"Cheap and great for the price: a Coleman Sundome. ... for family camping it's really amazing bang for the buck."
"It has a heavy polyethylene bottom that's going to last much longer than the ultra thin silnylon they use on backpacking tents and even if it didn't last longer it's 10% the cost."
"Yup - this is the tent that I recommend for beginners on a budget going car/base/festival camping."

"I use a 4 person just for myself, but I also want to be able to stand up inside. (I’m short so do slightly tilt my head but my back thanks me for upgrading from a 3 person where I had to stand over hinged at my hips)."
"Previously I used the Sundome 3 person but my back decided standing hunched over was no longer an option, with the 4 I can stand up and just tilt my head."
"It’s a four man tent, but it’s perfect for one man and three dogs. ... My girlfriend and I have used it with two dogs and we still had room."

"My current car camping tent is a Coleman sundome that weighs around 8 pounds. ... That doesn't feel that heavy just holding it but it's 3 pounds heavier than an REI 2 man backpacking tent and 6 pounds heavier than a Durston X-Mid 2."
"I'm looking for something lighter"

"It won't last forever or stand up to big storms ... it's the wind that really puts a hurting on these style of tents. ... The poles are not very strong and if they are not pegged out on the sides - the wind can push on them hard."

"Sundome in year 3) door zipper failure."
"The only complaint I have is the zipper. It can get snagged easily but I haven broken it yet."
4 person Coleman sundome was my first tent and it is perfect for a beginner I would say. Waterproof through bad storms, and it has a bucket or tub floor. The floor actually comes up the sides about a foot, so there’s no seam on the ground level to leak. Easy to set up alone, and great for one or two to share. Price point is right on budget too, I think the 4 person is under $100.
r/camping • Whats the cheapest 2 man tent you would recommend for someone who is looking to get into camping for the first time? ->I went through heavy downpours with a Coleman sundome including inches of standing water, never had a leak. The bottom of the tent is especially well-designed for water I think since it goes up the sides and doesn’t have seams on the bottom. I have camped in this tent in cooler fall weather in the Midwest down to around 30F and was pretty okay when layered up in my sleeping bag with hand warmers inside. I totally trust this tent in rain though. ETA: I just looked closer at the picture you posted and this tent is different from the one I have, though it has the same design on the bottom. The 4-person sundome tent has a different rain fly/window design, though it still isn’t a full rain fly.
r/camping • Thoughts on this tent and sleeping bag for Joshua Tree in early December ->The sundome is a solid tent
r/camping • Broken tent! Cheap recos for temp replacement? ->The coleman sundome was my go-to for 2 decades of car camping. Great ventilation and it’s waterproof for at least the first few years, after that either spray it or replace it.
r/camping • Looking for a solid 6-person tent — any recommendations? ->I have two Coleman Sundome 4 person tents that I have used for 5 plus years. I love them. I have used them in the rain and they haven’t leaked yet.
r/camping • Whats the cheapest 2 man tent you would recommend for someone who is looking to get into camping for the first time? ->Honestly if your just car camping get them a Coleman sundome 4. It’s not an amazing tent but they aren’t by any means bad. Kids are rough on equipment so getting something that’s solid at a good price, but won’t break the bank if it gets destroyed is key. Plenty of space for friends if you ever take people with you or need to loan it out. If you’re doing backpacking trips then the trail made should be perfect. Keep in mind though that 3 1/2 pounds is only for minimum trail weight (rainfly, footprint, poles). The whole package is over 5 pounds.
r/camping • Your child is getting bigger, and wants their own tent. What kind do you get them, and how old are they when you first let them use it? ->Coleman Sundome 4person. I use a 6 person blackout and it is enough for 2 adults on cots.
r/camping • Whats the cheapest 2 man tent you would recommend for someone who is looking to get into camping for the first time? ->Several of our other adult scout leaders have them. I’m not a fan. Rainfly is a separate purchase. It is fast to set up, but weird. And awkward to take down and dry out. It isn’t worth saving 5 minutes of set up to cause more hassle later, Door is only on one side, which makes it hard to use 2 cots (6 person). I would rather do a Sundome for similar size/ease with more utility.
r/camping • Coleman 4 man "instant setup" tent. Any good? ->Love my Coleman 4 person sundome. I use it for solo camping and sleep on a cot in colder weather. Never had any water leak in.
