"PC fans and Box fans are made by dozens of different brands and can be purchased anywhere - Walmart, Amazon, Home Depot etc. ... HVAC filters are cheap, efficient, and abundant. ... These purifiers do not lock you into one brand and all parts are user replaceable. ... Since the whole system is made from replaceable parts, you won't ever have to throw it all away just because a model got discontinued or a brand went out of business."

"The box fan was $20 and the filters are $40 every couple of months. ... They're inexpensive"

"It's simply several MIRV-13 furnace filters taped to a cheap fan."

"Efficiency - because the filters are more efficient, it requires less energy to pull air through them. ... PC fans use DC motors, which use 1/10 of the energy and are much quieter than AC motors. ... They're also are engineered to be virtually silent. ... To get the same amount of air cleaning power one unit achieved with my winix 5200-2 I'd have to run it at turbo mode and it's just way too loud. Plus the corsi rose thal box built with pc fans pulled 8 watts vs the winix pulling about 60 at turbo. My electricity rates in CA are super expensive and it saves hundreds of dollars a year in energy and filter costs to go with a Corsi Rosenthal box."

"it’s barely audible on high"

"Surprisingly, data shows that Corsi-Rosenthal boxes are just about as good and that's because they can achieve higher CADRs, and a greater number of Air Changes Per Hour. ... The filters do not clog as quickly and can filter large volumes of air quietly which means you will leave them running all day."

OP, I’m copy-pasting this from a previous comment of mine. FYI: Jim Rosenthal developed and provided testing data for what he calls a “mini mini” Corsi -Rosenthal box. He came up with it for his rideshare-driving nephew. I made one for use when I was in a carpool and have purchased those and many other filters from him. Because it uses pc fans w/ USB connections, it can be plugged into your car’s USB port or powered by a basic charger. Here - https://www.texairfilters.com/enjoy-clean-air-while-you-drive-with-the-mini-mini-corsi-rosenthal-box/ ETA: There’s another one he calls the “mini” but it’s sized for a bedroom. Search his “Articles” tab for different versions w/ different fans. Here’s one with pc fans - https://www.texairfilters.com/a-mini-corsi-rosenthal-box-version-2/

A commercial air purifier that meets all your criteria and actually works as effectively as you want it to will be well over $300. Under $300 you only have two realistic options: build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal box with computer fans, or buy a Corsi-Rosenthal kit. A CR box with computer fans is going to be quieter than any commercial air purifier, and the filters will be cheaper because they're standard filters you can buy at any hardware store instead of proprietary filters you can only buy from one company, and by design CR boxes are super easy to maintain. CleanAirKits in the US, NorthBox in Canada, and Nukit in China all sell CR box kits with computer fans. The most BIFL option out of these is Nukit, made with steel, while the others are made with wood or acrylic. I have severe allergies myself and I have two CR boxes, a large one I built myself at home, and a small portable one from CleanAirKits for my office or wherever else I might need it. They've made a big difference in my allergy symptoms. Check out the Nukit Tempest mk 2 when it releases later this year, it is planned to have all the features you listed. The other thing with allergies that often gets overlooked is cleaning. Especially if you have pets you are allergic to, you should dust and vacuum your house two or three times a week. Air purifiers alone won't be enough.

I love my mini Corsi-Rosenthal Box. Helped a lot with my migraines and house full of dust and cats. This video goes into the details of why they might be better than the expensive air filters: [https://youtu.be/gaQTYrisieA?si=UGsgBs1L5CPoNldf](https://youtu.be/gaQTYrisieA?si=UGsgBs1L5CPoNldf)

Replying to this late but the most efficient AND quietest air purifiers are the ones made with PC cooling fans from cleanairkits.com . I have their Exhalaron and it’s barely audible on high

If you're driving a car that you own, then upgrade the cabin air filter to a HEPA filter if you haven't already. Keep the car's fan running as it brings it quite a bit of fresh air. I've seen this ventilation keep the interior's CO2 levels near outdoor air levels or just above even with 2-3 people in the vehicle. Then I've used a Clean Air Kits Exhalaron in the middle of the back seat to mix/filter the air that's farther away from the vents.

As others have mentioned, build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal cube or get a cleanairkit that uses MERV 13 filters. I'm severely allergic to dust and dust mites and I have been astounded at the amount of dust my cube picks up. We even bought a 3d printed frame for ours off of Etsy so it looks a bit nicer than a bunch of air filters with tape. I've had one running in my home continually for 2 years. Equally if not more important: get rid of every shred of carpeting and decorative rugs in your home. I have a small rug under my desk chair to protect my hardwood floor and that is all.

I have several air purifiers and my favourite is a PC fan air purifier from North Box. There are various ones on the market but [North Box is Canadian](https://aidankepo.wixsite.com/northboxsystems). It's available directly from their site or through [Donate A Mask](https://shop.evidencebased.ca/collections/cr-boxes-air-purification). What's nice about PC fan air purifiers is that they're really quiet, quite effective and don't rely on proprietary air filters.

As u/ZedZabeth mentioned, making a Corsi Rosenthal box is a good idea. If you can afford it, a PC fan air purifier uses very little energy, is quiet and takes up less space than a classic CR box. If money is really tight, a respirator mask is probably the easiest, most accessible and cheapest solution. I know the prospect of masking at home is unappealing, but even masking from time to time indoors will lower your exposure.

My air purifier is a [diy one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsi%E2%80%93Rosenthal_Box) out of a box fan and merv 13 filters. So I'm just adding a smart plug to it. You could just get a dumb one with a smart plug? might be cheaper
