I have one not used in the garage that was squealing, I plan on taking it apart. One we have in the bedroom started so it’s gonna go. I got 2 years out of it, but I might just return this latest one.

FYI, the C610 doesn’t have the issue where you have to open the app monthly to get the HA integration to work.

I'm confused bc I have a Winix C610 and it doesn't look like the one in the picture. I'm also concerned because the filters were shipped flat, so does that mean it isn't working like they claim it does? https://www.winixamerica.com/product/c610/

I have 3 and I think they work well. One did get the annoying whining noise after a few weeks so I returned it and bought another, so far so good with the replacement.

I have both and like this one better. The C909 is louder on low-high but about the same on turbo. You also can't turn the indicator lights off on the C909.

This one was $100 on sale and is supposedly rated for more Sq ft than the 535. I also have a C909 which is bigger and uses the same filters as yours but I personally prefer the 610.

We use Winix from Costco but turn off the plasma wave. They now have a child lock feature too which is nice. Honestly we rarely have dust in our house and it’s such a noticeable difference when we travel or visit family so I truly think they work so well! They’re around $100 but we have multiple throughout the house. We used to have a larger one but tbh it was much louder than the multiple small ones.

C610. The only thing is that’s a “Costco” model I believe. I think Costco always sells things slightly different than what the manufacturer sells elsewhere (sometimes it means it just comes with an extra filter or one less feature etc) but I’m pretty sure you’ll only find it at Costco with those model numbers!

The C545 appears to be discontinued and this C610 replaces it. Reading the box it seems to have all the same features as the 545. The box says up to 2 years of filtration, not sure if that is with 1 filter or if it simply includes 2 years worth of replacements like the 545 did. This new unit appears to be somewhat copying the shark unit with the cylindrical design which some may find more attractive. It's $129.99 which is the same price as the 545 was, I wonder if it will get the same $99.99 bi-annual sale. I have a couple C545 units still going strong after 3 years and I'm very happy with them.

I don't have experience with the 610 however I can say that these cylinder units use a more traditional fan than the 545 (blade fan vs squirrel cage), and in my experience yes these cylinder units are louder than squirrel cage fans.

Are you sure it was the air purifier raising your bill? I just checked my C545 and even running on high it only uses about 10 watts which adds up to ~$3.65/month running 24/7, and thats at 50 cents per kwh.(California prices) On turbo the C545 uses 47 watts and the tag on the back of the new 610 says 45 watts so probably similar energy usage.

I just bought the Winix C610 for $99 at Costco. I could not find any reviews on this product. I also own 2 Winix 5200 purifiers. This new C610 is also very quiet in "Auto" mode. The 360 filter incorporates the mesh filter, carbon filter (very thin) and the HEPA filter. I'm not sure if they are available yet, but replacement filters for this purifier are listed at costco.com at $80 for a 2-pack. I leave Plasmawave off. I tried out the WiFi feature with the Winix App, and I am disappointed. The App is supposed to allow remote control but doesn't do all the things you can do from the control panel. It also provides a pm2.5 air quality reading in micrograms per cubic meter, but not much guidance on what is a good air quality reading other than displaying a blue light when air quality is good.

I purchased this today with $30 off. My first air purifier. I have been researching as I have IlD lung disease and want to cut down on any air pollution. I do keep my home, basement and furnace clean but I have a little dog- doesn’t shed. When I hooked it all up it reads my air quality is good which surprised me since I cook with gas stove as well. Interesting to me that it will clean down to a micron. Hope it helps my allergies. After researching air purifiers I found that many good ones cost $500 and about $120 to maintain filters each year depending on pollutants. For me if this works for 2 years its totally worth it and the price cannot be beat!

Its shows air quality with the red yellow and blue rings. In the booklet it tells you the details of what the color rings mean. If you use the app to connect and control the machine will tell you what the outdoor air quality is and how your indoor air is in comparison.

My recommendation for price/performance USED to be the Taotronics TT-AP003, but unfortunately, it looks like it was discontinued :( All units with HEPA filters have basically the same filter, so don't overthink it. However, the ONE SPEC that matters is [CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_air_delivery_rate) - this measures how MUCH air it filters. Manufacturers don't like to advertise this unless it's good - likely because their smaller/worse air purifiers wouldn't sell as well! Also note that the advertised CADR is only at the highest (aka *loudest*) fan speed. *For less noise, it's better to get a larger filter and run it at a lower speed - you don't want a little hurricane in your bedroom all night!* Here's some commonly recommended filters (and some from this reddit thread): * The [Levoit Core 300](https://levoit.com/collections/air-purifiers/products/core300-air-purifier) has a CADR of 135 CFM for $99. * The more expensive [Levoit Core 400S](https://levoit.com/products/core-400s-smart-true-hepa-air-purifier) has a CADR of 260 CFM for $219. * The Wirecutter-recommended [Coway Airmega AP-1512HH](https://cowaymega.com/products/mighty-ap-1512hh?) has a CADR of 232+ CFM for $168 (price as of today) - not a bad deal! * The [Winix C909](https://www.costco.com/winix-c909-4-stage-air-purifier-with-wi-fi-%2526-plasmawave-technology.product.100842491.html) has a CADR of 323+ CFM for $199 (Costco online price). Also seems like a good value. * The [Winix C610](https://www.costco.com/winix-c610-4-stage-true-hepa-air-purifier-with-wi-fi-and-additional-filter.product.4000295784.html) has a CADR of 245 for only $129 (Costco online price)! **Probably my recommendation for best price/performance for small/medium rooms.** * The expensive [Dyson HP7](https://www.amazon.com/Dyson-HP07-Purifying-Heater-White/dp/B09LSMRKFD) bladeless heated fan and filter only has a CADR of 80 CFM for $599 (!) You'll notice that filters of similar size have similar CADR. That's because they're essentially a HEPA filter and a fan - it's hard to improve filtration without a larger fan or larger filter. The differences come down to noise level, build quality / customer support, features, and cost of replacement filters. Cheers!

