I just went on this very search myself. Landed on the T3 Hub tent from Gazelle. Couldn’t be happier. Sets up in minutes. Super durable. Second room turns into a screened in porch. Tons of pockets. The catch is it’s 550. And is the size of a small man when all put away…
The Gazelle T3 has been my favorite as a solo camper. They larger ones. Setup is quick and so is tear down. The floor or tray is removable for easy cleaning. Been through some pretty nasty storms in it. It always stayed dry. Definitely not a backpacking/hiking tent.
Had a Gazelle T3.. love it. Though wished I had gotten a T4 for the space. Had to have my cot diagonal on the T3 to fit. Had a Resmed too though I’m afraid I’m gonna sleep through anything that’ll happen while camping… lol
Is there any particular reason for having the tent be in the truck bed at all? I ask because there’s not many advantages to that kind of setup. Most of the utility of truck bed camping comes from having a topper or popup camper mounted on the bed, which requires no setup/takedown. There is the alternate advantage of not having to find a spot for the ground tent, but you still have to level the truck, and the camping locations you described don’t seem restrictive enough to make ground tents unusable. If you’re already going to be setting up a tent, just get a good ground tent and maybe some cots. This way you don’t have to empty the gear out of your truck bed every time you want to sleep, and you’ll be able to have much more room. I’d personally recommend something like a Gazelle T3 or T4 tent, as the quick popup setup and box design make it a really nice experience. Also, all this comes from someone who sleeps in their truck bed overlanding, but under a fiberglass topper with a built out bed platform inside. If I didn’t have the topper, I’d stick to my ground tent. Hell, even with the topper, sometimes I prefer to just fill the bed with gear and still use a ground tent.
I have a T3 and with the rain fly on it's ok. However, like Loose\_Mission if it's damp enough or pouring enough the seams aren't the best and you can get a bit of water in areas the rain fly isn't. That said It's an excellent tent otherwise.
+1 Gazelle or Clam 4 sided shelter. For a table, I’d splurge and get a Lifetime commercial 4 footer. The ones they use at Costco to fold apparel on. They have a one handed pinch mechanism to raise and lower the legs. No folding, so smooth work surface in the middle and thin profile when stowing.
We have a two Gazelle tents (one one-room and one two-room) and their gazebo. They are a breeze to set up and definitely not a gimmick!
I would suggest two tents then. We have a massive Gazelle tent and it is geared for 4-8 people but if I had to share it, I would only say four people comfortably with our stuff inside the tent too. It sounds like you have a pop up tent too? These will always be long and bulky because of what they are. Our old tent was very compact when packed up but was not a pop up and took longer to set up. My husband hates the size and weight of the Gazelle but it is the trade off of ease of setting up/breaking down that he gets for it. I think your idea to go bigger to fit more people inside a tent is not ideal if you are already worried about the size of your current tent.
I have a gazelle ground tent it’s a game changer in the ground tent world, however, it’s a bit more challenging to transport if you have limited space.
