This is a really helpful response. Yeah I got the 403 Classic on Marketplace for under $100. Could you elaborate on the mesh + magnetic strips solution? This sounds like a great tip and I’d love to know what you did for this setup. Also, where do you buy the filters? What’s the most cost-effective way to buy replacement filters? And what’s the deal with some people saying the Blueair filters smell bad?

Yeah, I’ve never heard of Alen, but you bring up a good point about Winix. I have bad allergies and run most of my purifiers on high 24/7. Considering my Costco model Winix started whining at the motor and producing less airflow, I can’t help but wonder how long my 5500-2 will last. My older Winix, the 5500 (precursor to the 5500-2) seems stronger and possibly like it will last longer. Even though it’s considerably uglier lmao. And the Blueair filter I just picked up comes with a really *thick* HEPA and feels very robust. Honestly, it feels like an older desktop computer console.

Did you ever figure out how to fix the motor whine? My old Costco model Winix also has a whine to the motor, and the airflow seems to have decreased. In contrast, my Winix 5500 (old model) and 5500-2 seem to be doing well, but I’m not sure what their longevity will be like as I’ve only had them for a year. Just got my first Blueair (the model above) second-hand off Marketplace. It’s built much more solidly than the Winix ones but I’m trying to determine if going forward I should still pick up some Winix models or switch to Blueair. I have severe environmental allergies so I have a lot of purifiers.

I have a Blueair classic and also a Levoit 300. My late husband had allergies and when we got the Blueair they were vanquished so we knew it worked. The Levoit is by the litter box and I know it works. 😁 But the filter for the Blueair is pricey!

Blueair’s Mac series are quite nice. Their blue line is good as well, just a little bit louder. They will perform well, overall. Consumer Reports shows the numbers, they speak for themselves. The 211i Max is $250, here in the US. Hitachi was even on their lists and only the Dyson Big+Quiet was ranked, right in the same range as the Blueair at twice the price. You won’t regret a blue air. I have 3, classic, blue and max series.

Our home is 1200 sq ft with two dogs. We have an Alen Breathesmqrt Classic Purifier in the main living space. We have a Blue Air 311+ in the bedroom and another BlueAir Classic in the master bedroom with an air quality monitor built in. You can notice a huge difference in our home, as we can create a clean room when needed during forest fires. We didn’t have these when the worst one came through Oregon. We love them and our allergies are so much better. We change the HEPA filters every 6 months or sooner. Our favorite is the air quality monitor to be sure everything is getting filtered properly.

Made this small flowchart for a friend who kept sneezing through spring but wouldn’t commit to buying an air purifier Step 1: Identify the enemy Is it pollen? Dust? Pet dander? The ghost of springtime past? Yes, yes, and probably yes. Step 2: Must have criteria for air purifier \- can it actually trap allergens? \- won’t sound like a jet engine in baby’s room? \- easy on maintenance? \- doesn’t cost the soul of your firstborn? (ironic but important) Step 3: I went down the rabbit hole Compared Coway vs Levoit vs Dyson vs Honeywell vs one that looked like a spaceship BUT... nothing could compare to [blueair air purifier](https://rantsreviews.com/dp-B073WJL99W) \- Covers big spaces (so your nursery + more = chill) \- HEPASilent tech is real — gets dust, mold, pollen, pet funk, all of it \- Washable pre filter = less guilt about killing the planet \- Doesn’t wheeze like a dying robot at 2am \- Design lowkey slaps too Step 4: Baby sleeps better. You sneeze less. Partner doesn’t threaten to move to the forest. Life improves. You win!!!
