and point i need to buy Media Mod to get decent audio on GP12.... the quality is rubbish while DJI Action 4 just flawlessly connect to DJI Mic without the need to buy another pieces of accesories My note here is GoPro selling you extra pieces like lens, new battery, etc will add up alot. While DJI Action 4 here is everything you need and done. Image Quality wise from an action camera standard has "plateued" and nobody can recognize one is better than the other by that much, its from an action cam and nobody care from which brand it is from.

The GoPro 12 without a battery is only 120g, less that the hero 11 mini at 133g. You can also turn a fullsize into a naked down the line.   The best quality right now is between the GoPro 12 and the DJI action 4, both have their own strengths and weaknesses.   If weight is a concern, the DJI action 2 is the best quality camera I've found <60g stock.

I have a mirrorless (canon EOSR), GoPro 12, Osmo pocket 3, insta360 x4 and others over the years. I film camping, hiking, canyoneering and rock climbing. All those cameras have their place and strengths. The full frame with a 35mm f1.8 shot wide open can create such pretty images it’ll make you cry. But it’s expensive, heavy, has poor stabilization and isn’t weatherproof, so it’s mostly for b roll or if I have to record a wrap up at home. I used GoPros for years as my main camera. When you learn the settings that are right for you, it can get a pretty good image. (Make sure you turn down sharpness to -2 and color to natural for the most impactful improvement. I also shoot linear or do a lens correction in post to get rid of the fisheye look for most shots. Add an edutidge ETM-001 mic and the media mod kit and it’s a great all around camera for outdoor stuff. But damn. Once I learned to use the Osmo properly (main upgrade was shooting D log and using the REC709 recovery lut and add a cage to attach the mic mini for better sound), it quickly became my go to camera. It’s not waterproof or as rugged as the GoPro, but it’s water resistant. The gimbal takes some getting used to. But once I got it dialed in, I absolutely love it. It bridges that gap between action cam and full frame in image quality. Even has a bit of bokeh, which is nice. I’ve found it replacing my full frame more and more if I have to film at home, so it would probably work for your craft projects. So my vote goes to the Osmo. GoPro (12 or newer) is a solid choice as well, although you lose some image quality and it doesn’t perform nearly as well indoors. But it might work as a B cam well enough.

I film and make hiking videos and have a ton of cameras. I do not like iPhone footage. Looks too sharpened and saturated to me. I used a GoPro for years. My current one is a GoPro Hero 11 Black and I absolutely love it. The 9 & 10 were buggy. The 8 was solid but the 11 is so much better. The 12 and 13 don’t have enough upgrades to justify. For better footage, set the field of view to linear. Gets rid of the fisheye look. Set sharpness and saturation each to -2. Set color profile to natural. Get smooth, steady shots and don’t swing it around like crazy. It’s a great starting point. Once you get the settings dialed in, you just need to press record for 99% of shots. So it’s easy to use. It’s durable and waterproof and small also. I don’t mount it to anything (unless I’m climbing or rappelling). I got a cheap tripod/extension handle off Amazon and just carry it. You won’t want all your footage to just be a straight ahead shot anyway. I just bought an action 4 but the verdict’s still out on that. If I were to recommend one camera it would be the DJI osmo pocket 3. I absolutely love it. But it’s pricey and if you’re starting out the GoPro will do good enough.

If you do low light riding (night or overcast weather), go with Ace Pros. It has much better dynamic range and much higher image quality in low light. I use a GoPro Hero 12 - I just live with the fact that I won’t capture near the corners or directly below the camera. I usually place my camera a lot higher on the glass inside the court as can’t stand the sounds coming from the club and other courts when playing back (out of some 90 matches - it’s only been hit once - and we played a let lol). I have a wider angle lens but not tried it. You’ve just reminded me to try it lol… For me the speed of editing (cutting out the fault first serves, reclaiming balls etc) is a priority given that I play some 2-3x a week so need to review asap with my partner for learning points for the next game. I would imagine a 360 camera would capture a lot more of the corners but it may still need to be inside the court and the file sizes will be huge (I’ve never tried). Also some distortion on the outer edges of the frame maybe? BTW with my current setup, I asked ChatGPT a lot of questions about the best way to do this including editing, file sizes, battery life, stopping the camera overheating especially in hot conditions and it actually came back with some pretty good tips. Might ask it about the corners and if theres a better set up/ position.

