Honestly I would say to just look at a 6p Coleman tent. I would not go too expensive for a starter tent. Personally I like tents that have a rainfly that goes almost to the ground. And a vestibule is always nice too. This is the style I am talking about. I love the Coleman 6 person dome tents. I use them for my Girl Scout troop. If you want to use them in colder temps, I recommend the Darkroom over the Sundome. The rainfly goes lower and provides more insulation.

Dark rooms are actually a game changer

Get the cabin tent!!! I work stage crew for festivals, so I live out of my tent in the summer. My issue with the other tents is the flimsy poles that split and break with use. I got caught in heavy storms in a field with a Coleman darkroom tent last year, it completely flattened and the poles split on two sides. I sprung for a cabin tent and have lived through at least a dozen storms (did you see what happened at Secret Dreams last month?) with no issues at all. That tent cannot be bothered!

My 4-man Coleman has weathered some beatings over the past 10 years. Solid tent.

I’ve used the North Face Wawona 4 and 6, along with a 4 and 6 man Coleman.  The Coleman’s held up surprisingly well. They don’t do as well in the wind or rain though.  The NF tents are a much higher quality though. Thicker poles, stronger fabric, better in the rain, better features.  Something to think about is size. The smaller tents are easier and faster to setup. Plus you need less soft. The Wawona 6 has a huge vestibule/ rain fly. It takes a lot longer to setup, and while I can do it all solo it takes much more time than the 4. My 2 and 3 man backpacking tents are even faster. If you are getting in late and go with a normal tent, smaller is probably better.