**Edit: There was some confusion, and I realized that I wasn't being clear. So I've amended this SIGNIFICANTLY. Please re-read it if you have already commented.** \- HEPA filters, and HEPA-style filters, rely on tiny micro-fibers which have been blown into the filter in a specific configuration that, although random, has fibers pointing in a specific direction to trap particulate matter. Any deformation of the filter reduces the number of micro-fibers pointing in the correct direction and/or aligns the fibers. If they are not randomly aligned, and if they are not pointing in the same general direction, they don't trap stuff. End of story. Round purifiers, almost without exception, have flat-packed filters that can be bent/flexed and are shipped all smooshed-up. These filters are ASSUREDLY not HEPA grade. While they do clean well, it is because their fans spin faster (and thus fail sooner). **HOWEVER, the pictured unit from Winix is an exception to this. There are also units from Air Doctor that are an exception. All a manufacturer has to do is reinforce the filter with rubber or metal or plastic. Most do not. And also note that the unit pictured has $50 filters and costs $200 - both more expensive than the 5500-2, the rectangular unit it "replaces".** \- Additionally, the fans in these round units are smaller, as is the filter media area. Almost without exception (Blueair has filters that are the entire surface of the unit, and are one of the exceptions here). Small fans + small filters means the fans are noisy and run faster. They burn out sooner and don't filter as well over the long run. **Again, this is not universally true, nor is it mandatory! Most manufacturers are looking to save money here.** \- Small filters means they clog quickly yet they are still billed as replaceable every 6 months. In reality 90 days is more than you'll get out of most of them. They also almost never come with pre-filters so the main filters clog and become useless very fast. When they do come with pre-filters, they are not removable and therefore cannot be cleaned effectively. \- Most of these units don't have much carbon. Some have a LITTLE. The expensive ones (like Austin or Airpura) have a LOT, but they're also $750-$1000. Levoit has added a little carbon to their filter in response to consumer demand, but it's so little that it hardly matters. \- Lastly, most of these units look EXACTLY the same inside, as do their filters. Even the good brands such as Coway and Bosch seem to be using the same crappy filters as the Levoit and made-for-Amazon Direct-to-landfill brands like AEOFLASUD and LOSKDYWE. The housings are the same, the filters are the same... they're definitely all made in the same factory in China, and while "made in China" doesn't HAVE to mean "low quality", in this case it absolutely does mean that. In general, MOST of these purifiers are inferior in almost every way to their rectangular counterparts. They are very popular because they LOOK newer, and because they can be advertised as "360 degree" and are MUCH cheaper to make, but NOT cheaper to own. When they are cheaper, it's a loss leader. Consider that if you replace the filter 1x a year in a Winix 5500-2, your costs at the end of year 1 are: * Unit: $150 * Filter: $50 * Total: $200 If you get one of the $100 round units, but have to replace the filter every 3 months (common) for $30, you spend: * Unit: $100 * Filters: $120 * Total: $220 So there's no benefit there. **Now, the unit pictured is a Winix C610.** It costs $200, and filters are $50. It has near-identical CADR to the 5500-2, which is similarly priced. It claims a one-year filter life, which may very well be true since it has a reinforced filter which is not flat-packed. But in order to achieve that longevity, you have to clean the pre-filter, which is neither removable nor washable, so cleaning it is tricky (remember, you cannot vacuum a HEPA filter). But assuming you do, you get a unit with the same specs as a 5500-2, for the same money as a 5500-2, with worse filters, little or no carbon, and no washable pre-filter. Again, it's not a winner - and this is quite literally the nicest one of these round budget units I've seen. **SO IN CONCLUSION:** IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A GOOD ROUND UNIT. But most manufacturers have chosen not to.

UncleGurm • 7 months ago

I’m saying I question the filter longevity. The C610 is one of the better units, it has a rubber reinforced filter that won’t deform and might actually therefore be HEPA verified. However, like most other round units, it has a pre filter attached to the main filter which is hard to clean. I have my doubts this filter will last a year without any removable pre-filtration. As for coverage I have no reason to doubt that any more than I doubt any other unit's square footage claims. However, there are NO units on the market that really clean more than a couple hundred square feet very well, 300 is pushing it. That said, inflated coverage claims are common in the industry. Bear in mind also that this unit is the same cost as the 5500-2, and its filters are equally expensive. Even if they last a year, you’ve saved no money and have worse filtration.