I have two kids, aged 8 and 4, and I love my GoPro for filming them, especially on holidays. I had a GoPro 8 and recently bought a GoPro 12 just for that. As others have mentioned, you can get better video quality with a modern smartphone, but I would never risk putting a €1000+ phone made of glass in my children's hands. However, I can give them the GoPro without any worries because it will survive anything, and usually end up with absolutely incredible footage. The stabilization is great and the wide angle allow to get the footage done even if you don't pointy exactly to the right place, as kids always do. Also if you setup the video the operation of the camera is just one button: press to turn it on and film, press again to stop and turn it off. Can't be easier. Another thing I really like about the GoPro is the online service. Just by plugging in the GoPro to charge, it sends the files to the cloud, clears the card, and after a few minutes, I have an editing suggestion on my phone. For someone like me who hates video editing, this is fantastic, and without any effort allows to have shareable content with the rest of the family. I'm a bit amazed by the quantity of people saying that a GoPro is not suitable to kids, and suggest alternatives like a gimbal that any kid will break in the first 5 minutes. I think people are talking generally and not by experience with real kids.

I've had every version since the beginning. And I'm not going to say they are perfect; battery life has always been an issue. The odd random crash. The 12 and 13 made decent improvements. But the influencer effect is definitely out there, every video I see from a sponsored influencer is comparing it to a GoPro, and they deliberately set the GoPro up to give its worst performance. you call them out on it and they get all butthurt and defensive, so you know they are full of shit. I own two insta360 x models and a go3 as well, and I can tell you the image quality is no different if you set them up correctly, the battery life on the insta's isn't that great either, and one thing that really bugs me is the time between pressing record and the insta actually doing anything, my gropro is recording and I'm still waiting for the insta to start. And they do crash, and they also overheat. It could be that I'm in Australia, but I've mounted my Insta in my car to record random stupidity and then find it's off and recorded a minute or two before dying. Just Google Insta overheating, and it's an issue they are 100% trying to hide. You mention it as an influencer, and you'll never get a free camera again. And the biggest reason to avoid the Insta cameras is lens damage. The X5 just got a replaceable lens, and they carry on like this is genre-changing. Yeah, welcome to 2020 when GoPro did that. I won't be getting an X5 or AcePro, I will be getting a GoPro 14 as soon as it's announced.

GoPro created the market and were awesome I have had every other version since the original 1080p version ( the very first model was 720p) I usually had 2 at a time Like the 5 and 8 at the same time Then the 8 and 12 For me the biggest issue was battery life and overheating They just couldn’t seem to fix it And I had the Enduro batteries Finally picked up a DJI Action 4 and wow Great quality video No overheating and the battery life is insane Sold both GoPros and picked up the Action 5 Pro when it was released - the low light quality is great on DJI and it was always known as an issue with GoPro They work great I use all my old GoPro accessories but the addition of the magnetic clip on the DJI is next level convenience

I have a hero12black and it seems to work fine for action stuff . i use it for boat stuff and skateboarding. you probably dont need the nicest newest one. i think mine shoots in basic 1080p , 4k , and 5k. I think the 5k (best quality) would be great for baseball stuff if you keep it still. the 5k doesnt look that great when you move the camera around a lot (for example: the camera needs to be still to record detailed video of waves on the beach). but it does do a really great job of smoothing out shakey camera work (especially in lowest quality and 4k.). it has a wide camera angle and doesnt do well with far away shots. its great for up close like if you were near the home plate , but i dont recommend using any gorpro to follow someone running across a field, unless theyre wearing the camera themselves. so dont buy a gopro with the intention of recording anything more than 20 feet away . its more of a first person POV camera

If it’s your first action camera, I typically recommend a regular action camera ( not a 360 camera) Most people will find the editing process and the quality of the 360 camera to be a pain, where as a regular action camera is just easier to use and much higher resolution. If you really need a specific 360 type shot, then maybe it’s worth the effort. I think 360 cameras are good additions if you already have a regular action camera and people seem to like the insta 360 x4. I have the GoPro max and it’s fine but I still use my GoPro 12 way more

I use GoPro 10/12 and insta360 Ace pro 1 for scuba. Both the GoPros over heat at 4k60 at about 45/55 minutes depending on screen ratio I'm using. That's also continuous use. I have an aluminum case that uses exterior battery which helps. But that is still less time then the dive. The insta360 lasts about hour in it's dive case at 4k60. I have had it go as long as 1hr 10m at 4k60 as well. The insta360 acepro is king of the night dives. Especially if your gonna do any UV light shots or do the Turks and Caicos glow worms. The gopros will do good if you oversaturate the dive with bright lights, but then your negatively affecting your videos. Night life will stay away, or you'll blind a aggressive barracuda or turtle, etc... I don't use the insta360 as a primary for lack of attachments. Repeating myself here, but I have the t housing power case. It fits the GoPro plus the digi refuel battery pack and the case goes down to 800 ft (or something like that l, forgot the actual number since I ain't never going that deep anyway). It has magnetic red filters and magnetic macro lense I can easily pop on and off during the dive as needed, and with GoPro labs I can change the settings underwater with QR code plastic cards I made. So let's say I swim across a photogenic whatever on the floor, i can flash card the GoPro for full macro settings, pop off red filter, pop on macro lense, turn on lights and I'm good to go. Then do exact opposite and continue my dive. The ace pro doesn't have all the other bells and whistles yet. It does have its own dice case, and you can the flip filters for it, but those for me have been a pain for various reasons. I should mention the new ace pro 2, has a function where the hard button can be programmed to do any function. Like their zoom, which the GoPro zoom loses resolution the ace pros do not. But I have not used the ace pro 2, one reviewer had an instance of the camera negatively reacting to purple light, which is close to the UV light I use on coral reefs. Which if you never done I highly recommend. Sorry for the wall of text. Cheers

