I have a Carlsbad 8 person that’s 15x12 but we also bring along our Sundome 4 person for situations that won’t allow the 8 person. As others have said, most National Park grounds list the pad site size. Also, speaking of downsides. Larger tents create a larger profiles. It can be detrimental in situations such as strong winds.
I got a Coleman Carlsbad darkroom 8 person tent for like $125. It's a discontinued model so it's cheap, has a huge vestibule, and stays cool in the heat. For a budget tent I'm super happy with it! Honestly I'd probably get the 6 person version for just two people because the eight is huge.
I have the Coleman Carlsbad 4 person black out tent. It has a porch with a drain screen built into the floor. I absolutely love that tent, can't go wrong with Coleman.
It depends upon the tent you get if it will be hard to put up by yourself. I did a 6 person ozark trail dome tent by myself and I currently put up my 6 person Coleman Carlsbad by myself. The Carlsbad is shorter than the ozark trail but both went up moderately easy, not as easy as one of those ones you just fling and it’s set up but those tend to be a little stuffy inside.
Yes! I have this tent too and love it. Plenty of space without being too big and quick set up.
I have the Coleman Carlsbad 6 person tent. The price has come back down recently. Now's a good time to jump on it. It was $100 more for most of this year. https://preview.redd.it/jbcr6dvto87g1.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d1cb4b3fc2b23803671ff270b159d8f71cb5127
I have the Coleman Montana and the Coleman Carlsbad. Love the Montana, but the footprint is huge. We don't camp a ton, but this is our most-used tent and is plenty spacious for our family of 4. I hate the Carlsbad. Ours is only 4p, so idk if the 8p is taller, but I can't stand up in it. But the *worst* feature is the vestibule. The zippers come together at the ground in the middle. There's nothing holding it taut, so you can't unzip it one handed *and* it's on the ground. It's extremely frustrating if you're carrying anything. Plus, there are large holes on the sides of the vestibule for cords or whatever, so you'll get plenty of bugs in there.
I’m currently sitting in a tent similar to the first one (Coleman Carlsbad Dark Room with Screened Porch). Personally, we love it! We also have a Big Agnes Big House 4 which we love too and is of higher quality than the Coleman, but with little kids, having the blackout feature is really nice. Happy to answer any questions!