Ugh really? I’m disappointed. The pictures on winix’ website show a nice reinforced filter … listen, I’m sure it works fine. Just be aware that the filter isn’t going to really last a year and you need to keep it clean. Wipe it down regularly to get the dust off.

it’s been about a year and a half since installing a Winix in every bedroom and living room of my home. I should mention that we have hardwood floors throughout the rooms and every room is vacuumed daily if not every other day. Bought 2 to test out when they were on sale and noticed my husband coughing less and his allergies inside were improving. Put one in the main bedroom and the other in the living room and after about 2 or more weeks on Auto Mode (it’s on 24/7 and adjusts is filtration strength as needed) I peeked in and noticed that it was actually physically working. The actual filters are said to last a whole year and the dust cover/collector that goes over the 2 filters was sucking up and collecting the dust and dog hairs. The easy access to the filters makes it easy to vacuum and maintain. So we decided to put one in every room with absolutely no regret. Not sure how the others perform. I purchased during allergy season and Winix was highly recommended talked about a lot on this sub at the time. We really love the WiFi connectivity and the easy to use phone app that allows us to remotely control the devices when away as well as synch it to work with our Google home devices.

I love my Winix! Ended up buying one before Costco had them as they were much cheaper than most brands, but actually had really good specs and certifications from everywhere, while also having a large AHAM verification for their square footage. I think I will be buying the Costco one soon for our spare bedroom though! Also if you need a larger size, they have a bigger unit available on Costco's website.

Don't fear monger, Winix even passes California's extremely strict Ozone requirements. Also to the person below this comment, most UV light actually also creates Ozone, and is also not very effective in helping clean the air at all. At best UV light only kills the bacteria on the filter, provided it's actually exposed.

I’ve been using my Winix with Plasmawave since 2019 without issue, and that includes moving about once per year. These units have held up to that. I can tell you they really work. I have a mold allergy, and mold is literally everywhere in outdoor or indoor air with spores just waiting to land in a suitable environment for growth, but I have no symptoms at home with my two small Winix. I also have pets. These reduce any odors from that, and they are at what one might consider end of life for a typical air filter system. 5 years is typical. 10 is incredible. I am not washing the pre-filter nearly as often as I should and am slow to replace the carbon and HEPA filters sometimes, so 5+ is just astounding in my case.

You want a HEPA filter and actual activated carbon granules-sometimes the activated carbon is just a paper thin layer-not doing much. For cost, consider replacement filter costs not just up front ones. I also like ones that have a sensor so you can leave it on “auto” and it will kick on when you cook or air gets worse without you having to keep track of it. Also don’t splurge on plasma ion or ozone or whatever else-mixed studies show it can react with chemicals to form more dangerous ones at worst and generally not much better at best. Right now you may want to sacrifice optimality for actually having something going to clean your air since it’s a time of high uncertainty. What’s in stock at home depot may be superior to the “best” air purifier that arrives in 2 weeks. Those caveats-no one can give better advice based on “feel” than what’s tests show-and wirecutter actually tested performance https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-air-purifier/ . If you prefer anecdotes, here are some of my experiences: Winnix has been in stock at home depot. I evacuated with my air purifier and I needed something to leave during cleaning to try and detox my pasadena apartment. It was in stock and had hepa+carbon-it seems to be working. Oransi is the one I evacuated with, love the looks, it really seems to work well, lots of aftermarket filters available-downside is that sleep mode sets fan speed to auto, I want it to just turn lights off and leave the fan mode. But It has lasted at least 6+ years. Levoit is what was at the apartment I evacuated to. It seems a little less powerful per dollar spent than my oransi, but it’s night mode turns off the lights while still letting you set the fan speed. My roommate left a Coway going in his room and that thing worked very well to prevent any smoke smell from settling, and it’s highly recommended by wirecutter. If I had to buy right now and I could get one in a reasonable timeline, it’s how I would go.

Any filter with a charcoal filter layer will help some (Winix is one brand commonly available at Costco…I also have a more elaborate Rowenta)…my Winix came with multiple charcoal layer replacements. Dealing with total incontinence here, and not to criticize your MILs efforts, but you might want to look into the actual sources of the odors. Chairs, clothes that sit around waiting for wash, previously soaked furniture or carpet? If bedding or fabric furniture smells and you can replace it, do so. I use a combo of Depends on my father, and all his sleeping or seating surfaces have a first layer of puppy pee pads (Costco has large ones that work well and are cheap), and then a fabric layer on top (whether sheets or a chair cover or towel, tucked into the sides of the chair). Once he’s wet, after I changes his pants all clothes and chair covers and bedding goes in the wash (3-5 loads a day).  For the mattress you can find on Amazon washable mattress covers (the whole bed ones don’t work that well but that’s my base layer and then a thicker more absorbent one that I fit across the middle section of his bed, and on top of that layered dog pee pads).  So again, not sure if any of this advice helps but this method works for me.