r/CampingGear • Best 4 person 3 season tent? ->We got the coleman sundome on rollback for $70ish Super easy setup and fast.
r/camping • Coleman, skydome w/ dark room tech 10P ->We've been seeing it everywhere in national parks. Great little tent value for the cost.
r/camping • Coleman, skydome w/ dark room tech 10P ->The Coleman sundome is a 4-person tent, so it fits 2 people comfortably. It runs about 70$ and sets up quickly and easily. (We carry with us in case we arrive at our site and need a fast setup because of the weather) It stands 59 inches center height, so depending on how tall you are, you may have to bend over a little, but at least you can stand. I'm not sure how many 2-person tents are available that you can stand in.
r/camping • Looking for a small tent you can stand up in ->I use a Coleman Sundome 4p tent (it comes in other sizes too) and think the Sundomes are good value for the money. Others recommend Ozark Rail from Walmart but I’ve never used them. Both of these will be less than $100 for a 2P. I’ve never had water leaks from rain in my Sundome but you need to know how to pitch the tent (higher ground, use a ground cloth (tarp) that doesn’t extend beyond the floor of the tent) and be prepared to reseal the seams on cheaper tents. Be aware a 2P tent is designed to fit 2 people side by side with no extra room. If you are planning to camp in the backyard, consider going bigger. I camp solo in a 4P, used to in a 3P but being able to stand up (I still have to tilt my head but I’m not hinged at the hips) was necessary due to back issues).
r/camping • Whats the cheapest 2 man tent you would recommend for someone who is looking to get into camping for the first time? ->I’m 5’2” and can stand it Coleman Sumdome 4 person with my head titled a bit not in direct center. The 6 person I could have stood straight up in but I wanted the smaller footprint since some campsites close to home at a challenge finding a sites with a flat enough spot for the 6 person.
r/camping • Tent you can stand in comfortably ->How many people will be sleeping in the tent. Make sure you go big enough. A 4 person will fit 4 people right next to each other with no room for anything else. I use a 4 person just for myself, but I also want to be able to stand up inside. (I’m short so do slightly tilt my head but my back thanks me for upgrading from a 3 person where I had to stand over hinged at my hips). I use a Coleman Sundome 4. I also looked at the Flatwood II (also at Ollie’s) and felt the Sundome was better (rainfly longer and an extra zip up window maybe??). Buying used, for any tents make sure the poles are still good (this is a weak point on low priced tents). They shouldn’t be split and the inside elastic should be intact. The ends shouldn’t have a bunch of dirt stuck inside. I make sure mine is cleaned out when repacking. You can clean it out but to me it shows if the tent was well cared for. The Sundomes are good bang for your buck tents and always go on sale so you may want to consider new in case you don’t see any holes in the fabric, issues with poles, no bag or needing to buy stakes. The fact that the Sundome is bundled with a queen mattress could be a bonus but it’s going to take up most of the floor and if it’s just an air mattress it’s going to be cold sleeping on it as they don’t insulate from the ground (a self inflating foam core pad is better). I don’t know anything about the Hooligan or Columbia tent so can’t speak about them but a dome tent will be easier to set up and take down.
r/CampingGear • Choosing a first time tent? ->Coleman Sundome provides good bang for your bucks. They go on sale often too. Definitely get a bigger tent than for the people listed. That number is for the people right next to each other and no space for anything else. Do you like what you borrow from family? If so use that tent style, size and brand as your starting point.
r/CampingGear • Best tents for newbies? ->Sundome is not the best tent on the market but I think it is a best value. Skydome is slightly different configuration but similar. Can t beat the price at Ollie’s, but if you don’t have one nearby the Sundome goes on sale a lot of different places. I have a 4 person Sundome and it’s easy to put up a take down. I’ve used it about 25 days over the last 2 camping seasons and this year plan on applying seam sealer (so far no leaks but I consider this regular maintenance).
r/CampingGear • Best 4p Tent for regular camping? ->Yep. Get either of the 4p tents (1 man tents suck when it rains). Also grab a few extra tent stakes. Then head over a department or two and grab a tarp (significantly larger than the tent footprint) and some lightweight cord (paracord or light clothesline). Use the cord, stakes, and tarp as an additional rainfly/awning and you'll be fine.