I use GoPro hero 12 with digipack refuel battery inside a t-housing aluminum housing. I have a macro lense magnetic mount that I pop on and off at will when needed. On top of my cradle I have the insta360 Ace pro for lower light footage and a redundancy. Depending on the dive site. I'll use GoPro footage for shorts or clips, or if I'm in a place with a ton of different colors I'll use the 8:7 resolution for full frame shots, and use insta360 for entire dive. I have Ace pro 1, the Ace pro 2 has a feature where the side button is programmable, so a zoom macro is possible and the Ace pro zoom doesn't lose resolution like the gopros do. I however not using the Ace pro 2 since I saw one YouTube video where it struggled with purple light when the pro 1 didn't, it only happened once but that's enough for me to pass since I do UV lights on reef night dives. I was gonna upgrade to full slr setup till I witnessed a dude with a Sony a1 housing flood, pretty sure I heard him crying underwater. So the GoPro/insta360 combo works best for me

GoPro is still the best action cam for fpv because it lets you record in 5.3k 8/7 aspect ratio. When you stabilize fpv footage you crop in this will make you loose resolution. If you want the image with the best quality possible go with gopro. Edit: Dont get the 13 black tho get the 12. The 13 doesnt offer ANY advantages for fpv so its iust a waste of money.

Unless you are super close up and ‘in the action’ a decent smart phone is a better all rounder. Especially if indoors or in low light. I recently got a 12 to take on holiday for the action / underwater shots and it’s amazing at that stuff which it was built for. I’ve used it a few times since then on trips to the park / time warp walks etc and I absolutely love the daily highlight videos that quick creates with minimal effort. GoPro sound is pretty average and unless you’re really close the footage isn’t great either as expected. That being said I have some amazing shots of the kids from holiday that my phone wouldn’t have been able to manage so if you have the option I would take both out and about with you

Going to a hero 12 from a hero 7 was such a huge shock you just won't believe it. Definitely upgrade if you're running anything older than a 10. No idea about the DJI cameras, I've heard good stuff so go with either brand. I can personally vouch for the Hero 12 being a true beast of a camera.

Short selfie stick and GP12 is my jam for most of my shoots in general for my family but I also lock it in a tripod for remote shoots and my basic home studio (green screen and blog). I have a Canon M50 mark II, a GP6, 9, and 12 and unless I need a secondary camera, my M50 stays in the box (and I LOVE the additional Viltrox lens I bought for it too…). Yes you need a lot of light if you want full resolution and correct colors (sunlight is great, but studio you need REAL lights) and no artifacts. Yeah there might be some noise in your video if it isn’t correctly lit and your iso goes through the roof, but for family it’s not the end of the world. Your camera is a capture tool. GP is basically point and click for most things and has advanced smoothing features. The HDR is garbage and requires far too much light for the look. I use it in Log with high bit rate and then apply LUTs and add filters. I’m a video editor nerd though and love all the advanced settings to have control and make it right. Here’s some examples. Test with natural light from a window and with a focus filter while my son eats cereal: https://youtu.be/BLrNVP9jz-0?si=6RmYnQrCGdy0kgXp Playing around in my basement with my son and garbage lighting also with a few filters: https://drive.google.com/file/d/105yWfqbuM3QEupz_OQ_v6qVglTiPD_2G/view?usp=drivesdk My best studio video to date with the 12 for green screen: https://youtu.be/3qUjYXmgeY4?si=S45lRyeIoW5r98lW Good luck on your choice and I hope this helps! I use my GoPro in situations where it may get wet or damaged. Eg while swimming, snowboarding, one wheeling, mountain biking, paddleboarding, etc. Tomorrow my family is going to one of those mud run obstacle coarse things and I will use it there. I like putting the GoPro in a dive case and then I feel confident to give it to a toddler and let them capture funny clips and I know it won’t get broken. The quality of my GoPro 12 is substantially better than my iPhone 14, but you do need to know a bit about settings and post processing to get the most out of it vs a phone which is pretty much point and shoot. Battery life on an action cam will be less than a phone but you can swap batteries. Action cameras can fit into tighter spaces and you can get fun clips that way. They are also wearable so you have your hands free (eg chest or hat mount).

