This is a great tent, we have used it during a car camping with a total of 5 people and recently for 2 people. It is nice and roomy! It was raining the first time we used it and it held up well. Can take 20-30 minutes to set up- 2 people. We brought a fan (Makita brand) with a battery cuz we are in Texas but pretty happy with this tent.

We have the size down of this tent. I mostly love it but in the summer when it’s hot it sucks because there are no windows. I have to lift a corner of the cover off to sleep comfortably

I just bought this tent, I didn’t realize that most of the top side is mesh, was that an issue for you during night time. I’m worried it’ll be too cold

Personally I think this size is perfect for 4 people with a little extra room. Any time they list for X number person tent, they literally mean packed in side by side like sardines so never believe you can put 10 people in there comfortably. And you got it for a great price. Just keep in mind with a larger tent that your campsite can accommodate it.

It’s requires more time and 1+ people to assemble and disassemble. Also, good luck trying to put it in the bag.

My new Coleman is very watertight for now. The tarp idea can work, but when it's raining heavily, it's often also windy. And then the tarp slaps against your tent and is loud AF. I had to do this with my old tent and it took me a few nights to figure out a system with a lot of heavy stones, extra pegs and ropes to tie it down well enough. If the tarp is not big enough to go all the way to the ground and you can put heavy stuff on it, it will not really work well.

The perfect tent for families with young kids. The trade-off is that the are dark all the time, especially on rainy days. Most other tents these days try to maximize brightness when it’s cloudy, which is far nicer if you have teens and adults who can sleep more easily. My kids struggled to stay asleep in our bright tent, and have no issues in this one. Very worthwhile.

For a Coleman tent of that size, that's a really sweet deal. Coleman, I believe, offers the best bang for your buck when it comes to tents. Ozark Trail will suffice as a training tent when learning how to camp but they just aren't the quality of a Coleman for a few bucks more (or even less expensive with deals like this). I make sure I have a full ground cover tarp that exceeds the width and depth dimensions of my tent AND heavy or extreme duty tarp that UV and weather resistant that envelopes the tent too. For that Coleman dimensions 16'W×9'D×6'H, I'd pick up a 20'×30' HD silver on both sides tarp or the same size but ED silver/black tarp. These are perfect additional weather protection (wind/hail), or as a sunshade when erected off the tent itself and in cooler/colder temps, additional insulation when wrapped to the tent.

I have used this tent all over the country, in big rain and heavy winds as well as dirty and dry. It holds up through it all to be honest. Best 100 I’ve spent in a while for gear

I have two kids, 5 and 3, and have a Colman 10p dark room tent. We got the dark room to make sure the kids could have a mid day nap when they were younger, but now the youngest has dropped the nap. The darkroom is a sweat box as soon as the sun hits it in the summer, but it stays a nice temp in autumn. I've also got a 23 zero bandit swag that I hoped to take the eldest with away as setting up the 10p tent when he was 4 was a lot of effort while trying to keep him entertained. So far we have only used it in the backyard. If I had my time again I would probably grab a oztent rv5 to go with the swag and our gazebo, because normally our trips are very short, 2-3 nights. So I want to keep the setup time to a minimum to make sure it is worthwhile. Most of our holiday time is spent visiting family interstate and overseas. I'd consider what type of camping you are doing? Are you staying in one spot for a while, or touring etc? Maybe with having 2 extra kids, a second hand soft floor trailer tent would be the go if you are doing 1-2 week trips.

I recently bought a Coleman 10 person dark tent I recommend it for families who are car camping like you describe. Lets the kids sleep in more. I have pics of it in my profile in one of my posts. For my kids I just use a reflective heat pad thing under their sleeping bag and then bring a lot of extra blankets in case people get cold. Bring fun little dollar store activities like glow bracelets or those little whistling slingshot helicopter things you shoot in the air. Main issue will be if the 2 year old requires a lot of attention at night. Some are good sleepers and some wake up screaming. I’ve gone through both situations and when it goes bad it can be very tiring but you know what your kids can handle. Not sure what else to say but I’ve taken my young kids camping every year multiple times for many years so if you have specific questions I can try to answer. I think it’s super good for them to do it even when it’s hard for the parents. Edit: white noise app on a phone hooked up to a battery overnight can help a lot with the quiet/random loud sounds at campgrounds. I recommend that too.

I don’t have this specific tent but a similar 10 person Coleman and it’s great for 2 adults and 2 kids, with a good amount of space between beds so we can have luggage or hang out if it’s raining. If it’s just two people it’s a really big tent but if you want a lot of extra room, it’s great. Our setup was done with 1 person and it went up in about 15 mins.

I have a new 10p Coleman that I just got to replace our old, similar Coleman cabin tent and I love it. The old one held up for years of abuse and I kind of just wanted to treat us to a shiny new one, the older could still be used for years to come. The one feature that I LOVE and this one doesn't have is the hinged swinging door. It's a huge game changer for kids going in and out of the tent non stop. Otherwise, I'm sure this tent is awesome and the dark tech sounds fabulous too!

I second this but say go for the "skydome" version which has extra headroom that's clutch for changing and mid-night bathroom trips.

I actually have the Coleman Skydome Dark Room model. I'm not sure if it's comparable but I'm conflicted on it as the performance in the rain was fine, but it retained heat and a section of the fly tore on the first hour. I cannot rule out if it was human error or if my expectations of remaining cool should not be placed on the tent but rather on my equipment to keep me cool (fans, portable ac units, water).

I have the Coleman sky dome. It has lasted me over 6 years. No problems at all. Would highly recommend. Keeps me dry and there is plenty of space. However, six people would definitely be super tight in there. Would not recommend going over four people

I have the green and gray Coleman Skydome. Very nice tent with very bad design flaw. When you put the rain cover on top it blocks all of the openings leaving very little air flow. When it is hot at night it’s pretty miserable in there. The only thing you can unzip is the front door to the porch and if it rains that night congrats you are hot AND wet. I’d go another direction.

Are you saying there's no point in camping if you don't want to be up with the sun?

r/camping • Am I missing something with blackout tents? ->

becamico • 3 months ago

So you've kind of answered your own question. It doesn't make sense to you so don't buy one. I've been camping for going on 30 years and we bought one and it's fabulous. I don't find that it adds any extra bulk or weight, it wasn't really more expensive, and we enjoy the extra sleep in. Don't buy one if you don't want one but leave everybody else alone about it if they do.

Then it isn't a good one. My dark rest tent does not let any light in whatsoever except a few specks where the zippers are.

If you’re looking for an affordable tent, get one of the coleman dome tents.  Keep in mind that a 6 person tent will be very tight for 6 full grown people. If the boys are 15+ get at least a 8 person tent.