r/camping • Broken tent! Cheap recos for temp replacement? ->This (Coleman Sundome) was my first tent, as well. It was a great tent and the only reason I upgraded was because I wanted something bigger.
r/camping • Whats the cheapest 2 man tent you would recommend for someone who is looking to get into camping for the first time? ->My vote is for the Sundome. It was my first tent when I got into camping. I've upgraded to a bigger tent, but I still have it. Great tent for the money.
r/camping • Broken tent! Cheap recos for temp replacement? ->I recommend the Sundome as well. The darkroom feature is really nice.
r/camping • Best pop-up tent? ->A Sundome or Skydome is still easier to set up and a lot more waterproof. The fact that they added an extra sold separately rainfly to the Instant shows it’s bad.
r/camping • Any reason not to get a bigger tent. ->If you have an Ollie’s, they will probably have new Coleman tents for less than Facebook. I just got a 4 man Sundome for 39.99
r/CampingGear • Choosing a first time tent? ->Blackout and waterproof. I rock a Coleman 8 man Skydome or a 4 man Sundome
r/CampingGear • What do you personally look for in a car camping tent? ->Coleman Sundome and Skydome are both super easy
r/CampingGear • easy to setup/pack up tent. ->Coleman Sundome or Skydome. Check out an Ollie’s if you have one. The other Coleman tents will probably be just fine too. But I would avoid the instant up - sets up fast but leaks so badly they made an additional rainfly for it.
r/CampingGear • Anybody have any recommendations for a portable 2 person tent? ->Try a Coleman Sundome or Skydome from Ollie’s, blackout if you can get it. I’ve bought both to festivals with multiple severe thunderstorms and was much dryer than people who brought much more expensive tents. The bathtub floor will be much better in bad weather than this tent. Sometimes you can get a dud Coleman that leaks in one spot, but that’s only happened to me once. Just set it up and test it in rain before your event. I will say avoid the instant tent, that thing is so bad they sell an aftermarket rainfly to fix it.
r/camping • has anyone used this tent by blackdog? not very many reviews and i’m wanting to make sure its going to hold up for several days at a time for festivals and is weatherPROOF! ->If you check out the Sundome on Amazon, I think it’s the most reviewed tent they sell
r/camping • has anyone used this tent by blackdog? not very many reviews and i’m wanting to make sure its going to hold up for several days at a time for festivals and is weatherPROOF! ->And IMO, the difficulty of putting it away offsets the ease of setting it up. Gimme a basic Coleman any day.
r/camping • Pop up tent ->Coleman tents are generally VERY waterproof. I’ve used one many times in severe thunderstorms. Check out the Amazon reviews for the Sundome.
r/camping • Pop up tent ->I didn’t bother to buy it after testing the instant tent in the rain. But my Sundome and Skydome are great in bad weather
r/camping • Do you guys have experience with these? ->Poor design. The Sundome and Skydome don’t leak like that
r/camping • I need a tent that can handle some rain. ->Honestly for the durability and price I love my old Coleman sundomes, I have a 2 man and a 4 and they haven’t let me down in over a decade of use.
r/camping • Looking for a great quality tent that will last many many years, for a family of 8, ok with using 2 Tents. (Car camping) ->I like my Coleman sundome tent. I've put up the 4 man myself several times. For comfort, I'd get 2, so the adult kids can have their own. The bigger the tent, the more difficult to set up.
r/camping • Best pop-up tent? ->My 4-man Coleman has weathered some beatings over the past 10 years. Solid tent.
r/camping • Coleman, skydome w/ dark room tech 10P ->By the way I’m a member of r/snowpeak and thought your question asking about the Alpha Breeze entertaining to a bunch of Snow Peak nut jobs. lol I’ve had various tents for various situations over the years. Earliest memory was using a Coleman four man tent with my family when I was a kid, an acceptable tent for a child, but I also didn’t know any better. I would say any sub $200 tent now probably falls in the same quality of cheaper tent fabric and lower quality poles. In my teens and throughout my 30s, I got big into backpacking so it was with brands like MSR and Big Agnes. In that time of lightweight backpacking tents, I really loved the original MSR Mutha Hubba (3p), it was lightweight and very packable and was spacious relative to its total weight. I’ve since gotten a newer MSR Hubba Hubba (2p) which I like, slight lowering in quality since the 2000s era of MSR quality. Which brings us full circle to the Alpha Breeze, it’s now my dedicated car camping tent, having also slept in and seen other tents that friends bring on car camping trips. It’s something I view as a long term investment that features thoughtful tent design along with the durability that comes with quality. Last thing, the price is high, but I’m seeing this as something that will last me +10 years, if not 20. Which over time breaks down to about $60/year if using 10 years.
