I have owned 7 strollers and one stroller wagon, but not all at the same time. My sweet spot for strollers with one kiddo was a farm stroller and a BabyJogger City Versa GT that I picked up on marketplace. My happy place for strollers with 2 under 2 was one all-terrain single-to-double stroller (Phil & Ted’s Sport) and a compact single seat stroller (BabyJogger City Tour Luxe). I added a side-by-side BabyJogger City Mini GT Double later. Now that I have 3 kids, I’ve sold most of my stroller collection in favour of a four-seater stroller wagon, but kept the City Tour Luxe. Fb marketplace is a huge enabler for my stroller problem lol I’ve only purchased two things brand new and everything else is bought and sold on marketplace.
To be fair, “travel stroller” is kind of a misconception as well, as it really depends on what you expect out of a compact stroller. The stroller that fits in the overhead bin is really only going to handle indoors and paved terrain, whereas a compact city stroller will deal with a bit more. I live rural; we have gravel streets and no sidewalks in our village, and my parents are on a farm with pasture trails. I have a compact city stroller that we would use for travel, and I also had a Phil & Ted’s Sport with second seat and a Baby Jogger City Mini GT Double. I sold the doubles in favour of a Larktale Caravan Quad. I only buy main strollers that will cope with going for a walk at my parents place and get me to and from the local playground by the mailboxes. I also realized by the time my second kiddo was 6 months old that our terrain capable double stroller was not a great travel stroller (we needed to travel with two playpens and struggled to fit the stroller in the vehicle at the same time, and it folded in too many pieces to be easy to deal with at the airport) and we needed something for road trips to the city. If you’re actually going to run with a stroller, you should get a stroller specifically engineered to do that. You will have a way better running experience if you’re not fighting your stroller the whole time. Also accept that the running stroller will not fit well in the vehicle and will not be ideal for travel.
The stroller use will last a lot longer than the infant carseat use. Prioritize a stroller that will work for your needs over a compatible travel system that meets your criteria. There is ALWAYS babywearing rather than stroller. I have a friend with a Graco Modes travel system and I absolutely hate the stroller. It rattles SO MUCH and steering is stiff and clunky. BabyJogger City Mini GT bare minimum. We live in a rural village with gravel streets and no sidewalks, so we are no stranger to rougher terrain. My family is also on the farm and we walk the dogs in the pastures sometimes. The City Mini GT can manage the gravel and pastures ok, but there are definitely better options. You can get adapters to click many carseat options into it. BabyJogger City Elite. The bigger, beefier sibling of the City Mini GT. Handles better on gravel for sure. Phil & Ted’s Sport. I had this for the double stroller option and loved it so much. Has the option of carseat adapters and a bassinet. Bumbleride is another great option to consider, and Mountain Buggy.
I have three giant kiddos. My almost-4yo is 45 lbs and wearing girls size medium, my almost-3yo is 45 lbs and wearing girls size XS and some 5T, and my 1yo is over 30 lbs and going into 3T. My oldest was just starting to find the seat of our BabyJogger City Mini GT Double to be too small; the canopy was touching her head sometimes. I sold our Phil & Ted’s Sport with second seat because my second kiddo had maxed it out for weight capacity already so I couldn’t use it as a double stroller. I upgraded to a Larktale Caravan Quad and LOVE it. My oldest still has room to grow, the seats recline for naps, and everyone has enough leg room.
I had a Phil & Ted’s Sport (same company as Mountain Buggy) for 2 under 2 in rural Saskatchewan. It does not have a parent-facing mode (unless you are using the second seat on the upper adapters and don’t have a child in the main seat) and honestly I did not find that I missed it. There’s lots of ways to peek in at baby.
Ours isn't side by side, but we have the Phil and teds sport modular. And it's by far the best pushchair I've ever owned. Because it's not "designer" you're not paying for the name you're still paying for the quality but for a fraction of the price and I think that makes such a difference. Our kids are 2 and 4 months now and I can put the modular seat above or below the main seat depending if my toddler is walking or at nursery.. it's off road so can be pushed on all terrains with ease, plus it's compatible so fits into a smaller boot.. It was between this and a bugaboo donkey, problem I read with the donkey is they don't always fit through doors so it put me off
Every time I see one of these.. 19 month age gap.... Don't skip. I thought i could skip, had a very stressful 2 weeks after coming home with new baby waiting for payday to buy a new double stroller :S Get a modular one, one that can be taken apart and used as a singular (we have the Phil and ted sports double, and I love it so much)
From one mum who thought we didn't to another.... absolutely yes you need one. Similar age gap between the two, our eldest is a keen walker.. but he absolutely needed a pushchair to get through the longer stretches and it made nipping to the shop infinitely easier. We've gone for the Phil and teds sports double pushchair. The 2nd seat attaches either up above the main seat or under it in the basket area of the pushchair.. Our newborn is in the bottom and toddler on top, it's off-road and such a dream to push. And because it's not a "desirable designer pushchair" it's actually so cheap to buy second hand in really good condition We made it 3 weeks before we bought a double pushchair, and it was 3 weeks too long in my opinion I love to baby wear. We wear her at the supermarket.. but it makes it so difficult to tend to the toddler and move about fluidly. There's times too that I've baby worn and my toddler has had a full on meltdown and I've had to sort of scoop him up awkwardly from the middle of the road (as he'd just drop to the floor while holding my hand), then I have to carry him to a safe place and then proceed with how we deal with tantrums.. while my story isn't wild because we live in a gated community, it's besides the point because it's still a road you know? With a pushchair, I just keep walking haha.. Look at what's 2nd hand in your area, look in areas close to you too.. but that Phil and ted pushchair is the greatest stroller I've ever had and I've been a parent for 10 years now and had my fair share of pushchairs.
