I had pretty much tour same circumstances ( 6'2", 1 kid and a wife) about 7 years ago when I found the then equivalent to today's Coleman Tenaya Lake on sale. This tent allows me to stand up straight even near the tent walls (a huge help when trying to put on enough clothes in the dark for a middle night bathroom run.). The size of the tent allows for cots for the family and an occasional guest, as well as all our clothing. 7 years on (@ 2 to 3 camping trips per year) the tent is in decent shape. If the tent accidentally burned to the ground, I would have little problem going out and buying another one.
I have a Coleman Tenaya Lake 8-person that I love for 4 people. It has a little closet for storing bags and is tall enough for me to stand up in (6’ tall). It also has a divider to make two separate rooms if you want a little bit of privacy between you and the kids.
We're Scouts. Normally we don't cold weather camp but we have Polar Day Camp coming up in which we intend to camp two nights in January. Our summer tent is a Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 person tent which has plenty of room for the 4 of us. We camped in 40 degree wind and rain weather last year and it kinda sucked, but we were also on air mattresses. We have since upgraded to cots so we're off the ground and not soaking up cold from the ground. So I'm looking for a similarly sized tent, one that hopefully won't break the bank but I realize it's one of those "get what you pay for" if we want to stay warm.
Our current Tenaya Lake is fully mesh on top, so I figure something with less ventilation on top would help trap heat a little better.
The Sundome or Cabin series are car camping staples. Great value, easy setup, perfectly adequate for 40-75°F. The ventilation is decent and they're bomber in light rain. Downsides: heavier materials, can get condensation if you seal it up too much. Honestly for your use case, Coleman is probably the practical choice. The price difference could go toward a better sleeping pad or quilt which makes way more difference for comfort.
When I got a new knee, after surgery, and we had a small tent, my bf got us a McMansion tent..for like 8 ppl! I could stand up in it and we could use an air mattress for ease of getting up/laying down. No one said a word, but it was sort of laughable, but I didn't care! It also had space for more stuff in the tent! What's "normal" anyway? Just have a great time camping!!
i have owned 2 of the coleman 8 person tent (b2). was a great tent except very air flow on the floor. if u are camping in warm weather bring a little fan. my first one withstood - 60 mph wind storm. use all the guy lines for full wind protection .
Coleman makes decent lower cost tents. I had an 8 person that withstood several crazy winter storm fronts in florida while island camping (60-70 mph)...I did use all the guy lines and they were secured to trees or tree roots. I have also had a 4 person 10x10 dome tent from coleman that worked great https://preview.redd.it/f61egic2lptf1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7894d5619f7bcf8c2db3f933bfa9419af460dc4
