I just got the Coleman 4 person Carlsbad Skydome with screen room and it's the best bang for your buck. Super easy set up, love the screen room for shoes and temporary space for gear as I switch from morning to sunset hikes. There's a video on YouTube by SquareandTrue to see the setup in action. I got the room darkening feature, but with the rain fly off, one side is 75% screen. Invest in quality stakes, use your guy lines and tie downs, you'll be fine. The less you spend on a tent, the more you have to spend on a other stuff. Coleman is reliable as long as you take extra care to secure it and store it well. I invested in a NEMO self inflating sleep pad and I'm so glad I did, so worth it..
If you love the Naturehike Dune Hot Tent for the tall porch but want a smaller footprint, you can consider the Coleman WeatherMaster or Coleman Skydome with Screen Porch. Both have covered, waterproof porch areas where you can stand and take off your wet gear, and they fit 2-3 people comfortably with room for an air mattress. These are budget-friendly car camping options with easy setup and good weather protection. Check out [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/KeepThisInMind/comments/1mdmrgb/reddit_2_person_best_camping_tents_recommendations/) for more detailed reviews and tips. I hope it 'll help you find the perfect tent for your needs!
I have the first one the Coleman porch sky dome tent. Was given as a wedding gift and I’ve used it twice. Easy to pop up takes maybe 5 min with 2 people. Hoping to try it in the rain one day. Definitely recommend
Get a big & inexpensive 6p tent like a Coleman sky dome or something for the family and then a basic 4lb’ish 2p backpacking tent like the Featherstone Granite in case some trips require backpacking. Both tents combined can come in under $300 and will last long enough to figure out what you need or don’t need. Spending big money is really only necessary if you know you’ll be backpacking over long distances or camping in extreme weather. UL and true 4 season tents are pricey and totally unnecessary for car camping.

Skip the Skydome honestly. It's decent for the price but the fiberglass poles and lightweight fabric don't handle wind or rain well, and with a 6 and 3 year old you're gonna want something that feels solid when you're wrestling gear in and out. The Wawona's a solid pick but the weight is brutal for what you're getting. At that price point the Big Agnes Wyoming has better materials and the extra headroom actually matters when you're chasing kids around getting them dressed. FWIW I have the Nemo Riff and it's been tank, but for family car camping something with a proper vestibule for muddy boots and gear makes a huge difference.
We have a 6 person Coleman sky dome and my 5’11 partner can stand comfortably in the middle, not so much the sides. It only ran us a little over $200 so maybe a 10 person would have better height and still be in your budget. Space was a big priority for us but we are not made of money lol and Coleman tents seemed to be the sweet spot, I’d browse their website.
Damn we bought ours for that price in the last couple months?
On the coleman website the 6 person is around $180 rn still. I’d bet Amazon is doing spring/summer price surging. Crazy to me as a US southerner when it’s about the best the worst camping season. I’ve seen news stories that some companies were talking about rolling out adjusting pricing based on past purchases and what they algorithmically determined your income level to be, if Amazon did it first that wouldn’t surprise me one bit. Edit: Whoops, just saw you said coleman listed it that price too. We wanted the one with the little porch and it was sold out for months so maybe demand? The one we got it listed the same on coleman. Even still to OP’s desires coleman does the job and is cheaper than most. I hate how expensive camping has become. We did our first back country trip last month and had to drop ~$400 between a camping stove, wagon and the camp site
That totally tracks, that’s one we wanted but it was sold out for months! We had to get one without the “awning.” It was a great option for a budget tent. I just wanted a secure place to take off my boots before getting in the tent, me and everyone else i guess. I think you got the price before the hype, lol
Hey shoutout coleman still tho bc the north face equivalent is like $600. Love coleman tents, it’s all you need if you aren’t facing extreme weather. Broke ours in last weekend back country camping and it stormed an entire day. We chilled inside all day, cozy like 40 yards from the colorado river. What more could you ask for at >$300
I have been extremely impressed and happy with my Coleman Skydome 6person tent. It’s not the best for backpacking but great for car camping. I use mine in the PNW and Olympic Peninsula. https://preview.redd.it/79gwcgjd3h0g1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8dc6b72e953dc22e25ee21a39d1fd59e0cfec6d1 It sells for around $250 unless you buy the Skydome Dark Room where the are charging more $350+ Coleman offers a nice waterproof tent with the Skydome the rain fly comes all the way down to the ground. Coleman also has a tarp like material that covers the floor and 6” up the side walls so even if water was underneath the tent you would not get wet. Skydome offers enough room for my girlfriend and I to relax comfortably without having to put our clothes on while sitting. We use 2 cots with memory foam and in between each others cot is a small table and two chairs. This is nice when the weather is bad. Skydome offers a screen porch that works great for gear or pets to sleep at the same time full rain fly on the entire tent. This will be my 3rd year using this tent. I average about 20 weekends of camping from Late April to October. The tent has performed wonderfully.