r/camping • help! purchasing first tent this weekend - snow peak alpha breeze or eureka space camp 6? ->Coleman Sun Dome. Be aware that an N-Person tent fit's N people uncomfortably. You should get a 6 person tent to fit 4 people
r/CampingGear • Best tents for newbies? ->When I take my two kids camping we use to use a Coleman Sundome for a couple years but I got so tired of having to set it up and tear it down that I got a Gazelle T4 tent and I've been very happy with the ease of setting it up alone in under 90 seconds
r/camping • Any reason not to get a bigger tent. ->I've had that Sundome and it's fine for a budget car camping temp. Real nice for two people and a dog. Will fit a queen air mattress and still have room at the foot for a dog bed.
r/CampingGear • Best tents for newbies? ->I've had a couple of the instant set-up cabin tents throughout the years, I will keep buying this type until I make the jump to travel trailer. However, I cannot recommend the 10p Core with the built in screened porch. The porch is basically useless in the rain, it doesn't detach & holds the front part of the rainfly. If you decide to keep the screen open it just collects bugs that quickly make it into the tent when you unzip the doors to get in. This is my first Core & probably my last, will probably go back to the Coleman in the same size for my very last tent. Choose Wisely.
r/camping • Tent recommendations for a couple of senior gentleman? ->Sure, I get where you are coming from, not really an advantage but better experience, at least for me. My personal experience is with one of my older tent coleman sundome, where the fly kind of goes just below where the screen material is. In windy conditions, the, due to the gap, the wind finds its way in and make the fly very flap around a lot and hence its very loud. My experience with a full fly tent, I have a marmot limestone, I can pull the fly tight and low to the ground which minimizes the wind going under the fly and therefore the wind noise due to the material flapping around. YMMV
r/CampingGear • Looking for recommendation on all season four person tent for scouts ->Dude, my first two tents were coleman. Shit man, I still got them and they still work great. Oldest one close to 15 years. I went from a 4P Coleman to 6P Coleman when I had kids. So if you can get one in good condition or buy it.. go for it. I got my coleman sundome for like a 100 bucks. If you don't want a coleman, you can sang one of these from costco for a 100 bucks - https://www.costco.com/core-6-person-lighted-dome-tent.product.100892929.html Now a days I have a Marmot 6P, recognize that this is 500$ tent. Don't spend this kind of money for your first tent unless you have money to spare or plan on going a lot of camping. The difference between a 100$ tent vs a $500 tent are: - More indoor pockets - High quality tent poles - No snag YKK zippers - Easy to pack bag - better ventilation But from a core tent/sleeping POV, its the same. IF and WHEN you are ready to go backpacking, it would be good to invest in lighter smaller gear. A decent backpacking tent is pretty expensive.

r/CampingGear • Choosing a first time tent? ->And Coleman has a super popular four person tent, that will accommodate two comfortably, has that expanding bag, and easy set up and take down. The stakes are junk of course.
r/camping • Coleman, skydome w/ dark room tech 10P ->I picked up a used Coleman four person tent for my boys for $40 on eBay. They started sleeping in it when they were 4 and 6 years old.
r/camping • Your child is getting bigger, and wants their own tent. What kind do you get them, and how old are they when you first let them use it? ->Both of my kids have them and use them often. I have borrowed them a couple of times and really loved the fact that they block that unwelcome morning sun. They don't seem heavy, they are just coated with a different material that maybe adds ounces. I am speaking of the Coleman 4 man tents however.