The Mac/Windows software for the Max/Fusion was slow to roll out and buggy. They've been back and forth with other software such as Quik and the GoPro player. What puts GoPro ahead of other similar cameras is the 5k resolution and Labs firmware which allows the cameras to operate at their full capability. That said, despite only being 8-bit my Insta Ace Pro and Insta X3/X4 are fantastic in their respective categories. The Ace blows the GoPro 11/12 out of the water in poor lighting and it records rather large 4:3 HDR video at 60fps while the GoPro is limited to 30fps at 8:7 5k. All these cameras have their uses, the GoPro cameras will overheat far sooner than the Insta cameras but if you need consistent results for colour grading / gamuts then it's far easier to use a GoPro. The GoPro also has GPS (not the H12) while the Insta does not. So it's easier to pull and paint telemetry. GoPro has had the competition edge out some more modern quick connectors that they've now adapted. It's really a case of diversity within the field plus marketing. What sells GoPro is the marketing video. Putting the cameras in places where any action camera would look amazing, applying appropriate colour grading, frame interpolation etc. I'm shocked they didn't have a big video for the Hero 13 showcasing it but rather used smaller videos to demonstrate specific features such as the anamorphic lens, NDs, etc.

I've been using every GoPro since gopro 7 (first release of the hyper smooth) up until 12. With 12 I've used it with the max lens mod. Couple months ago I got the DJI action 5 and I am very happy with it. I haven't used the fov lens for DJI though Features that GoPro is better - * Color quality under good lighting - you just can't beat GoPro with this no matter what. Go Pro looks incredible under good lighting. But with MTB, especially during the summer when all leaves are out, that's not exactly the situation always * Resolution - kinda similar as the first point but it does have 5.2k vs dji 4k. Not sure if that matters much to you * Stabilization - this is very minor but the GoPro stabilization is more natural but osmo Action 5 is still very good * App requirement - for DJI, you have to activate your camera with their app to use it. With go pro, no registration is necessary to use it. To some people that's a deal breaker What I like about DJI - * Battery life - even with GoPro Enduro batteries, I was getting maybe an hour with my settings. DJI battery is literally lasting me 1.5 hr with one single battery. I only carry one extra battery with me now. * D-Log M color / LUT - if you are into grading color this helps a lot. I shoot using their log settings, and apply LUT available online and it is like 90% close to what I want the color to be. * App - I've also used insta360 x3 and insta360 go 3 as well. Out of all apps I used, DJI one was the best one. Its so quick to grab a short footage out and post it on social Media. And you can even apply that color grading through the app directly if recorded with D-Log * Magnet mount - I record vertical videos frequently for short forms. It works great with switching the ratio or even quickly changing settings. Also super easy to put it on like a selfie stick or a tripod * Wind noise - I used to put a little dead cat on GoPro to reduce wind noise. The problem was that I couldn't use GoPro for any under water activity like that. I wasn't gonna keep on peeling it off and put a new one on every time. I wasn't a fan of the big foam around it either. I got the DJI mini mic with it and it pretty much eliminated all wind noise. Its amazing and now I can easily use the camera under water. * Software stability - I used to lose footage all the time because video gets corrupted during the recording and find out when I'm home. So I got into the habit of stopping recording every time I stop on the trail to reduce this corruption. With DJI action, I haven't had any corrupted videos and I just let it record all the time * Filename - it could be minor, but GoPro file name sucks. DJIs file name way more sense * Price - I got the package that comes with the 2 extra battery, battery charger, stick, for like $360. DM me if you have any specific questions

As others said any GoPro from 11-13 (I would even say starting with Gpro 9) would work. I would also recommend the gorpox Max (360) great for something like shark cage where you can re-fesme the video later....just keep in mind 360 is a pia dealing with file sizes and whatever you do don't scratch the lenses

Simple. 5.3k resolution. Allows you to crop in on videos and gives you the highest video quality. Sure Ace Pro 2 has 8k....at 30fps. 8K is just overkill and you won't get any decent looking slow motion out of 30fps. 5.3k is the sweet spot. If you want to do color correcting which the Ace Pro does automatically, you can easily tweak that in editing it's very simple. Until another action camera comes out with 5.3k resolution it's GoPro for me. Then hopefully the next GoPro will have 5.3k 120fps so we can get even higher quality slow motion. If you're shooting underwater get an AOI UWL-O3 lens attachment for it for increased clarity and ability to focus at closer range too.

If your budget is approx. $200, then I would recommend buying a used Hero 8/9/10/11 instead. This will give you WAY more value for your money. Yes, the small Hero camera might be designed for beginners, but I honestly see no sence in it. The Hero Black is not that complicated to handle either, the image quality is better, and it offers way more options.
