100% for smoke, dust and allergies. We use cleanairkits, best performance for the price
Cleanairkits is the most efficient and effective filter I have found
MUCH quieter. Engineer Wong uses very loud industrial fans. CleanAirKits uses premium whisper quiet high-static-pressure PC fans. And the fans themselves get better each year, as the manufacturers know how many are being used for CR Boxes and for silent PC builds, and have been optimizing not only for turbulence vibrations and low frequency sounds, but also high-pitched wines that may manifest themselves only under certain power scenarios. We own four AirFanta 3Pro units and about ten different units of varying models of CleanAirKits - and they’re all great - but they’re optimized for different circumstances. I’d have to say my favorite portable model of CleanAirKits is the Exhalaron, my favorite for home use - especially bedroom - use is the Luggable XXL, and we love the AirFanta for travel and use hotel rooms l, and even in the trunk space of our SUV for use the car.
Is it a bedroom? I would split the budget 50/50 and do a CleanAirKits CR box plus a Levoit or Coway “for mid-size rooms”.
Different sound signatures, so the cumulative noise shouldn’t be perceived as much. Different filter technologies/properties (MERV 13 vs HEPA H12 or H13), so different efficiencies at different particle sizes, though given enough time (air changes) they both would work about the same. It also gives you hands on experience with both so you can decide what to buy after that 😂
Corsi-Rosenthal boxes are what they're called! I have a lot of allergies and I use one of those. They're great.
How handy are you? A Corsi-Rosenthal box is pretty easy to construct out of a box fan and 4-5 filters. Or I've seen ones that use 2 filters and some computer fans that run quieter.
Its ugly as sin and huge, but I made a CR Box and it is the best HEPA I've ever owned. They were invented during COVID to help reduce viral particles in the air but they have proven useful for any kind of indoor air quality improvement like fire smoke, dust, allergies, etc.... [https://engineering.ucdavis.edu/news/science-action-how-build-corsi-rosenthal-box](https://engineering.ucdavis.edu/news/science-action-how-build-corsi-rosenthal-box) Editing to add the other helpful thing (besides replacing furnace filters regularly) has been to increase vacuuming. I got a really great vacuum - a Miele C1 - and I've noticed much less overall dust since I got it and started a regular vacuuming rotation.
Corsi-Rosenthal box. You can make one yourself, or buy the kits. The ones with computer fans are wood or metal and will last forever, and because it uses MERV-13 furnace fans you only have to replace them every few years.
