I bought the BlueAir 211+ (I think it is, large rectangular thing) because of its energy efficiency and how quiet it is. The pre-filter is easily removed and washed, and it's remained silent at night after a couple of years. Also, it wasn't expensive and it looks somewhat inoffensive. I would far prefer the IKEA style hang-on-the-wall or side table type that wouldn't take up as much space, but I haven't read any actual reviews suggesting they're good.

Air purifiers don't do a whole lot for asthma (^(*the studies I saw were from a couple of years ago, so if new evidence is out, please link it so I can update my knowledge*)), but a good air filter will attract dust mites and cat hair and other stuff. Check your allergy tests to see what it is you're allergic to, and ensure your air filter will capture it. The biggest key to one of these working is air flow. If you run it on 'low', it won't work well at all. If you have gaps/air leaks around windows and doors, it won't work well. If you own your own house, you can install a filtration system tied to your HVAC - that way you can often get good airflow without all the noise of a fan in your bedroom. If not, you're bound by the room air filters. Anyway, I settled on a BlueAir 211+ because of energy efficiency, and while it's annoying to be in the same room when it's at full speed, it's not as bad as some other units. The Winix C545 (I think they were) were noisier and used more electricity.

I had a couple of Winix... uhh... C545, I think the models were, in the house in Texas. They collected a huge amount of dust every month, which is dust that is NOT deposited in the house. I'm not sure it made that much of a difference in the house, given that Texas has a LOT of shit in the air. Now that I'm in a cleaner environment (Seattle), I ended up with a BlueAir 211+ (cheaper HEPA filters, lower energy consumption for something that runs 24/7, and of course, excellent filtration by all tests), and it doesn't clog up as much, but I still notice that I dust the house less when I run it. Also, it's amusing (or terrifying) to see the blue light (good air) turn red (bad air) when I make bacon in the kitchen. I can't tell if the air is better - it doesn't smell different or anything. I just noticed a bit less dust on shelves and tables, etc. That also means less dust in the carpets when I vacuum.

All this is why I ended up with a BlueAir 211+, and so far I haven't been disappointed.

Go to your library and see what Consumer Reports recommends. Years ago, we bought an air purifier off their recommendations (Blueair Blue Pure 211+), and it’s worked well, although a bit noisy (we ended up buying three to put around the home). Replacement 6-month filters are also expensive. I’m sure there are better models out now. Be prepared to spend $$$$, though. Also, anything recommended on social media is likely to be hot garbage.

I have 2, after spending too much time picking them out, love them both. Silent functioning, strong de-smelling (we don’t have a kitchen hood and cook a lot) and visual fit in our rooms were the important considerations. Blue Air Blue Pure 211+ has been working without a hitch for four and half years now. Got it when the smoke from fires was unbearable around here. Love the washable outside fabric filter, and changing the inner (expensive but not often needed) inner filter is a piece of cake. https://www.blueair.com/us/shop/air-purifiers (They don’t seem to make this same model but plenty other choices) https://cowaymega.com/products/airmega-230 has been working beautifully about a year now. Easy to clean prefilter, love the functionality and ability to turn the light indicators off. I don’t get sick any more.

I like BlueAir because they’re quiet and I can buy after market filters in bulk for cheap. Been running a 211 (kitchen/family room) and 411 (bedroom) continuously without turning them off since 2020 and both still operate as new. The air filter taped to the back of a box fan works really well too but is very loud even on the lowest setting. I’ve used this method before I got the BlueAirs when we were dealing with real bad wildfire smoke here in California.

I have an awful dust mite allergy and I got a blueair air purifier and it’s been a literal godsend. It’s gotten rid of what I thought was chronic, skin bleeding eczema that I’ve had since I was a baby. I got it about 3 years ago and it’s still going strong, I specifically got the Blue 211+.

We like Blue Air. Highly rated and reasonably priced. The filters aren't cheap, but there are non-oem available on Amazon for a reasonable price. They last about a year. We have had the big 121 model for at least 7 or 8 years and it is still going strong. Also have a 211+ for about 4 years and a 211 for 5 years. No problems with any of them. Bought daughter Medify. She likes it and uses it constantly because she lives in center city Philly. She has had it a few years with no problems. Lots of good choices.

Stoner here, get a bong or pipe, something that doesnt stay lit as long and always use a smoke buddy. Can get a inline fan + carbon filter and a furnace filter taped to a boxfan. Or get something like a blue air 211 thats a combo hepa+carbon. Or even more optional, find a window and get a window fan to direct exhaust outside and sit right in front to smoke.

Don't get a winix 5500-2. I got 2 of them a few years ago and within months of each other the bearings on both started making a horrible noise. I looked into fixing it myself and it turns out it's very common, and it's nearly impossible to fix because it's a sealed system. They cheaped out on a 10 cent bearing and now they're pretty much useless. My blueair 211+ has been great though. I don't really know how they would be a scam. Just like any filter, they take stuff out of the air.

Of those 4, the BlueAir 211+ is a powerhouse. The Numinoviwhatever is a generic brand that I'd avoid. The white Honeywell is severely undersized for the room. The black one is likely undersized as well. Remember that even the biggest and best purifiers (the BlueAir 211+ cleans more air than anything but a Coway 400 or a Smart Air Blast) really only effectively clean 300-400 square feet on their own, so you will likely need multiple units.

I don't like the fabric design either. I just got a 211, because I need to clean a bigger room and it was the only good deal on craigslist. I can't imagine it being graceful to remove without making a dust cloud. I've also seen some comments that cats can interpret it as a scratching post... I've always had brand loyalty to coway (they lowered the cost of home air purifiers, right when I needed it); the cover keeps the dust contained, and their stack set-up of a prefilter, charcoal, then hepa makes clean-up much easier. I don't think I even need to take it outside. Winix has the same setup. I have one newer coway 150; these are more modern, and I don't like the sliding prefilter -- if you make the mistake of not letting it coast down and it's dirty, the air blows the dust around. Yuck.

i love my blueair. i have two cats, one is as floofy as they come, and it keeps up easily. the outside cover is machine washable and i wash it every time i do laundry. my only complaint is the filters are pricey and they’re often sold out during allergy and wildflower season. you can’t find them on their website or amazon or anywhere. and the generic ones are garbage. i’ve learned to keep a couple extra on hand.
