""NeverChange" with "up to 5 years use" is purely a marketing gimmick. ... I have bought a lot of different air purifiers over the last decade. This one is my favorite for many reasons but mainly because you don’t have to constantly buy new filters. Doesn’t have to be these exactly but something like this. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/shark-neverchange-air-purifier-5-year-filter-life-650-sq-ft-black/6567890.p?skuId=6567890 Or https://www.bestbuy.com/site/shark-neverchange-air-purifier-max-5-year-filter-life-1400-sq-ft-white/6548655.p?skuId=6548655#tabbed-customerreviews

Shark is a rather poor brand. "NeverChange" with "up to 5 years use" is purely a marketing gimmick. [The owner's manual for the HP150 series](https://support.sharkclean.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/13082454422044) states this is "based on 50% CADR declined, 135 sq. ft. cleaning area and 12 hours daily operation on MAX fan speed." [The infographic on the model HP152 product page](https://www.sharkclean.com/products/shark-neverchange-air-purifier-zidHP152) is different, claiming the cleaning area is "300 sq. ft.". Don't know which one is correct. Either way, that's much smaller than the 650 sq. ft. rating. And obviously any mechanical filter's lifespan depends on pollutant concentrations. Yes, many consumer-grade air purifiers have air quality sensors. Nearly all of them are junk as they are cheap and therefore inaccurate. We've had multiple posts about Shark purifiers and their wonky air quality sensors. See: [first post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/comments/xmek6u/new_shark_air_purifier_6_displays_100_air_quality/), [second post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/comments/1fhrglr/shark_air_purifier_stuck_on_0_clean_air_broken/), [third post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/comments/1abxndq/shark_cleansense_always_reading_100/), [fourth post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/comments/1b95ikg/shark_never_change_always_100/), and [so on](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/comments/1hobihz/shark_clean_sense_iq_never_improves_air/). The "Odor Neutralizer" (where included) emits a "fresh scent". This just worsens air quality, as the scent is comprised of VOCs. The standard carbon filters for the Vornado AC350 model will contain next to no activated carbon; it's a plastic base coated with activated carbon powder. Even low to moderate levels of VOCs or other gases will not be adequately removed over time. I doubt the upgrade is significant either. **For particulates, the primary metric should be Clean Air Delivery Rates (CADRs) following the 2/3 of your room's area** [AHAM rule](https://ahamverifide.org/ahams-air-filtration-standards/)**.**

Please read the AutoModerator comment. Air purifiers aren't good at reducing *visible* dust as it's larger and heavier than "invisible" pollutants like PM10 and PM2.5. The same goes for pet hair. Sans is terrible. Shark is mediocre. Avoid both. Coway is generally one of the highest quality consumer-grade brands. Winix is good, more mid-grade. Blueair has an always-on ionizer. Some people want to avoid this because of possible health effects associated with ionizers or changes in gaseous air chemistry. Per the AHAM 2/3 rule, a space 600-800 sq. ft. needs minimum Clean Air Delivery Rates (CADRs) of 400 CFM - 534 CFM. Unfortunately your budget doesn't support a single large or multiple conventional HEPA purifiers. (An example that meets CADRs would be the [Coway Airmega ProX](https://cowaymega.com/products/airmega-prox).) If you still want a conventional HEPA purifier, go with the [Winix C909 at Costco](https://www.costco.com/p/-/winix-c909-4-stage-air-purifier-with-wi-fi-plasmawave-technology/100842491). It's a bit of an energy hog (95 W) and somewhat loud on the highest setting called "Turbo" (60 dBA per the Decibel X Android app), but it's good value for money. The C909 has PlasmaWave, a bipolar ionizer. You may want to keep this off if you have pet birds. Another option may be the [AirFanta 3Pro](https://air-fanta.com/products/airfanta-3pro). It uses Efficient Particulate Air (EPA) E11 filters, which is two filter classes below HEPA H13. Top composite CADR is 413 for the CARB Edition. Price is $159.99. Keep in mind CADRs listed by purifiers apply to the highest airflow speed/setting only. Lower settings have lower CADRs which reduces cleaning effectiveness.

I think I'm parsing your comment here correctly, but... don't buy Shark. It's a lousy brand with very misleading marketing—e.g., "NeverChange" filters. They don't publish Clean Air Delivery Rates (needed to size a purifier for wildfire smoke particulates). It also has a tiny amount of activated carbon so it's useless for VOCs or other gases. We've seen multiple issues with Shark's air quality display malfunctioning on r/AirPurifiers. You need many pounds of activated carbon or other sorbent media for wildfire smoke gases, VOCs, or odors. And even then, plain/non-chemically treated activated carbon doesn't have high removal efficiencies for all gaseous species.

Depends on what your expectations are. The Shark Neverchange is fine as far as purifiers go, people on this sub are obsessed with Coway and Winix so you won’t get many other suggestions outside of that. Air purifiers are essentially a fan with a filter, the neverchange has pre filters to protect the hepa filter. The hepa filter in that machine also has an included “pre filter” wrapped around the actual hepa filter. The filter will undoubtedly last longer than one without or with partial “pre filters”, just maybe not 5 years. For the space you’re looking to cover I’d recommend 2 purifiers or using the neverchange on med-high permanently (avoid auto).

You sound like us when we went shopping for Air Purifiers. It can be overwhelming. We have a single story (2700 sq ft) with 5 humans and 2 large dogs (GSD and Lab). We ended up with Shark Neverchange for kitchen/dining, IQAir for Family/Living Room (2 fireplaces), Blue Air small units for bedrooms, Winix for office, Dyson for Master Bedroom, and Trio for hallway. Got all of them except IQAir from Costco with prices that can’t be beat. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. What are your priorities? Do you want all the bells and whistles like app control? Feel free to share and will try to share our experience :)

I bought the shark never change as my first purifier just recently and I feel the difference with my allergies. The 5 year filter change really attracted me but after reading here a little more I might need to change it more frequently. I also tried the blue air for my office but didn't like it, I didn't feel any difference and it was noisy, I returned it and got the smaller shark never change .

I would say levoit USED to be good in my experience. We have a several year old filter and it’s still going strong with no issues. We’ve since bought 4 or 5 different filters and they have all had the motor burn out in less than a year, most of them in just a few months. We recently went with a shark “never change” and although it sounds super gimmicky, it’s actually working really really well and no motor issues so far but it’s only been a couple of weeks.

Same! Felt my allergies starting to kick up again and for some reason, it's always worse in our bedroom and at night and my shark purifier verified it. But more importantly, since I have had it running, my allergy attack subsided way way faster than it normally does

Just got the shark never change and it's pretty quiet even on its highest setting (like a low fan). It's only on the highest setting when air quality isn't the best. If I keep it running all day and night, it's usually whisper quiet at night since it already cleaned the air during the day

I can't comment on the Levoit. I did recently purchase the shark never change air purifier. It has a HEPA filter and does not produce ozone. I live in a small apartment and it has improved the air quality. The one I purchased purifies 650 sqft., it was $179 on Amazon. I would recommend this air purifier based on my experience.
