Coleman makes decent lower cost tents. I had an 8 person that withstood several crazy winter storm fronts in florida while island camping (60-70 mph)...I did use all the guy lines and they were secured to trees or tree roots. I have also had a 4 person 10x10 dome tent from coleman that worked great https://preview.redd.it/f61egic2lptf1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7894d5619f7bcf8c2db3f933bfa9419af460dc4

i have owned 2 coleman 8 person tents that utilize that same design. they were not the black out ones ( I camped in florida and it got crazy hot here, so i wanted thin material that was light colored). this design stood up to LOTS of wind and rain very well. only complaint would be a lack of air flow as all the windows were a few feet above the ground so it was tough to get air flowing through the tent. IF you are camping in a warm location a small battery fan may be a good idea

I looked up your tent. looks like they added a vent in the rear / bottom. this would help with airflow and a small fan down there would suck in (relatively) cool air. The windows at the top would help eliminate condensation ... and there is a lot of room in these tents. was not an issue for me. My first coleman 8 person (**Montana**) with this design had a small doggy door in the back, that had a screen that helped with ventilation. The second one did not have the doggy door, but did have a lot more material on sides of the door to that created a rain-free awning

That tent is a coleman montana 8 person. I have had 2 of them,.they are very sturdy when all the guy lines are used. It does well in the rain... the fly covers the 2 side windows very well. my only complaint would be the windows are high so there is not much air flow low down. I always bring a small fan so not an issue. The coleman 6 person is what I used last. It was fine after I my dog passed and it was just me. I like to have enough room to stand, and bring a chair and small table inside incase it rains. This one is 10x10' and 6' tall. https://preview.redd.it/vna1vl7a5krf1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c7cb984cda2696f6a6e11b307ce64be9bd89425

We use a Coleman Montana 8p tent (A2) for our family of five and the tent is still going strong 7 years later.  It’s rained while we camped and we stayed surprisingly dry for a cheap tent without a full rain fly.  We all have plenty of room and once you know how to set it up it’s pretty easy.

We have an 8-person Coleman Montana for our family of five.  We’ve used it for about 8 years now.  Fits us wonderfully.  It’s not hard to put up but does require two people. A dome-style tent might be easier, or even an instant cabin tent.  I would keep everyone in the same tent, especially since you’re just starting out.  My oldest 2 are 10 and 12.  Even though we’ve been camping since they were babies, I do not think they’d feel comfortable in their own tent yet.  Maybe soon. I’d get the oldest 3 and you sleeping pads (if you can afford it), and put the 1 year old in a pack n play.  If you can’t afford sleeping pads then use air mattresses - but make sure they fit without touching the walls of the tent.  Our Coleman Montana can fit two queen air mattresses with a pack n play in the middle.

I have the Coleman Montana and the Coleman Carlsbad. Love the Montana, but the footprint is huge. We don't camp a ton, but this is our most-used tent and is plenty spacious for our family of 4. I hate the Carlsbad. Ours is only 4p, so idk if the 8p is taller, but I can't stand up in it. But the *worst* feature is the vestibule. The zippers come together at the ground in the middle. There's nothing holding it taut, so you can't unzip it one handed *and* it's on the ground. It's extremely frustrating if you're carrying anything. Plus, there are large holes on the sides of the vestibule for cords or whatever, so you'll get plenty of bugs in there.

I have an 8 man Coleman Montana. I've used it several times with my 4 kids but without my wife, or with my wife but just 3 kids and we have plenty of room. We could still fit 6 of us in there, but at that point there wouldn't be as much room to spread out. In your situation I'd recommend starting with the 6 man and expanding as needed. Because a large tent is much harder to find a good flat spot clear of roots and rocks.

Family of 5 here. We upgraded from a Colman Montana to a NorthFace Wawona 8 this year. We love the new tent, it’s so much easier to errect and disassemble.

We bought the Coleman for $80 in an Amazon sale. The NorthFace cost us $500 at REI (it was on sale and we had sone dividends to use). We broke the Coleman twice during the year we owned it. We haven’t broken the NorthFace yet. The Coleman was perfectly serviceable, but the NorthFace feels more spacious (smaller floor area, but more vertical space and a huge vestibule). The Coleman was more prone to condensation buildup, especially camping in the spring.

30 of my 32 years i spend camping weeks at a time in a Coleman 8 person tent from Walmart. My parents couldnt afford anything else when we were kids and the tent worked great. When I turned 20 my parents got me my own coleman 8 person from Walmart and it rocks. I use it any time im campground camping. Its huge. We call it the tent condo. One time we had 2 queen air mattresses, a play pen, and 3 suitcases in it for an entire week in total comfort. And once my mom cut a hole in the side of her tent, sewed a sleeve on the tent and put a window air-conditioner in it. Talking about lap of luxury. Lol mom said she wasnt that worried about messing up because the tent wasnt that expensive.

I agree that the Coleman is a great value. I have a 8p one and use it for troop outings. When it’s just my son and I, I opt for my smaller 4p one as it is easier to set up and tear down.

r/campingColeman 4 man "instant setup" tent. Any good?

I have had the eight person for about four years now. We use it maybe three times a summer. It’s very heavy. So definitely a car camping tent. It is easy to set up. Not quite as easy to pack away. We did camp through a torrential downpour. With the rain fly, it did leak a bit near the windows. I subsequently bought tint wax and waxed all the seams near the windows. Haven’t used it in the rain since so I don’t know if it worked. One thought. We are two adults and one kid. We can all sleep in half the tent. That leaves the other half as a living room if the weather is no good or at night, I put a blanket down, a couple of camping chairs, and a table, and we have our own little tent cabin.

If you are car camping, go big on the tent. The space is great. I use a 6-8 person tent for myself and two dogs. I can fit a queen sized cot, side table, and double camp chair in the tent with plenty of space left over. Really nice when there is bad weather. Plus being able to stand up and move around in a tent is great. The exped megamat is one of the most comfortable sleeping pads you can get. I recommend putting it on a cot to get yourself further off the ground. I don’t bother with an electric cooler and just have a good Rotomolded cooler from Ozark trail. Can hold ice for a 5 day trip when packed correctly. For cooking I bring a Coleman stove and a tripod so I can good over the fire or on the stove depending on what I’m making. Between that and a cast iron pan and a pot I can make just about anything. I just bring my pillow from home. I’m by my car so space isn’t an issue. Especially since I switched to a minivan this year. Even with two large dogs along I have a ton of space to pack. I used to have a small sedan and packing was a bit more interesting in that. A roof bag came in handy. For water I bring a 7 gallon igloo container that I put under the table. I have a USB powered faucet and a hose runs down to the container. Works out great and so much easier to use. I get a lot of heat on sale, second hand, and from Sierra. My tents are Coleman and Ozark trail. The Ozark trail one is a 6 person instant tent that I bring if it’s a quicker trip and good weather. The Coleman is an 8 person but not instant. Has better weather resistance though so if rain is in the forecast I bring that one.

OMG. We have the same tent, same size family and we called our "The Condo" as well. Each boy had their own area and mom and dad had the middle with a queen size air mattress. The big old 100 lb lab even had plenty of room.