I’ve been camping with Coleman tents for the past 40+ years and never had any major problems with the tents. I’ve also sold camping gear for the past 40+ years. Most people have problems with tents because how they set the tents up or with rain fly not being deployed correctly. Always set the tent up then stake it down. If you stake the tent down first then try building it, it can be down right difficult. Specially when dealing with a dome tent. After setting up the tent and staking it down. Now deploy your rain fly. Don’t just lay it on the tent clip in in and use the straps and stake them out completely. Once properly installed this will help with airflow. Most Coleman tents come with a 3/4 rain fly. Which serves its purpose for Spring, Summer and Fall weather conditions in most weather conditions for the northern hemisphere. I use a 6 person Coleman Skydome tent. Mainly for the extra room and it has a 6’ center height. Myself my girlfriend and my 2 labs sleep in a dome style tent that offers a full rain fly and a screen room attached which is where the dogs sleep. This has been by far my favorite tents Coleman has produced. There’s some facts that you must understand when buying a tent. First how many people will be using this tent. Let’s just say 2 and you go looking for a 2 person tent. When any tent manufacturer they don’t take in consideration that you’ll have gear in the tent with you and if you plan on using a big airbed or cot. Their considerations are just how many people they can fit in the tent. So flip the package over and what you see is 2 people in mummy sleeping bags and small camp pads. You won’t see any room for backpacks or duffel bags. Just sleeping bags! Notice the sleeping bags are not touching the tent walls and the bags are elsewhere. This is what most manufacturers consider this to be 2 person tent. So unless you’re going backpacking with the tent always add 2 more people to the tent you are looking for. This is to allow you to have room for bigger sleeping pads, air mattress or cots plus bags. Something you should know every tent will make your gear wet if it’s leaning against the tent wall. It comes from condensation and happens all the time early morning. So don’t come into the store mad as a wet hen that your bags are soaked and the tent failed. No you left your bag leaning on the tent wall and it got wet from condensation. 99% of the people who tried to return their tent due to they got wet. It was due to poor installation and placing gear against the tent wall.
No it’s not crazy! Specially if you’re car camping. If you’re backpacking yes you would be a bit crazy. Only due to the weight you’ll have to carry. Car camping you really don’t have a weight limit unless you only drive a micro car. For car camping I use a 6 person tent just so I have room to sleep on my cot and have extra room to sit in my camp chair inside. I’m not a little kid anymore I don’t want to put my clothes on while sitting on my buttocks. I want to stand up stretch and have room to relax. Even if my Girlfriend comes along I still have extra space for all her gear and her cot. My new favorite tent is Coleman Skydome 6 person tent. Inside the tent itself is enough room for 2 queen air mattress’s and a good 16” all around. Then there is a sun screen room attached to the front that has full rain protection. This is where my gear sits and where my Chocolate Lab likes to sleep. I’ve had my Skydome for 2 years now and approaching my 3 Season. I love this tent for so many reasons but my main reason is the full rain fly that covers the entire tent. I live in Washington State and most of my camping is in the state. There’s no guarantee that I can have sunny weather for my trip. This tent covers me perfectly. https://preview.redd.it/q7a9kd58wivg1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6bd5b13aa188824ba3a4d42ad9add15099df0631 Get a larger tent and enjoy the space in comfort. Happy travels. 🌲🌲⛺️🔥🌲🌲
I use a 6 person Coleman Skydome. Good amount of space for me, a femme, and all the gear I need to bring in at night away from curious animals or driving rain. A double sleeping pad takes up just about half the space. Have just enough room to stand and change. Dont be fooled by the "6-person" marketing gimmick. That tent could sleep about 3 people and their stuff reasonably. Packs away neatly in the back of my truck where it lives in between camps. Just know though that once you go big, you'll never go back to a single or two person tent ever again.
