I have a Coleman Sundome 4-person dome tent that I can set up and take down in about 5-7min. Is it fancy? No. Was it cheap? Yes! I bought it for $50 in 2022 and it has held up nicely over several trips.

We’ve used the coleman sundome for years and it did great in storms and the ventilation is summer weather was good.

The coleman sundome was my go-to for 2 decades of car camping. Great ventilation and it’s waterproof for at least the first few years, after that either spray it or replace it.

If you’re looking for an affordable tent, get one of the coleman dome tents.  Keep in mind that a 6 person tent will be very tight for 6 full grown people. If the boys are 15+ get at least a 8 person tent.

You get 6 feet in the center of a Coleman 6 person sundome tent

I have a sundome 6 person that is many years old. Bought it lightly used quite a while ago, honestly dont exactly know how old it is. Probably approaching a decade if not more. I have refreshed the waterproofing a few times, and always put a tarp down to avoid ripping the bottom. My only gripe is that the white fabric of the sides has gotten stained in a few spots.

Find a used Coleman Sundome 6 person. I know thats probably excessive for two people, but it is really nice to have for space, and the ability to stand fully upright inside.

Coleman sundome 6 person is a good size for a roomy 2 person setup. Plenty of room to sleep, and if its rainy, theres space for some chairs to play cards or other games.

I have a coleman 6 person sundome tent and its super easy to put up and take down. Its reasonably waterproof if you stake it out really well and don't have things pushed up against the walls.

The coleman sundome is about as good as you can get in the "cheap but good" category. Mine is starting to show wear in the corners, but I've had it two years and it has lived through some TORRENTIAL thunder and windstorms.

I switched from a giant 8-person tent to a Coleman Sundome 6 last year for basically the same reasons, my back and my car space both thanked me. The center height is comfy enough to hunch over and dress, and I can set it up by myself in like 10-12 minutes tops. The ventilation’s decent too. Only thing is it doesn’t have a screened porch, but I just throw a little mat under the rainfly at the door for shoes and it works fine.

The Sundome or Cabin series are car camping staples. Great value, easy setup, perfectly adequate for 40-75°F. The ventilation is decent and they're bomber in light rain. Downsides: heavier materials, can get condensation if you seal it up too much. Honestly for your use case, Coleman is probably the practical choice. The price difference could go toward a better sleeping pad or quilt which makes way more difference for comfort.

Your experience with the Ozark Trail tent actually highlights the biggest factor here: in wind, size and shape matter more than brand. Tall, boxy 6-person tents act like sails, especially at this price point. Sustained \~35 mph wind is pushing any budget family tent, but lower-profile dome tents tend to handle it much better, which is exactly why your smaller backup tent performed better. If bad weather is a real concern, I’d focus on a simple dome design with a full rainfly, fewer big mesh panels, and solid guy-out points. From your list, the Coleman Sundome is probably the most proven option in storms when it’s well staked. The larger Coleman models and the Sequoia are more comfortable, but their height makes them more vulnerable in strong wind unless you’re very sheltered. Personally, I’d take a slightly smaller, simpler tent that stays standing over extra space when the weather turns.

I was in your exact spot two years ago. 5'3" mom with a 4 year old. Got a 6 person tent and never regretted it. The extra space means you can stand up to change yourself and the kid, plus room for a potty at 3am. I found a Eureka Copper Canyon 6 on FB for $80. Keep hunting. Coleman Sundome 6 is also solid and like $120 new. Don't overthink it. Get the 6 person. You'll thank me.