r/camping • Am I missing something with blackout tents? ->If you're trying to tiptoe into camping, I wouldn't necessarily recommend high end gear, although if you do get into it, higher end gear is better in the long run. For now, if you have nothing, start simple. I'd recommend something like a 4 man Colman tent. Coleman make great car camping gear that isn't going to break the bank, and if you really get into it, you can splurge for the higher end tent later. Get a tarp that is about the same dimensions of the floor of your tent and put it under it for protection. Also, the stakes that come with tents usually aren't all that great, so you may want to get something heavier duty, and get sand stakes if you plan to camp on the beach. For cooking equipment you can find some great deals on Marketplace, but a simple two burner propane stove is cheap and easy. Some folks really like the Blackstones, and so do I, but I find them heavy and find a two burner to be a little more versatile. It's really a personal preference. For cooking equipment, if you want to save money, just grab stuff from your kitchen and put it in a storage container to take with you. GSI makes good cooking gear and I personally like stainless steel stuff from Stanley, as it compacts for storage and I can be rough with it. Go with compostable paper plates to save yourself some cleanup. Start making a list of the small stuff as it pops into your [head.Med](http://head.Med) kit, flashlight, headlamps, towels, etc.
r/camping • Planning my first camping trip ->I've had a coleman sundome for a few years now and it's been a great tent for me. I have had it in some pretty heavy rain and it's always been dry inside. However, the last year or so I have been tieing a large tarp over my tent area to help a bit with some of the condensation / water that tracks through. It's a very small tent and I always end up touching *a* side and that causes water to come through. With a tarp over top it does a better job of keeping dry.
r/camping • I need a tent that can handle some rain. ->Same here. I have this exact tent and it most definitely is a three-seasons tent. I've been poured on for days in the PNW with no leaks.
r/camping • Thoughts on this tent and sleeping bag for Joshua Tree in early December ->Several recommendations for the Coleman tents. Of the two models mentioned, Sundome and Skydome, the Skydome is the far better tent in my opinion. The Skydome has an all clip suspension, while the Sundome has partial pole sleeves. An all clip suspension tent is much easier to pitch solo than a tent that uses sleeves. Stake the corners, assemble the poles, insert poles in the corners. Unzip the door, take off your shoes, step into middle of tent, clip the top clip over both poles. Attach the rest of the clips and add the fly. The Sundome, you'll have to raise the tent body as you insert the poles in the corners. That adds weight and resistance. Lastly, the Skydome has a full coverage rainfly, while the Sundome only comes down halfway. Spend a little more and get the superior tent.
r/CampingGear • Best 4p Tent for regular camping? ->The Coleman will probably do the trick as they don’t fret about the weight but also look at some European brands, they’re better at the bathtubs imo The BA having a 1500mm floor is yikes to me, 3000mm+ baby! (Checking- the lowest I have is 4500)
r/CampingGear • Small tent that can handle lots of rain ->The tent looks exactly like a Coleman Sundome tent. To the point where I'm pretty sure they just stole a picture of one and slapped their logo on it. An actual Coleman tent is pretty affordable and will last a good amount of time for the casual camper.
r/CampingGear • Should we buy for first time camping? ->It depends, you know? I have three tents that were each $400+, one is a two person backpacking tent that weighs like 2.5lbs, one is a 3 person backpacking tent for canoe trips, and one is a 4 person snow tent for the winter. I **also** have a $60 Coleman sundown that I got on Amazon like 8 years ago and it's my favorite "Im going car camping this weekend" beater tent. "Oh shit that tree branch is kinda rubbing on the tent, do you think it'll tear?" "Dude this thing was $60 and built like a tank who gives a shit" You're probably buying the perfect tent for what it's made for.
r/CampingGear • Gearlabs top 19 tents are all 200$+. One is even over a thousand. Are those of ua getting the 70$ amazon special really buying junk?! ->I love the Coleman 6 person dome tents. I use them for my Girl Scout troop. If you want to use them in colder temps, I recommend the Darkroom over the Sundome. The rainfly goes lower and provides more insulation.
r/camping • Affordable 6 person tent ->They often get flak for being on the cheaper side or being a "dad tent", but Coleman makes great, sturdy tents for the average car camper. If you're not camping in extreme weather they will suit your needs very well. I just retired my 5+ year old Coleman Sundome after 60+ nights due to a tear and will be replacing it with... a Coleman Skydome.
r/camping • Tent suggestions on a budget - reviews are contradicting.. ->The coleman sundome is about as good as you can get in the "cheap but good" category. Mine is starting to show wear in the corners, but I've had it two years and it has lived through some TORRENTIAL thunder and windstorms.
