By experience I can recommend the Cabela’s Alaskan Guide series dome tents. I have the 8-man model but literally my first night using it, an unexpected thunderstorm blew through. Radar was red/yellow with heavy rain for at least half an hour. The tent was dry as a bone inside and barely flinched at all during the storm. Those things are solid as a rock and worth the money.

I see. thx. My biggest tent is an 8-man dome tent by Cabelas (Alaskan Guide) and it's kinda tricky to setup and take down but I've got the method down to an art. Just curious if a bigger tent like a 10-man tends to be trickier since that's a lot more material/poles, etc. to keep balanced while you're trying to stretch it taut and get it standing on its own.

I ended up discovering that I have to setup the three primary poles against tent stakes first, but while doing so, I go ahead and clip the tent body partially to them to equalize tension against them so it semi-stands on its own, lacking extra hands to help hold it up. Then that allows me to finish setting up the horizontal poles and get the tent structure completed. The rain fly is a beast to get put on, if it’s breezy out but I usually manage to wrestle it in place. Then I go about the arduous task of setting all the stakes and guy lines out. (That thing has tons of em)

I also have the 8 man Cabela’s Alaskan Guide tent and love it! I can set it up by myself if needed (a little tricky but doable) and it’s the best tent I’ve ever owned.

I had the Cabela’s Alaskan Guide 8p tent. I can’t recommend it enough! It is an indestructible beast! Somewhat difficult for one person set up, but 2 makes it easy. It’s large, very sturdy, and kinda heavy. Mine held up in 70mph winds in the Nevada desert and another time a 3” limb fell from a tree and bounced off the tent. Zero damage! Maybe I was just lucky? I do like the blackout tents available now days and if extreme weather isn’t a concern, and Darkroom Coleman tent would work well…

I have both the four and eight person versions of this tent. I’ve been camping in the PNW for decades and they’ve taken everything Nature has thrown at them.

Cabelas six or 8 Alaskan Guide Tent. I have owned this tent for 15 years. Did lots of family camping and kept us dry. Backpacking I just use the rei 1/2 dome. Seam seal it. However my hard core backpacking day are behind me.

I have this tent and it’s a beast. It’s by far the most sturdy tent I’ve ever had.

We’ve use a Cabella’s Guide Series dome tent for 16 years. Been through 5-6” of rain and 70+ mph winds. No water intrusion ever. Big, expensive, heavy. Worth every penny.

Haha I meant like do you want more fabric or bug screens for the walls - I would never have a tent with just open walls. If it’s a hot place you want as much bug screening as possible for ventilation. The Nemo Highrise is a nice tent you can stand up in. Nemo is overall a highly reputable company and will stand behind their products. I have their backpacking tents. I have a friend that has the North Face wawaona 6P that he has had no complaints with. Someone else mentioned a Cabelas guide tent which I have (the cheaper green model) it’s a way more structurally bomb-proof tent, but has less ventilation and you cannot stand up in the 4P model. It will be warmer though if you camp in cooler weather and handle weather a ton better than taller tents. Big Agnes is another brand to consider too.

Same here. The Cabela’s alaskan guide tents are great, but heavy. Definitely wouldn’t want to backpack with one. I’ve got a North Face, can’t remember the name but it’s their version of the rei half dome. Bought it used in the early 2000s and it’s still going strong.
