Based on 1 year's data from Feb 24, 2026 How it works
I have two Fit50 units - one in the main living space in my house between the living room and kitchen, the other in our bedroom because it’s a large room and our dogs sleep in there with us - and the other four are T500’s, three of which are in my kids bedrooms and the fourth is in the upstairs family room. We live in southern Texas where everyone is allergic to something no matter what time of year, and spring is referred to as “the pollening”. I’ve had generally well-controlled asthma since I was a kid, and allergy tests in 2015 concluded that dog dander was an issue for me. I bought mine when the company wasn’t a name people recognized and they had some great deals on multiple units. Because they’re so reliable, I’d feel entirely comfortable purchasing a refurbished unit, and at the price difference it’s the only way I’d go if I needed another one. The only thing I can’t speak to is their customer service - which is ironically the best reason to invest in them - because I’ve never once had to contact them. I’ve also got four different friends/neighbors nearby who also have pets and allergies and bought them after being in my house, and they all still religiously use theirs. If that’s not enough of a pitch, two of my kids are teen boys and one has had a guinea pig for five years. Between the sour onion funk and guinea pig stank, the only time their rooms smell is when they dare to turn their units off. These things are freaking magical.
Alen. I have 2 different models bought over 7 years ago, one of which runs nearly 24/7 to combat the dander from my German shedder. They both work great. They are expensive and the filters are expensive, but one had a random issue and all we had to do was ship it back to them in the original box and they sent us a brand new one.
Not a Dyson. Seriously. Alen, Coway or winix.
Dyson in general is not known for high quality especially for the price they charge. Also their customer service is shit. The other 3 I listed are much better options. You’ll want as much carbon in the filter as possible. Alen VOC for example.
Longtime allergy sufferer. Alen air purifiers are the gold standard. Choose the BreatheSmart model that is one level ABOVE whatever your room's square footage is, and chose any filter designed for allergens or wildfire smoke. Keep the fan on the thermostat running (with or without A/C) and buy the best filter for your HVAC.
I bought the Alen BreatheSmart 9 years ago for $500 - a big investment. At the time I was desperate for allergy relief and it delivered. It's still going, no regerts.
Not smart but I have two Alens and absolutely love them. I've had an older Breathsmart for 6-7 years and still works great. Recently bought a smaller one for my gym/mancave and it's also great. Won't look for another brand if I needed another one.
I have 6 Alens. 2 x BreatheSmart 75i, 2 x BreatheSmart, a T500, and a Paralda. I like them. They are quiet, the sensors (on the 4 bigger ones) seem to be accurate and ramp up cfm when air quality calls for it. I live in the lightning capital of the world... God's Lightning Rod, FL. I had 2 older ones that got hit and the LEDs went out. It still worked fine, it was just the little LED bulbs that didnt work. They sent me 2 new units with no hassle. The filters are not cheap, but I am happy with how long they last and how they perform. I'd 1000% buy from them again.
I have an Alen BreatheSmart in each big room and an Alen T500 in the smaller rooms. They are basically silent and work amazingly. Plus you can get set up for filter deliveries every 6 months or so.
An affordable and long lasting one is Alen 45i, around 300-400 bucks and they have a lifetime warranty. (if you stay signd up with the filter replacement plan, with one every 9 or 12 months, your choice.) It has black carbon filter material, and is good overall, would be very good for a 300 sq foot area. Levoits are great for lonevity as I've had mine running continuously for 5 years...still going...most other affordable brands will break or have problems but the Levoits last forever. However, they dont have a huge amoount of carbon, only a litlte in some of the filters I think. If you can afford a lot consider the pricey units others are suggesting. I cant afford that and use a combination of levoits + an Alen + RIA Breezeguard (my best unit overall with carbon fiber layer + UVC + humidifier all built in, however it doesn't have a lifetime warranty but so far its been great after a few years. Around 400 I think. The RIA Breezeguard is bigger + pushes more air and has more options (also app/phone control.) But you prob wont need that so much in a small studio apartment. So if you want longevity/lifetime warranty and good effectiveness for the area you have...the Alen 45i is a good choice imo. If you had a bedroom then add a levoit in there for more coverage etc. The only downside to my Alen 45i is that it doesn't super forecefully move air on high, it just kind of goes pretty steady....but it lasts forever and for your small space, if placed in a decent spot where air is flowing...then would still be very good for now + long term. Add in more units once you move to a bigger space. You can also just buy some black carbon filters (for any brand really) and place a few around if you want to capture more odors, esp smoke. So Ria BreatheSmart great all-around unit with excellent features, good carbon, but unsure about longevity Alen 45i seems to meet all your needs with longevity, carbon, size etc. Levoits awesome for longevity as well (not lifetime warranty but they last a long time) but just so-so on carbon I think. (Don't know thier newer/more pricey models as my 2 100 dollars ones have lasted years....) Ofc I like all 3 brands and use all 3 in my bigger space (+ more in bedroom etc.)
I have seen multiple questions around VoC and impact of air purifiers on them. I am writing this post to give some clarity on the same. (My first post regarding AQI monitors was well received:s://www.reddit.com/r/AirQuality/comments/1jo60ue/your\_aqi\_monitors\_are\_probably\_garbage\_and\_here/) (About Me : I am working on AQI sensors and Air purifiers for living.) VoCs or Volatile organic compounds can come from various sources including - floor cleaners, paints, new furniture, smoke, pollution and also farts. The sensor that you are using will differ for each manufacturer in how and which gas it is reacting too. ECo2(Estimated Co2) is also taken into account when they calculate the VoC number. So you as a consumer you cannot really tell when and how it is triggered why your VoC monitors are still high even though you have your Air purifier turns on . Here are some facts: 1. Cheaper air purifiers may just have an Air filter and not true HEPA filter. This is getting rid of particulate matters or PM2.5, 10, and 1. It is not removing VoCs. Even the expensive ones with just Hepa filter will not get rid of VoCs. 2. Your VoC monitor are sensing gases and accumulation of eCo2, which cannot be trapped in the generic Air filters. 3. There are specific filters like activated carbon or zeolite based air purifers that can help in getting rid of VoCs. These filters have Porus material that can absorb and trap VoCs removing them from the air. Photocatalyst based air purifiers can also remove VoCs from air by destroying it. 4. Ioniser based Air purifiers also cannot remove VoCs. It only helps in settling down the particulate matters suspended on the air. It makes these particle heavy and then it settles on the ground. You still have to vacuum it. 5. Other very important point is that the eCo2 weightage in the TVOC calculation is immense. That means even if you have Air purifiers and the place is not ventilated enough, it can trigger TVOC value. Air purifiers and Split are only recirculating the same air. You need to provide good ventilation or your air should recharge/stale air should go out with fresh air coming in. I hope this helps. If you have any questions regarding AQI, feel free to drop in a message in comments section. I will try to answer in my limited knowledge and capacity.
I doubt any air purifier would be silent. Since they have motors, they definitely will have some db levels. The Alen breath smart looks good. Ensure to get it with VOC protector option. you can choose any air purifier as long as it has: - True HEPA filter - Deodorisers- activated carbon or zeolite based filter - good area coverage It has all.
It checks all good boxes - True HEPA filter - activated carbon and zeolite based filter - good room coverage - no jargons and simple to operate This looks really great purifier. Only con I can see is the price - $765 . Since this is made in America, steep price is expected due to higher manufacturing cost.
