Nemo makes excellent tents. I have the hornet elite 1p and the hornet regular 1p and the dragonfly 2p for when my husband and I go together. I love them all. They do have some cheaper tents that aren’t as light (ours are all 3 backpacking tents). I’d highly recommend Nemo, but like someone else said, there’s lots of good tents that aren’t super expensive. Our car camping tents are all Alps Mountaineering. We also LOVE them. Their 4 season tent is our fav and we have had it for many years and also recommend it too! It’s really reasonably priced for a 4 season. We camp the most in the Tetons and Yellowstone as we live near the parks and the 4 season is nice for that. I’d also recommend looking on www.steepandcheap.com for tents. They have great prices and it’s powered by backcountry so it’s legit.
Great company. I've had a 4 season tent by them for almost a decade now. That thing is indestructible and has handled crazy amounts of snow and storms.
I've had an ALPS Mountaineering 2 person for years. Its been a great tent for me. Less than $140 at the time.
For shelter/ tent… I will give you a pro tip…. Start with a 2man tent… I really like the Alps brand for entry level tents and here is why. We use them in Boy Scout troops where the kids are tough on gear…. They stand up…. You can get them off Amazon for the best prices and there is a huge selection…. They also back up their gear if something breaks- if the tents gets wet - set it up at home to air it out dry….
I like the Alps tents. Wife and I moto camp off our KTM’s and the two person has aluminum poles (fiberglass poles break) and two vestibule for our Mosko luggage and riding gear. It keeps it all dry but out of the tent. I use a stuff sack to pack it small.
I picked up one of their two-person tents a couple years ago for almost the same reasons, couldn’t find anything in my price range that balanced weight and quality as well. I’ve taken it out in some nasty rain and it held up super well, no leaks or issues. Plus, setup is straightforward even after a long day on the trail.
