Coming in late here, but the updated Copper Spu got rid of the rainbow door (now side zip) and has a dual zipper vestibule that allows you to stake out an awning. Never had an issue with durability at all.
I bought the 2025 copper spur up 3 and absolutely love it! The awning seems a little bit silly, it’s super small. That being said I love the duel zipper door. You can get something out of the tent without climbing in the vestibule. The 3 person is good for 2 people with plenty of extra space.
Another vote for BA, but the 1p
We have a core equipment tent that we got from costco for car camping. i think its the 10 man version. it is hilariously huge, and weighs like 40 lbs. it is very spacious, has a built in LED light strip, and sets up in under a minute. it has held up well in the rain. the 6 person version is on costco for $140 i have a ultra light 2 and 5 man big agnes copper spur tents for when we are hiking in to camp, but for car camping the ease of the core equipment tent is great, and you really dont need something as technical as the Wawona.
I have a copper spur 2 person for my self. It’s a retail store “ultralight” tent. If you’re backpacking and weight is a concern it’s a good tent but you will want to be careful as the material is thin. I also have the groundsheet for it to protect it. If you’re car camping just get a cheap tent from Walmart. I’d say get a 3 person tent for two people. Tent ratings for people a lot of the times still go by the old 20” wide mummy shaped pad standard but most people are using 25” rectangle pads these days. No need to save weight or spend a bunch of money for a car camping tent. Esp when ultralight tents are a thinner material to save weight.
It's out of your budget but the Big Agnes Cooper Spur is top notch. Ultra light and very sturdy. Will fit well in your 40l pack. I have used mine dozens of times over 100s of miles. Have fun.
I roll with Bug Agnes Copper Spur UL 2P most of the time, and lots of my pals use Tiger Walls to shave weight. Matter of preference. I happen to like free standing tents if a lot of reasons. Anyway, BA: They are good products. Not to say there aren’t other great tents out there, many that fit this sub better in terms of weight, I’m just endorsing one I use more than any of the other 5 I own. If OP is claustrophobic maybe even consider a 3P but that won’t sit well here on the ultralight forum.
The two zipper fly entry absolutely has a place when you are sitting out a storm/socked in by weather (esp wind) and need to do your cooking from the tent. Take a look at some of the video created by Swedish hikers to see how they have configured the fly and tweaked it to create a wi break and a sheltered area for cooking. The BA CS UL works better than most tents in this regard because of the two zipper configuration. The only tents I have felt more comfortable cooking in for long periods (more than 2 days) are mountaineering tents. As a sun shade/hangout space (which is the concept they tried to market), I never extend the awning. Mind you, the scenario I paint here is the main reason why most seasoned guides bring along a tarp in addition to their tent. That doesn’t match well with UL principles but I have endured many days when not having a tarp made my base camp experience pure misery. Fast and light only matters if you can travel. Many zero days require more gear than most UL enthusiasts want to carry, and takes you more into the world of lightweight.
I have a Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 person tent that I really like - if you find it onsale you can get it under $500. But as another poster said, the Durston 2 person tent is the favorite among those who have it - since my tent is working fine I haven't needed to make a change.
