People keep recommending 5500-2 but it’s no longer readily available. Winix 5510 is the newer version with app connectivity. 5520 is the same as 5510 but it has a different style front grill. IMHO the 5520 grill seems harder to clean. I recommend the 5510 over smaller air purifiers. It’s night and day difference.
I use the Winix 5510 and I know for a fact I have 1 cat. Works great!
Most stuff I have in that room is dark, so it blends in great. Barely even hear it.
1) I have a Coway 1512HH Mighty and 2 of the Winix 5500s... and they are both really good units for particle filtration for the money. I've also dealt with a lot of customers with both units, through the years, who were quite happy with each of them. 2) Are you Chemically Sensitive? 3) If not, I’d try to get another Coway 1512HH Mighty to see if it offgasses less. It is currently on Amazon at a really good price. I’m new to Reddit, so IDK if I’m able to mention the pricing specifics of units. 4) I am currently not a big fan of Filter Monster replacement filters - I think they are possibly not as good as the filters coming from the actual manufacturers. As, I got one that is supposed to be the exact same filter as the one I have in my Austin Air Healthmate. However, it was about 23% lighter in weight and didn’t seem to be of the same quality… so, I’m not 100% sold on the quality of the Filter Monster brand. 5) The Winix 5500 was recently replaced with the 5510 so, that would probably be the next unit I’d consider, in the same price range. I think the Coway Mighty is sealed a little better than the Winix… but if you can’t use it - you may be happy with the Winix solution…
We used to use a kinda crap/cheap one and it never helped much. We recently invested in the Winix 5510 ($150) and it makes a world of difference, honestly, even overnight. It's a bit pricy but you only have to swap the filter once a year and it has a two year warranty. We checked a lot of reviews before we bought. If you have allergies you should have one!
What the website/product listing says is that it will let you know when the filter needs replaced--it has wifi connectivity and an app. But on a listing for replacement filters, and also in the app, it says typical lifespan is one year. It didn't really qualify that. The Winix 5510 has an "auto" mode where it turns off when it's completely dark and adjusts the fan speed according to the air quality it detects. I imagine the year lifespan is an average when the machine is on auto mode where it doesn't run heavily. I just turn it on and off manually because auto mode spooks me.
I just bought it too lol 🔥
Winix 5510 - after some research I got that as it has the separate filters along with the front washable filter. Plus it’s got the carbon pellets instead of the carbon mesh which makes it more effective. Many of the others have integrated filters so have to replace the entire thing instead of just one which is bad. Apparently the previous model 5500-2 was even better but they discontinued it for the current 5510 which is a bit more noisy as they reduced the size. The new definitely looks better than the older one. It is for $128 currently on Amazon. The videos from this guy for air purifiers did help me make the decision - https://youtu.be/e3X-w9W4lws?si=EIte54rxT_VKO5iB
Carbon filter is not washable. https://preview.redd.it/xh2fadmpda5g1.jpeg?width=1307&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a50a9e0bb818ec6a753fe8d32205b0ce9aad57ef This is their manual for 5510 which says it’s not washable
5510 and 5520 are the same. Just the outside is a bit different. The on in your picture is 5500-2 which is the older model (now discontinued in US at least) for the 5510. Apparently the older model was better than the new 5510.
Just got the winix 5510 on Amazon on deal at 128. Check it out. Pretty great reviews. Have been watching this guy’s reviews to finalize this. In one of his videos he makes a valid point of having a pre filter that can be washed and this one has it. Those round winix models are all in one filter making it toss the entire filter even if the hepa filter part might be good. https://youtu.be/e3X-w9W4lws?si=ZeFZHh9Vqr9CIH9N He prefers the older model 5500-2 over this but that’s now discontinued.
We now have 3 Winix units. Bought a 5520 a couple months ago when it was on sale on Amazon and liked it so much got a c545 and c909 refurbished from Winix direct which just arrived. The 5520 has pellet type carbon filters which I understand last a bit longer than the other types. We use that in the open concept kitchen and it does a great at odors (so far) and filter replacements are inexpensive and lots of 3rd party options very cheap. The c909 I put in the basement where its higher filtration capacity will be handy but it’s more power hungry. The c545 has known bearing failure issues but we plan to run it on low in the kids bedroom area due to allergies. I have been very happy with the auto air detection setting in the 5520 where it automatically cranks up the fan when cooking.
Portable hood by the window for capture. HEPA + big carbon purifier running high during + a few hours after. If money is tight: consider a DIY Corsi–Rosenthal box (for particles) + a smaller carbon purifier or the hood for odors. If money is not as tight and smoke is frequent: consider a smoke-focused purifier with heavy carbon (Winix 5510, Levoit large-room, Oransi TrueCarbon, Austin Air, etc.).
It 100% would. I'd recommend a Winix 5510 or Coway Airmega ap-1512hh.
I'd get a Winix 5510 or Coway Airmega ap-1512hh. 1 in the main living space and 1 in the bedroom.
Winix 5510 and Coway Airmega 1512 is going to be the best bang for your buck.
Coway Airmega 300/400 or 350/450 for larger open spaces. Winix 5510 for bedrooms.
I have Coway and Winix. Definitely prefer my Coway more.
Levoit: 90CFM Winix (smoke/dust/pollen)**:** 232/243/246 So you're definitely getting a much stronger purifier with the Winix. If you're concerned about longevity, you can always go with the 5520/5510 (which is just their new version of the sorta-same machine). However, I don't know what the cost differential would be in England. A closer comparison (in terms of power) would be the "Levoit Vital 200s." Which I don't know why Levoit went with this naming, because it's so confusing. But that model has a CADR of 250 CFM. Again, apologies I don't know the pricing for England. IMO, it's a bit of a toss-up and I don't think you can go wrong. I'd personally prioritize power/CADR over smartphone functionality, mostly because I found auto good enough throughout the day, unless I need to cook dinner. Monitoring is nice, but I just don't see myself doing too much with the data itself. My personal order of importance: 1. Budget 2. Power 3. Reputation / quality of company (will they answer support tickets, warranty, etc.) 4. Aesthetics / Size (does it fit in my apartment and is it not an eye sore) 5. Bells and whistles
