Blueair Blue Pure in the largest size you’re willing to pay. It’s not “HEPA”, it’s not medical grade, it won’t win any 0.3 micron competitive test reviews; however, it’s extremely quiet & effective for smoke & dust running on low 24/7. I have the older 121 model in my living room & my basement running 24/7 on low; they’re quieter than my living room fish tank that’s certainly not loud and quiet enough that it doesn’t detract from my massive basement home theater system when watching movies. I never notice that they’re on unless it’s dead quiet & I specifically listen for them.
Every house has a smell, coming home from travel you will notice your own. During Covid purchased an oversized for my space hepa air cleaner (blue air) with charcoal oder eliminator and since my house has no smell. Zero. Even when I run a scent diffuser it doesn’t smell beyond the room it’s in. I recommend all the cleaning suggestions, this is more long term. Mine runs 24x7 even when gone for a week or more. Some may be uncomfortable with that, but that’s for the insurance subreddit :-).
I live in Southern California, and the filters are great for fire season to keep the air clean inside. They also help when other things are going on outside like skunks, kicked up dust, the neighbors’ smoky fire pits, or even when it’s a bad pollen day. I’ve tried various brands and I still like the Coway AirMega 200M (same as the AP-1512HH). It’s not the quietest at higher speeds, and it’s not tiny, but it moves the air and filters very well. There’s a reason it’s long been the top pick of Wirecutter. If you want some more style, the various BlueAir models, especially the Pure line are very nice and also work well. They’re a bit expensive though. If money is no object, Austin Air makes some highly regarded machines. In general, UV and ozone are gimmicks. The biggest thing to look at are the CADR ratings. Higher numbers are good, they mean the unit is delivering more filtered air quicker. Always check replacement filter prices, often a good deal on a machine means they make money on selling filters.
Blueair works okay. It’s expensive but does work. Coway is definitely more performance for the money though.
I have a giant blue air and I love it. Before we didn't have one in a smaller space and I feel some days I was dying. The cost of the filters is kind of pricy though.
Large Blueair running 24/7/365 for years now. Own 2 large dogs and it definitely makes for an improvement in air quality
We have Blue Air - a large one in the main living area, which catches kitchen/cooking particulate, and a mini one in each kid room. Costco has two packs of the minis for $99 right now!
