"I’m 6’4 240 and I use the 3 man for backpacking with 1 other person and a dog and it’s great."
"The extra space will mean so much as you move through various conditions and needs. ... The extra space allows you to bring all or most of your gear inside, with an area for boots/shoes etc."
"I’m 6’2” and I fit"

"The tent is very well constructed and quite robust, with high-end materials. ... Construction quality has been much better than expected"
"I have and it managed pouring rain and high winds without issue."
"I’ve had that thing all over the most remote parts of the Colorado Rockies and it has always performed perfectly."

"Copper Spur is perfect though I have also used a 20+ pound REI Kingdome when space was less of an issue. ... I do a fair amount of trips that start with a flight so a lighter tent that takes up less room is a must."
"it's about 4lbs so my husband and I split the weight."
"It is as light as they come for a two person backpack tent."

"ease of setup... was worth every penny."
"A freestanding tent is a bit easier if you aren’t used to trekking pole tents. ... My first outing with my xmid was on hard packed ground in the desert where it was really difficult to get stakes in the ground. The tent blew over during a thunderstorm that evening. If I were going on the same trip again I’d probably just take the copper spur."

"Big Agnes Copper Spur is a pound lighter, just not as sturdy."

"My tents are UL backpacking (Durston XDome and BA Copper). The BA wets out too easily ... It’s the floor that starts to wet out- it doesn’t become completely wet, but if there’s a hard rain, patches of the floor will start to darken and become damp bc water is underneath. ... Except I lifted the floor of the tent up to see what was going on and saw water had gathered, not dew."
"Ultralight materials are very light, yes, but they are very delicate and tear and/or get holes easily. Ask me how I know..."

"But if you have an ultralight tent, the fabric is much lighter and thinner: way easier for ants, mice, etc. to chew into."
Coming in late here, but the updated Copper Spu got rid of the rainbow door (now side zip) and has a dual zipper vestibule that allows you to stake out an awning. Never had an issue with durability at all.
I bought the 2025 copper spur up 3 and absolutely love it! The awning seems a little bit silly, it’s super small. That being said I love the duel zipper door. You can get something out of the tent without climbing in the vestibule. The 3 person is good for 2 people with plenty of extra space.
Another vote for the BA Copper Spur UL line!! We have the 2 person and now as a family of 3 plus two mini Aussies we have the 4P. Love these tents, so spacious!!
I have a Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 person tent that I really like - if you find it onsale you can get it under $500. But as another poster said, the Durston 2 person tent is the favorite among those who have it - since my tent is working fine I haven't needed to make a change.
Big agnes 3 person with 2 vestibules. Free standing tent, not too heavy.
I found a screaming deal (so I thought) for the Big Agnes Big House 6 at Campsaver last week for $360. Either price is an awesome markdown from the $599 they still get for same tent in the green color. I've had their Copper Spur 2 UL for years and love the BA quality. I've read (here) the orange fly may attract wasps (thus their surplus and discontinued color) but I've never experienced that with my Copper Spur (same color) in the High Sierra. Besides, I only attach the fly when I NEED to (1:6 trips). Best of luck!
Gotta tell you that I bought the BA CS UL several years ago and the weight, packing size, ease of setup and quality of construction was worth every penny.
That’s an easy one. Get the Big Agnus Copper Spur two person tent. It’s not cheap. Going to run you $500. It is as light as they come for a two person backpack tent. I recently used mine while summiting Mt Adams. https://preview.redd.it/69w2unzvg6uf1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e882044157945db76c6ae2eb5d72bc63a27d6e13
I have a copper spur 2 person for my self. It’s a retail store “ultralight” tent. If you’re backpacking and weight is a concern it’s a good tent but you will want to be careful as the material is thin. I also have the groundsheet for it to protect it. If you’re car camping just get a cheap tent from Walmart. I’d say get a 3 person tent for two people. Tent ratings for people a lot of the times still go by the old 20” wide mummy shaped pad standard but most people are using 25” rectangle pads these days. No need to save weight or spend a bunch of money for a car camping tent. Esp when ultralight tents are a thinner material to save weight.
Why would you carry a two person tent on the pct? Do not underestimate the impact of carrying more weight than you need. I hiked the pct - my tent was 16 oz vs the copper super 2p at 2lb 10oz, a massive weight penalty. Given you almost certainly will be carrying trekking poles I think you’d be insane to carry a 2 person freestanding tent. Get a 1 person tent period. Extra space and weight is a NEGATIVE. you will want a small floor plan to fit into tight spaces. You want light weight. You will be carrying trekking poles, so make sure those poles are double duty meaning they also support your tent.
2 person tent is probably the worst ‘bang for the buck’ weight upgrade you can do on trail, unless you are literally too tall to fit into a one person tent. Sleeping in a two person tent is exactly the same thing as a one person tent. It’s not more comfortable. It’s far worse. It’s an extra pound you are carrying for 2650 miles. If op is a big guy he should be 1) getting a long & wide sleeping bag and 2) getting a long and wide sleeping pad. Those two things will make a huge difference in terms of comfort. A 2 person tent gives you almost zero positives unless you are literally over 6’5” Having a larger tent gives you nothing but downside unless you physically cannot fit into a one person tent due to being 6’5” or above. I’m 6’2”. Having a roomier tent isn’t nicer in trail, it’s worse. I’d much rather carry a 1 person tent, and put the extra weight / bulk into almost anything else except a 2 person tent. I don’t think it’s common at all for people to use 2 person tents on trail at least when I hiked the pct. When do you hike the pct?