Phil and Teds do very good running pushchairs. Compact, robust (used on grass/trail) and speedy while being a smooth ride. Got ours 2nd hand and still going strong 3 years later.
The Phil & Teds Duo Sport is decent for everyday use, but for actual jogging it can feel a bit heavy and less stable at pace. If you’re planning to run regularly, models like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or Out’n’About Nipper Double are much better for jogging – smoother ride, easier to steer, and lighter to push. Both also fold reasonably compactly. Since you’ll sometimes run with just the baby, check that the pram handles well with uneven weight distribution. Also worth measuring your boot space before buying – some doubles are long when folded.
I think this really depends on how you are going to use it. Ideally a good travel system will work for most people (stroller that comes with/attaches to car seat and/or bassinet). Are you mainly going to be using it indoors? On flat, nicely paved streets? Or for long walks? Treks across the city with a variety of terrain? Jogging? Is this something you want to fly with? Or something that will be often in and out of your car? Depending on your answers I would recommend different things. As a city-dweller, I don't mind having a heavier stroller if it means I get good shock absorption and bigger, air filled, tires. My side walks are unpredictable and I really wanted an "all terrain" stroller as I walk everywhere from the park to the grocery store. My stroller will have little to no time in my car, and zero time on an airplane. A bassinet attachment is also really important to me, as I don't want the newborn to have to use a car seat, when I don't even plan to be in my car. I also recommend getting things secondhand. Facebook marketplace is a great resource for all baby items. I currently have an almost 4 year old, and am due with this baby in September. With my first, and not knowing anything about strollers, I worked through three phases of strollers. 1-Infant travel system (Chicco Keyfit/Bravo), 2- All terrain stroller (Phil and Teds Sport, bought secondhand for almost nothing) 3-[Wagon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09V2D4FF1?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1) \- We got this when my daughter was 2 and it became the only thing we used. Even if she doesn't ride in it, we can easily pack her stuff in it. The adjustable handle/handle options make it so she can push it around too. This is sooooo nice for the zoo. Also was great in the airport, but it is heavy. But it does fold up really easily and doesn't take up much space in our basement. If I could start all over and money were no object, I would have skipped the travel system and would probably get the Bumbleride Era, with the bassinet attachment, and a buggy board attachment for my daughter. I would still do the wagon too, eventually, but there are so many new options now I don't know if I would get something different.
The used GT I got came with car seat adaptors but we didn't use an infant seat, just went straight to the convertible (we're in Florida so no weather concerns). But I do know the stroller isn't probably the most ideal for infants unless you can get the bassinet, there's no parent-facing option with the regular seat which was so important to me in the first year of life. But we also were mostly using baby carriers in the first year anyway. I started with a Phil&Ted's sport which is similar to the Baby Jogger City Mini GT in a lot of ways, but the fold and compactness of the GT has outweighted for me the additional features of the P&T's Sport. The Sport can easily convert to a double (but number 2 has taken longer than we planned to happen) and it also does parent facing, but the fold is not as easy and it's a bigger stroller and not as nice to push.
I have had two prams, out of my two I preferred the older 3 wheel phill and Ted’s pram with the second seat attachment. However I look after my friend’s child a bit and she has a mountain buggy, it must be about 9yrs old now, on its third kid and is fantastic. She has put bigger tyres on it which makes it sit higher which is great if you’re taller. I now wish I had brought a 3 wheel mountain buggy stroller when I had my first child.
I had a Bob when I had one kiddo. Got a Phil and Ted double when I had my second
I have a Phil and teds and a mountain buggy duet! I keep the Phil and teds in the car for quick outings, and like if I only need a single it’s a single. The bottom seat is small but fine for a toddler to hop in/out or I stick the baby down there! Sometimes I flip it and have the baby lie flat to sleep and put the extra seat on top. I prefer the duet for big trips, it pushes like a dream, I use it around town. (I’m a Brit but in the US. I got my mum to bring me the Phil and teds as they don’t sell them here😂) both are second hand because we have so. Many. Buggies
Good to know. We already bought a second hand Phil&Teds when we just had the one as we live in a rural area and needed a pushchair that would go over rough terrain (and I love it for this). It came with the doubles kit and cone April I’ll have a 19 month age gap. My toddler is very average sized though so hopefully he’ll fit! For nursery runs and travel we have 2x BabyZen YoYos so I was planning on getting some connectors to make them a double.
