Might I suggest the Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Model Geodesic 4-Person Tent with full vestibule and extra storage or cooking space out front. Right now on Sale for $299. $100 savings. Another option until you find exactly what you want is to Rent a tent from REI or other places that have rentals. This would allow you to explore your options and try out different types of tents. Just so you know if you look how a tent manufacturer shows their tents it’s based on 4 people with no room for gear unless store outside or in small doorway. I’ve been selling tents for all types of campers for 35+ years. Most people don’t know that tents are basically just sleeping areas and not storage. So typically if you plan on having 4 people 5’ or taller camping you should be looking at a 5-6 person tent. 4 people sleeping and room for 4 Packs or anything else that is needed. You can understand this better by taking everyone to a Store set up a tent with sleeping pads and sleeping bags. Lay down look how much space is available around you. This will give you a better understanding of what you really need. My rule of thumb I’ve always said to customers is if you have bags, backpacks or other items. Take one person out of the tent . So a 4 person tent will fit 3 adults or youth over 5’ and all gear. Cool thing is Cabela’s Alaskan 4 Season tent does come in a 6 person tent. Which would allow you more space for backpacks and gear plus 4 people sleeping. Nice thing is you can separate the weight into 4 people so it’s more evenly weight distribution. Cabela Alaskan Guide Geodesic 6 Person. We actually have the 8 person, but the 6 person would be easier to set up if you don't need the extra space. These are pretty bombproof, ours has weathered many a high wind and hours of heavy rain and has held up well. It's not a tent I would want to set up every day, but it sounds like you stay in place for awhile before moving on. I would also recommend getting the floor liner. It's not necessary, but it helps protect against chair feet. Read the reviews on the Cabelas site, and there are also some review videos on YouTube. Bonus: It's on sale right now. Cabelas Alaskan Guide Six Person. Been in some serious rain and wind storms. I got the Aluminum Pole model.
Cabelas Alaskan Guide Six Person. You won’t get wet. Get the version with aluminum poles. I have had mine for 15 years. Has yet to fail me.
I have a six person Cabelas Alaskan Guide. Great tent for the elements and plenty of room. Two cots a chair and a folding table. When the kids were young queen size air mattress and two sleeping pads for kids. Plenty of room even with the dog. It’s overkill for campground Camping but you won’t get wet. As I get older bigger doors to get in and out. I have had the tent 2012
I have a 4 season Cabelas dome tent. I had a stove pipe access added afterwards. It holds snow well and when the snow slides down to the ground it presses inward. This is the real test of 3 season to 4 season. 3 season tents will bulge and flex. Poles break or release causing problems. I had 2 feet of snow fall over night a few years ago. I didn’t have any issues. All I had to do was go shovel a bit of snow off the sides. My EZcube tent would have collapsed at 6 inches of snow. It is my favorite 3 season tent. I’m 6-5. So I can stand up and get dressed easily. But for rain or snow. It’s useless.
I like my cabelas Alaskan guide geodesic tent. I don’t remember which size it is, but it comfortably fits 4 people and can stand up to pretty high winds with the guy wires out
Mine finally gave up after a decade, or I would do the same. We car camp, so weight isn’t a worry and the Cabela’s Outfitter geodesic tents have been rock solid. We had to get a bigger one as our family grew, but the little one works great for the teenagers now and I love being able to actually stand up in the big one.
I don’t really need the duty cycle of the Outfitter tents either, but after a week or so hunting in the rain of the coastal Cascades it’s really, really, nice to come home to a 100% dry tent. It also absolutely ensures that my Wife will never get the opportunity to bitch about a leaky tent. In some situations, overkill is worth the price :)
Cabelas six or 8 Alaskan Guide Tent. I have owned this tent for 15 years. Did lots of family camping and kept us dry. Backpacking I just use the rei 1/2 dome. Seam seal it. However my hard core backpacking day are behind me.
I have this tent and it’s a beast. It’s by far the most sturdy tent I’ve ever had.
Alaska Guide series from Cabela’s. That thing was a rock!
We’ve use a Cabella’s Guide Series dome tent for 16 years. Been through 5-6” of rain and 70+ mph winds. No water intrusion ever. Big, expensive, heavy. Worth every penny.
