We have the cybex orfeo and it functions well as a travel pram, always managed to get on plane and one click open. The clasp sometimes get a bit stuck for few secs after 2 years of frequent use, id say it lasted v well that long. We still use it weekly and on our travels. If i can have any pram, i would get Joolz or Bugaboo butterfly as they are sturdy and very good and also have good storage space, but quite pricey. Yoyo is small and well known and easy to get a good 2nd hand, however its not one hand open and doesnt sit up right so our baby hated it when we tried in John Lewis.
My daughter abandoned pushchairs before she was 3, which is a bit early but as she and her friends are all turning 4 I never see any of them in pushchairs anymore. My youngest is 16 months and we still keep the travel system (cybex balios s lux) in the house and use that if we are walking anywhere. I ended up getting a compact travel pushchair (cybex orfeo) when he was about 6 months - that lives in my car so I just use that for any other purpose.
Travel stroller is a must. For example cybex orfeo, folded into an over the shoulder carryon bag. Do not let them take away your stroller at plane entrance, fight them to the death for it! Hang a jacket over the bag so it looks like a regular carryon bag, it's small enough. They took our stroller at plane door, and then put it on baggage carousel instead of returning it at plane exit. Baggage was after passport control. So we spent 1 hour queueing in passport queue with a 3 yo and a 12 month old. The 12 month old was hanging in a carrier and didn't make a peep. The 3 yo decided to hold a battle Royale and spent 1 hour of passport queue just shrieking at the top of his lungs and pulling trying to get away from us. He pulled for the full hour so bad, he gave himself a nurse maid's elbow. Never again. If we had our stroller, we could have strapped him in to contain him. I will fight to the death for my stroller next time. Also stroller is a must have on location because one or the other kid can take a nap in it on the go. Heat makes them drowsy really fast. Plus like I said, sometimes you need to contain them
We have the Cybex Orfeo. It folds down small enough to be considered hand luggage. However, we noticed when flying to Fukuoka over year end that while they (Peach) don't count it as a piece of luggage, its weight counts towards our per person total. The total being 7 kilos, with the Orfeo weighing just under. I doubt any person would take nothing but a stroller on a flight, but we had to check it in anyway.
I went and tried a Silver Cross Nia in store yesterday and decided to order it (Chocolate color) over the Aer 2 and Butterfly 2. Our baby is 8 months old, London living. Initial impressions - smooth ride, quality materials, nice seat, quick fold, huge basket, easy to recline where needed, lightweight, airline approved Fyi we had a Joolz Hub2 that failed twice in 8 months (once the folding mechanism, once the wheels - both times replaced) plus it was heavy for 1st floor flat so we decided to switch from it to smth lighter. Also we liked the accessories bundle for Silvercross Nia, will buy that also. Note: also have a Cybex Orfeo bought as emergency which is super light and smooth but wanted something higher quality (and we weren't fans of the seat). Keen to get your thoughts on Nia when you get it 😁
We went with Uppa baby vista v2 complete system as our primary stroller and stokke YoYo as travel stroller. In the process I had multiple trial & errors, exchanging etc to find what meets our needs. My learnings: 1. Don’t buy stroller too early, you want to be within exchange window once baby arrives and you use it on baby only to realize it’s not what you want. Pre-baby moms like me choose light weight medium stroller but the moment baby’s here, your feelings can change. You may want the sturdiest and comfiest one for baby over your own comfort. Happened with me so switched from nuna to UP vista v2 2. Terrains in your neighborhood and lifestyle are big consideration factor. If you hike, go on trails or plan to take stroller on uneven surfaces then heavy built stroller. 3. Safety considerations: Some stroller seats are harder shell while others are thick cloth with padding. I can’t imagine someone hitting stroller with vehicle but I once had a child lose control of bicycle and hit the stroller from side. LO didn’t feel anything other than a bump thanks to the hard shell of our seat. 4. Bassinet: Depends on your need, if you plan to be out walking the first 3 months more than an hour at a stretch then bassinet becomes useful. I was able to lead my usual pre baby lifestyle with frequent outdoor time because of bassinet. If you plan to mostly rest and recover with less outdoor trips then car seat attachment works. It does take space in trunk. 5. Baby’s size: If you have a heavy baby (not just chubby but actual 90 percentile above one) the light weight strollers aren’t useful for longer period. Example: I tried cybex & doona as travel alternative but both failed. Cybex travel stroller was so flimsy and would seem like it will break if baby tried to fight the stroller. Doona though it says 12-18 months, I borrowed for an international travel from a friend who has 12 months baby. My 9 month wasn’t fitting as he was big and it felt his shoulders were getting stuck. Travel strollers are best bought only once baby is here and the neck stabilizes.
Stroller/car seat combos tend to be pretty low when on stroller mode. Like u/diatho said, get a travel system. Our first one, my wife splurged on a Nuna and the stroller extends to accommodate taller peeps. Fabric was superb and easy to grab and go. The carseat uses an adapter for the stroller but is just one piece. It is very expensive though. With our second one, we ended up getting the cheapest Cybex system and it works out well. Only thing I don’t like is the you have two adapters for carseat and another two for the bassinet. It can somewhat accommodate tall peeps since the handle swivels in varying degrees. I heard good things about Graco and Chicco as well but my wife hated the texture of their fabric. And since they’re roughly the same price as the cheapest Cybex, we just went that route instead.
