I have a Winix AM90 and just got a Levoit Vital 200S-P. I like the Levoit more, more features, better app and slicker buttons/interface. They both have a filter and fan, they seem roughly the same so far.

The answer is always Winix. Perfectly sale on-time for your budget right now too https://www.winixamerica.com/product/am90

Same pair for me, though I prefer Winix. Definitely a tier above Levoit when it comes to air purifying.

Winix Levoit is not a bad choice overall even if you go with it though. Winix is just better.

The c545 doesn’t have an ESP in it. The guide I followed has you add the ESP. Looks like there are quite a few supported models. Winix C610, AM90, HR1000, C909, T800, 5510, and 9800. https://github.com/iprak/winix https://github.com/mill1000/esphome-winix-c545?tab=readme-ov-file

Most air purifiers should be good; Levoit, Winix (my favorite), and Coway. I will suggest as another cat owner is getting air purifiers that capture the big stuff like cat hair and things that clog up the filter fast. I know WINIX AM90 has the mesh prefilter like they do on air conditioners and you can simply take a vacuum to it. Otherwise the HEPA filter will get clogged so fast with cat hair.

I think my original Winix is 13 years old now. Everything still works even though we have a newer purifier we added for the living room. Very quiet too in medium fan setting.

We have four cats and the filters get clogged fast so you definitely want something that has easy-to-clean mesh like Winix AM90 as an example that you can wash the pre-filter screen you find on air conditioners. Otherwise, HEPA filters and other filters get clogged really fast. You wouldn't think cat hair travels a lot but dust and other debris will clog it up rather quickly so keep that in mind. HEPA for sure will be your priority. If smell is not an issue, you probably don't need the carbon filter and most are just thin ones that don't filter a lot of odor long-term. Winix, Coway, and Levoit are popular brands. I love our Winix. Had them for years but if that one breaks, we'll probably get more modern one with better pre-filter. So much hair/fur😹

Both of my Winix air purifiers started smelling like smoke, they are different models, cleaned weekly and filters changed regularly, I don’t recommend them.

I have the Winix. No issues to date. I don’t use the plasma wave feature.

Definitely recommend Winix. Australian and comes out top of various tests. (If you haven’t been warned- don’t buy Dyson) Super sensitive to more than just particulates and has a ‘pet filter’ that is changed monthly that goes around the main filter and prevents it getting clogged with dust. Helps to prolong its life if you have pets

I say about 1/3rd of my Winix's have a bit of a smell that dissipates quite quickly.

If you're in north america, use the buying guide and grab whatever is cheapest. I recommend going oversizing twice the AHAM/size rating - as purifiers are rated at max speed and most people are unlikely to run it at that speed. I'm partial to Winix (as they tend to be the cheapest both new and open box from Winix/resellers), but anything on the guide will be fine. If you're going for the bedroom, go as big as you can afford - larger fans typically can be run slower and quieter while providing more airflow than a smaller fan. There's more to sound than volume and size, but its a good starting point since sound quality and levels are poorly documented and are difficult to compare across models. Purification is always the last step - vacuuming, good HVAC (good central air filter), and washing sheets/textiles properly is essential. Do not neglect the other steps first; as they're likely to make more profound impacts than the purifier. I have a dust mite allergy, and no amount of purification would ever compensate for regular sheets washing in hot water (and appropriate detergents, ty r/laundry) and clothes washing.
