[PurpleAir](https://map.purpleair.com/air-quality-standards-us-epa-aqi?opt=%2F1%2Flp%2Fa10%2Fp604800%2FcC0#11.01/47.6101/-122.3557) has pretty comprehensive real-time AQI monitoring, and I'll sometimes cross-reference it against the [AirNow Fire and Smoke Map](https://fire.airnow.gov/#9.72/47.6672/-122.0571). The latter has less sensor data, but it shows you fire, AQI, and can show NOAA smoke plumes if you select it from the gear in the righthand corner. We've got several air purifiers in various sizes, mostly due to wildfire smoke in the fall and pollen in the spring. We've got the [Levoit Vital 100](https://www.amazon.com/LEVOIT-Allergies-Eliminators-Vital-100/dp/B07X25BNBR/ref=ast_sto_dp_puis) in a home office. Great for pollen, just okay for smoke. And then we've got a [Levoit EverestAir](https://www.amazon.com/LEVOIT-Purifiers-Captures-Particles-Allergies/dp/B0B252LDH7/ref=ast_sto_dp_puis?th=1) for the living room. This one got the air from 76% filtered when I turned it on today to 99% in a couple hours. In non-smokey times we can get the whole place smelling like we just moved in. It rules but it's friggin' expensive. Be sure to check door and window seals. Our old place had a huge gap in the front door that let in aaaaaaalll the smoke. In 2017 it was so bad that I struggled to see my desktop monitor through the haze at one point. We took to sealing all the way around it (plus our drafty windows) with painter's tape until the smoke cleared. Basically sealed ourselves in, then undid just enough to leave for store trips or whatever and then we'd re-do it when we returned. If you're sensitive to smoke, an N95 helps. I get really dizzy when the air quality gets bad, and a mask when it hits an AQI of 200 helps me sleep. It's not fun, but better than smoke. If the smoke continues into October, play a John Carpenter soundtrack and stare out the window. Really completes the dismal, spooky vibe. It's our family tradition now. Sorry for the short novel here, but hope it helps! And welcome!

Just be aware of the medify filter costs long term, they soon add up compared to the other brands on the list. For smoke I would choose the 75i or EverestAir both have good amounts of carbon compared to the others.

The Levoit Everest air routinely goes on sale for less than $500 on both their website and Amazon and it’s one of the best air purifiers I have ever used. I prefer the square air purifiers over the round ones.

None of those “high end” are that good even the Dyson. If I had to choose any of the 4 you listed I would choose the Blueair. I have not heard of air purifiers drying out the air nor have I experienced it. I would choose levoit 600s if you have it available. Relatively cheap, covers a large sq ft, cheap filters, excellent performance. Medifyair MA-50, levoit 600s or levoit Everest air, or blueair 211i. It makes a difference as to how much sq ft you are trying to cover. Make sure it’s one purifier per room as purifiers don’t clean air through walls.

Levoit ones are great. Cleaning the air is good for preventing viral spread, too.

Check out the levoit everest air! It’s graded for extra large rooms, so it will be more than enough for your 800 sq ft condo. It has a simple touch screen display that automatically shows the air quality in terms of a percentage (100% being perfectly clean) that is also color coded. I like this feature because I can see how things like cooking, wildfire smoke, vape smoke(!) and other things impact air quality. It’s common for me to not think that the air is particularly dirty only to realize my Everest Air is showing 60% instead of its usual 99%. It also has a turbo mode for when the air is particularly dirty. We actually run the turbo mode all night in our bedroom because it is great white noise. It’s pricey ($450) but well worth it, and you can typically get it $100 off directly from Levoit for $350. I just bought one for my mom’s house and it’s $350 right now. Highly recommend!

Thanks for the great tips! The Airpura C700 DLX does look interesting. My biggest problem with Airpura is a complete void of reviews or testing. Do you have any direct experience with them by chance? I'm leaning heavily IQAir mostly bc there's more reviews and they are mostly positive. I know VOC's are hard and expensive to measure but I'm shocked almost no online reviews even do basic VOC tests using airthings or other sensors. I plan to post my 30 day airthings VOC chart before and after I purchase an air purifier to show some sort of evidence if it does anything. Looking at this chart for my levoit, it's very clear that it's great for PM but useless for VOC's. I would think the internet would be covered in tests like this but there is near zero data out there. This makes me very suspicious that trying to combat VOC's is a hopeless marketing scheme to upsell expensive carbon filters. Any company that showed off real world results would have a huge advantage, but none do which makes me think VOC capture is not practical. I do run a dehumidifier in my room every night and average 37% humidity which helps with the musty smell. Whenever I'm away on vacation and don't run it the smell comes back. Unfortunately can't get the landlord to do anything about it.