r/camping • I need a new tent; what do you recommend? ->Cheap and great for the price: a Coleman Sundome. Get a 3-person for every 2 people. We've had far fancier and more expensive tents, and the sundome just keeps going and going. It's not what you need for camping in a blizzard, but for family camping it's really amazing bang for the buck.
r/CampingGear • Anybody have any recommendations for a portable 2 person tent? ->Your friend should replace it? Coleman sundomes are great bang for the buck as long as you're car camping/not counting on them for extreme/survival situations.
r/CampingGear • Cheap car-camping tent recommendations? Maybe a good Labor Day sale item? ->This tent is going to be a pain the the butt. Get a large Coleman sundome.
r/camping • Planning my first camping trip ->Could be, probably depends on what is important to you. A higher quality tent has higher end fabrics and poles and probably less weight for the size. If that is important, you will probably pay more. Does that mean the 35.00 Coleman Sundome is junk, not really, it just means it is probably less rugged (fiberglass pole set) and definitely heavier. Will it work in a rainstorm, in my experience, mostly. Will it stand up to wind like a BA Copper Spur, nope. Horses for courses. Light, durable, cheaper: pick two. Look at REI brand tents for a decent balance of price and quality, but, they will be heavier than a similar tent for a more premium brand. My backpacking buddy has used his ALPs Mountaineering tent everywhere I have used my more expensive Big Agnes tent and has been perfectly happy with it.
r/CampingGear • Gearlabs top 19 tents are all 200$+. One is even over a thousand. Are those of ua getting the 70$ amazon special really buying junk?! ->Most under $100 are trash. Some can be gems though. The Coleman Sundome is a decent tent if you can deal with lack of mesh and fiberglass poles. The best budget tents out there are from Featherstone, Naturehike, Teton Sports and 3F UL Gear. Look for aluminum poles, mesh bodies (for summer tents) and silpoly or silnylon construction.
r/CampingGear • Gearlabs top 19 tents are all 200$+. One is even over a thousand. Are those of ua getting the 70$ amazon special really buying junk?! ->My kids were probably 8-ish when they got my 22-year-old Coleman Sundome.
r/camping • Your child is getting bigger, and wants their own tent. What kind do you get them, and how old are they when you first let them use it? ->Got my 2-person Coleman Sundome for $40 on sale, it literally survived a tornado while set up. I just had to stake it back down.
r/CampingGear • Should we buy for first time camping? ->You’re overthinking it. Just go pick up a six person tent at Dick’s or Walmart and you’ll be fine. I’ve been using the same Coleman Sundome for car camping for two decades, it cost 60 bucks.
r/CampingandHiking • Recommend me the best tent for family camping please ->Sierra trading post often has good deals on last year's models: https://www.sierra.com/s~tent/priceor~$0-$60/ the Sierra Designs (different company but on sale there) for $50 and the Coleman sundome for $60 are great deals on easy to set up 2-4 person tents. I think these are both better quality tents than the budget Ozark Trail models from Wal-Mart.
r/camping • What’s an easy-to-setup, budget (under $60) tent for two adults? ->I have a gazelle - great tent - super easy setup and it’s tall enough to stand in. Downside it’s heavy and big. Like the size of a small person in the bag. And I think it weighs maybe 30 some pounds. Like any tent you have to make sure it’s dry before putting it away etc. I also don’t like the fact that the floor is velcro-ed on. I haven’t had any issues but it seems strange. I’ve also had a sundome - it’s light packs small mine was a 3 person so it’s short and tight inside. Takes time to set up as with the poles etc. Some of the taller domes a shorter person would struggle to get the fly on. I’m 5’4 and have to keep that in mind if I plan to put them up alone. I have a tensleep I love - but it’s essentially a dome and a super large fly — hard to set up in the wind.
r/camping • Looking for a great quality tent that will last many many years, for a family of 8, ok with using 2 Tents. (Car camping) ->I have a sundome without the porch and love it. Got it for like $70 and it has served me well
r/camping • Do you guys have experience with these? ->We took a Sundome to Black Rock Campground. It was there that I learned the value of upgrading tent stakes. I've never been in such a windy campgound. Our tent blew over and it's probably only by sheer luck that it didn't blow away. I would recommend beefier stakes.
