I’ve never found vents that work in rain… In my experience, vents only work when it’s cold and dry and I’m using the fly for wind protection. In that case, the vents allow some of the warm, moist air to escape instead of condensing on the inside of the fly and forming ice crystals. I still get some ice formation, just… less. When it’s raining hard, the RH is simply too high for vents to allow enough air to exchange. Instead, I tend to look for a tent design that allows me to keep the fly as open as possible during rain. For instance, if there are generous vestibules on opposing sides, I can keep the doors partially open to allow a cross-breeze. That’s the only way. Right now, I’m using three tents that I think are quite good: The Two by Gossamer Gear, Unbound 2 by HMG, and, Ultamid 4 by HMG. Those tents can be pitched or configured to allow a lot of airflow when it’s lightly raining or closed all the way down for maximum protection when it’s wild. I’ve seen some intimidating videos out of Scotland, though. Depending on where and when you’re going, you may want a freestanding four-season tent that’s more capable in heavy wind. Sounds like a fun trip! Have fun. Good luck.
We use a Gossamer Gear The Two! It has doors on both sides. We each have our own Nemo Tensors so if one person is rolling over it's not affecting the other. Also, separate mummy bags. I've included a link to my pack that also has the links to all the sleeping gear! [https://fethr.io/user/hi-c?pack=Overnight+Backpack](https://fethr.io/user/hi-c?pack=Overnight+Backpack)
I was in the same boat, but ended up digging around more and eventually buying the Gossamer Gear the Two on sale for around $250 (normal is a little over $300) it weighs 24 ounces and my friend and I split it or takes turns carrying when we backpack together. There are a couple other brands making similar weight/price, if you can work with a single wall tent. I had a 5 pound tent before...losing 3 pounds did make a difference (along with a couple other upgrades I have made over the years like a lighter pad).
Looks like Garage Grown Gear has them in stock? [https://www.garagegrowngear.com/collections/shelters/products/the-two-by-gossamer-gear](https://www.garagegrowngear.com/collections/shelters/products/the-two-by-gossamer-gear)
Have used the Xmid 2p and Gossomer Gears "the two". Both solid trekking pole tents which are easy to set up after a trial run. I'll be running "the two" on my upcoming solo trip. Haven't used zpacks, but im sure its comparable. Trekking pole tents are a great way to save weight.
If money is tight and you might go backpacking in the future (sounds like you're unsure, which makes sense, you need to try what works for you), then I think either this or X dome 1+ is a good choice. I agree that if you were certain you're going to do car camping only it doesn't make sense, but when you're starting out i think one multi purpose tent is useful. I started by backpacking and had Gossamer The Two, then got a bit into car camping and so the simplest thing to do was to grab my existing tent and pitch it for early car camps too
Solid has the sturdier fly, in material and with some of reinforcements (at least in earlier versions) and still has the YKK5 zip (versus the YKK3) which I personally prefer. X-Mid is A LOT better in the wind than the GG.
Take The Two if you don’t need to camp in strong winds or in snow. It’s so much lighter. In snowy and a bit more windy conditions X-Mid solid would make sense. It’s still not for winter (snow) storms, though
Yes, agree. As said, if winter camping isn’t a real requirement I’d prefer the Two.
Gossamer The Two is so close to meeting your request, and is on sale in a couple days at half off. Supposedly you can fit two tapered 25" pads in it. But it's 42" at the feet. I like my The One. Its palacious, light, and roomy, but a bit of a large footprint, similar to the xmid.
