I bought a Coway AP-1008CH about \~3 years ago, definitely smelled bad! I refused to use it and then tried buying a replacement filter 1 year later and it had the same smell. Felt so bad about it I still haven't bought another air purifier. This one was supposed to be so good at 4.6/5 star rating in my country so I got no idea what is supposed to be better.
As dust particles are heavy they can settle to the floor before reaching the filter. That's not to say that filters don't catch dust. Just replaced the pre-filter on one of my machines which was saturated with dust. According to U.S. Consumer Reports (subscription required) where the top rated model got an 85: BlueAir had the best overall ratings of all manufacturers with all models in 1st or 2nd tier, 62 to 81. I have coway flat version and the round Aim version, one for each bedroom. ayou can go ahead with either of them but the flat version is much quieter than the round one and also from my experience cleans up a few minutes faster than the round one. that said both get the job done well and ai have had no issues. I prefer the flat one since it has the removable pre filter to wash and quieter and firs snugly against wall.
Have the IQ air does not catch dust or similar. I ended up buying a.Blue air that does and running both. The air quality that comes out of the IQ air is excellent, but if dust is your issue, is not gonna help. Blue air smells like plastic in comparison.. tried the Conway and there was so much plastic offgassing. I returned it..
The Dyson air purifiers actually work the worst alongside its competition ...look at some smaller studies on YouTube, they did a horrible job not to mention the price difference. Theyre crazy expensive for an inferior product. I use blueair and it does a great job , rates pretty good amongst the others , I think the only other better one was winix or Conway.
I got some Conway ones on sale for a main level and bedroom in my house a while back. My plan was to help alleviate dander, allergens, and fire smoke. I can't say I have any empirical evidence of their efficacy, but I'm glad I have them. If you have a couple hundred bucks and no central air, I think it's worth it.
