We're Scouts. Normally we don't cold weather camp but we have Polar Day Camp coming up in which we intend to camp two nights in January. Our summer tent is a Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 person tent which has plenty of room for the 4 of us. We camped in 40 degree wind and rain weather last year and it kinda sucked, but we were also on air mattresses. We have since upgraded to cots so we're off the ground and not soaking up cold from the ground. So I'm looking for a similarly sized tent, one that hopefully won't break the bank but I realize it's one of those "get what you pay for" if we want to stay warm.
Our current Tenaya Lake is fully mesh on top, so I figure something with less ventilation on top would help trap heat a little better.
I had pretty much tour same circumstances ( 6'2", 1 kid and a wife) about 7 years ago when I found the then equivalent to today's Coleman Tenaya Lake on sale. This tent allows me to stand up straight even near the tent walls (a huge help when trying to put on enough clothes in the dark for a middle night bathroom run.). The size of the tent allows for cots for the family and an occasional guest, as well as all our clothing. 7 years on (@ 2 to 3 camping trips per year) the tent is in decent shape. If the tent accidentally burned to the ground, I would have little problem going out and buying another one.
I have a Coleman Tenaya Lake 8-person that I love for 4 people. It has a little closet for storing bags and is tall enough for me to stand up in (6’ tall). It also has a divider to make two separate rooms if you want a little bit of privacy between you and the kids.
I have a Coleman cabin fast pitch tent. They are awesome but very heavy and bulky. I like the cabin tents because you can actually stand in them.
When I got a new knee, after surgery, and we had a small tent, my bf got us a McMansion tent..for like 8 ppl! I could stand up in it and we could use an air mattress for ease of getting up/laying down. No one said a word, but it was sort of laughable, but I didn't care! It also had space for more stuff in the tent! What's "normal" anyway? Just have a great time camping!!
30 of my 32 years i spend camping weeks at a time in a Coleman 8 person tent from Walmart. My parents couldnt afford anything else when we were kids and the tent worked great. When I turned 20 my parents got me my own coleman 8 person from Walmart and it rocks. I use it any time im campground camping. Its huge. We call it the tent condo. One time we had 2 queen air mattresses, a play pen, and 3 suitcases in it for an entire week in total comfort. And once my mom cut a hole in the side of her tent, sewed a sleeve on the tent and put a window air-conditioner in it. Talking about lap of luxury. Lol mom said she wasnt that worried about messing up because the tent wasnt that expensive.
The Sundome or Cabin series are car camping staples. Great value, easy setup, perfectly adequate for 40-75°F. The ventilation is decent and they're bomber in light rain. Downsides: heavier materials, can get condensation if you seal it up too much. Honestly for your use case, Coleman is probably the practical choice. The price difference could go toward a better sleeping pad or quilt which makes way more difference for comfort.
We have had the coleman cabin tent for ~5 years or so. It is reliable and comfortable, we have slept in it in torrential rain, high heat, ~34 degree nights with frost developing on it; all of that has left it with no damage and solid water repelling still after all of that happening on multiple trips. The front porch feature with the rain fly overhang has been rly cool when we wanna avoid rain/bugs but still wanna chill at the campsite. I will say that it goes on sale sometimes and I think Dunham’s has it for a bit cheaper sometimes. But it is honestly one of the best tents I’ve ever used. We let friends use it in trips now because we got a gazelle pop up tent after going camping consistently for a few years. But we still love that Coleman, you can’t miss with it really.
