The vast majority of fibrous filters like HEPA, EPA, or MERV contain plastics of some kind. That's difficult to avoid. Purifiers with *less* plastic for particulates removal: [Smart Air Blast MKII](https://smartairfilters.com/en/product/blast-commercial-hepa-air-purifier/) and the [Smart Air Blast Mini MKII](https://smartairfilters.com/en/product/blast-mini-ffu/). The housings are steel. The HEPA filters will be made from plastic—polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET). [Austin Air](https://austinairsystems.com/) purifier housings are also metal. I would tend to recommend them for small rooms where you need some particulates removal *and* gases/vapors/odors/VOCs removal. Niche heavyweight sorbent media purifiers have metal housings and metal carbon canisters. These are used to mitigate high or long-term concentrations of gases/vapors/odors/VOCs. Very expensive and very loud. Example brands are [Airpura](https://www.airpura.com/) and [AllerAir](https://allerair.com/). Jaspr's so-called "air scrubber" has a metal housing, but I **wouldn't** recommend it. Dishonest marketing and their purifier is greatly overpriced. I can name two! The AustinAir HEPAs are basically a big metal box with a motor. The plastic in it is the squirrel cage fan itself and maybe the speed dial cover? Same for the SmarterHEPA (outside the US Smart Air) Blast and Blast Mini models. They again are a big metal box with close to zero plastic outside the fan itself. Of course even the motor will have plastic covering the wires or things like that. And the power cord has a plastic coating so nothing these days will be 100% plastic free but these two models are very close. Also both of them are really great HEPA filters! Basically no ‘features’ to either, just a big box with a fan and a speed dial. I had the AustinAir for like 30 years running 24/7.
Thanks for adding the links. I really like our Blast Mini units…which are nothing like mini at about 2 feet square by 1 foot thick! Just a box, fan, and filter. Very little to break or go wrong. No app to get discontinued or sensors to clog.
I recommend [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Qingping-Temperature-Humidity-Upgraded-Function/dp/B0CZ85RT6C/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3F5A48JDTFDTE&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.5KcncewEyArPaKRv_N-DHw.grH0G1BnrdOsgQP1GOPZiDWfuT9CfzC3PGuoyV-6p3Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=smart%2Bair%2Bqingpong%2Bpro&qid=1758783695&sprefix=smart%2Bair%2Bqingppo%2Bpro%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-1&th=1). We have it and it works very well. Whenever we use our (unfortunately gas) stove or oven, the total VOC count goes in the red. We're planning to buy an induction range. In the meantime, our [Smart Blast Mini air purifer ](https://www.smarterhepa.com/products/smart-air-blast-mini?variant=41889323385016)with HEPA and VOC filter works great for getting VOCs and PM2.5 down quickly. It's very powerful. We also utilize our range hood and open windows when weather allows.
Yes, like a Smart Air Mini! [Either way, here is a great list of reviewed purifiers that work against VOCs (farts, among other things)](https://housefresh.com/air-purifier-for-vocs/)
I second the Smart Blast Mini! I have one and it works great. It has a very high CADR (clean air delivery rate) so in a small place with just one living room and 2 bedrooms, all that may be required is one. Unfortunately they raised the price recently due to tariffs, so it's over $700 now, and OP couldn't afford two. I'd go with a Smart Blast Mini for the LR and an SA600 (same brand) for the bedroom. OP, see this [link](https://smartairfilters.com/en/shop/?=header) for the purifiers.
Smart Air Blast Mini MkII The case is metal not plastic, so there's less risk of introducing new chemicals. Very quiet operation. It has an relatively easy to clean prefilter, but for optimum laziness just don't screw the top retaining bracket back on lol I would also *highly* recommend getting a dehumidifier, putting it in the most damp dank room, and setting the dial to 40% humidity. The only way to really deal with mold is to eliminate moisture!
Winix 5510/5520 (whichever is cheaper) for rooms 200 sq/ft or lower, these have ok protection against odor. Winix C909 (it's on sale at Costco until tomorrow) for rooms over 200 sq/ft but this model basically has no odor protection after one big exposure to VOCs so if you're concerned about that I'd check out the Coway Airmega 350 which is about $100-150 more. Your basement is better off with one single unit for that large of a space, more expensive but is a better value for filter replacements every two years instead of one. I'd check out the Smart Air Blast Mini MKII w/ Carbon Filter, its CFM rating is high enough for that much sq/ft.
Smartair Blasted MKII is very quiet with very high CADR due to the size of the filter.