I got the small r414 I think is the model. So far I haven't been able to detect any impact on VOCs. In fact I'm currently testing if it's making my VOCs significantly worse or not on my air things. I much prefer my levoit Everest air for PM. For VOCs that does nothing, but as far as I can tell neither does the Airpura. I'm probably going to try an IQAir instead of a bigger Airpura next, you might want to consider that one.

So far it's good. It was easy to set up and use, and the filter is huge. We have a unique air situation and I'm not sure how much it's helping with that, but as an air purifier it seems pretty powerful

You’re going to want two kinds of air purifiers: one for particulate matter (HEPA) and another for VOCs and gases (carbon). Most consumer air purifiers either don’t have any carbon or have just a little as a marketing ploy. Hence the need to buy a real, dedicated carbon purifier. You’ll likely want an air purifier for each frequently-occupied room of the house (one for bedroom, one for living room). I’ve studied this subreddit for months and also done a bit of my own research and have hopped on the phone with a few different air purifier companies to ask about their products. All I can tell you is what purchases I’ve decided to make for my home: a Levoit EverestAir for the living room, a Levoit EverestAir for the bedroom, an AllerAir Smoke Eater for the living room, and a SmarterHEPA Smart Air Blast MKII (with the add-on carbon filter) for upstairs.

If you choose Levoit, I would tend to stick with the Vital 100S, Vital 200S, or the EverestAir purifiers. Let us know your budget and room's length x width x height if you want a more specific recommendation.

So [AHAM recommends](https://ahamverifide.org/ahams-air-filtration-standards/) Clean Air Delivery Rates (CADRs) be a *minimum* of 2/3 your room's area (assuming an 8 ft. high ceiling). However, if you have allergies or higher-than-normal pollution levels I would choose even higher CADRs. First room needs minimum CADRs of 264 CFM. For this, I would recommend the Levoit EverestAir. Another good unit would be the Coway Airmega 400. Second room needs minimum CADRs of 124 CFM. This could be served by the Levoit Vital 200S. Keep in mind that CADRs listed by most purifier brands apply to the highest airflow speed/setting only. Lower settings have lower CADRs, which reduces cleaning effectiveness.

We bought a Levoit EverestAir early in the summer and while the price was higher than we’ve normally spent on air filters it has absolutely made a difference.

We have a Levoit Everest-air by our grey’s cage, and a couple of Coway Airmegas in each bedroom. I would say an air purifier is mandatory for your health if you own a dusty bird like a grey. Always turn off the ionizer (or get one without it A prefilter that is removable for cleaning is super handy. If you keep it washed (or vacuumed) your air filter lasts so much longer. It’s crazy the amount of dust that collects on the prefilters!

I’d yank the Levoit units off this list unless cost is your biggest driver. While the Everest air is a good unit, the core is just not. It will clean air at first but it is cheap and the filter cost will add up over time. The lack of real pre-filters really kills these things. From your list, Medify is excellent. As is Coway 400. IQ Air will filter better than any of these units… but moves a lot less air doing so. I own one and I love it but I fully admit it lacks airflow and is VERY expensive. Alen is also good, you can optionally equip them with extra carbon which is nice. You won’t regret any of these purchases tbh.

We have several LeVoit smart purifiers and they’re outstanding. Our old home is super dusty and these units have made a huge impact on how we feel and no longer see tons of random dust particles in the air.

I have had one Levoit Smart Air Purifier in every room of the house for several years now. I initially bought a few and but was uneasy about the expensive investment I was getting myself into. But I ended up liking them so much I kept getting more and more. I have no regrets even though I’ve spent over $1500 total on them. They make a huge difference (home for a small family + several pets). Actually only regret is I didn’t do this sooner. I’ve suffered from allergies most of my life, to the point that I always walk around 24/7/365 with giant wads of tissues in my pockets. These things make it much more bearable. Pro-tip, you can prolong the filter life by vacuuming the gunk off them. Probably should do it outside as the vacuum tends to agitate some smaller particles in the air.
