You also have the option of buying a smart plug and plugging a dumb air purifier into it. If you do, I find that the plugs that work with the “Smartlife” app have more scheduling options. Furnace filters are so much more cost effective than the special proprietary filters used by commercial air purifiers.

Air purifiers based on box fans or PC fans compensate for the lower filter efficiency per pass with more passes per hour. MERV 13 furnace air filters are much more cost effective than HEPA filters. A combination of competition and economies of scale hold down the prices of furnace air filters. Commercial air purifiers use special proprietary filters, which are expensive due to limited production and the manufacturer's monopoly. Worse yet, production of these filters is subject to discontinuation.
