Lightweight and strong are always going to be somewhat at odds with each other. The more you go towards one side, you compromise the other. Personally I’m a big fan of the Hilleberg Akto. It’s light enough but a very strong proper four season tent. I like mine a lot. In the Hille range you’ve got the Soulo which is a step up in strength but heavier, and something like the Enan which is lighter but less robust. IMO the Akto hits the sweet spot for four season UK summit camping. Someone above mentioned the Tarptent Scarp which is a similar kind of tent. The Fjallraven Abisko also falls into the same bracket. None of these are cheap but they are brilliant quality and brilliant strength to weight ratio.
At 900g with poles, the xmid is somehow only 100g lighter than a Hilleberg Enan. Considering the relative performance, this puts the xmid in the extreme heavyweight category of tents.
Do you have a budget in mind? Size requirements? Trekking poles, or tent poles? My tent is light and waterproof for sure (Hilleberg Enan), but there are plenty reasons not to choose that one.
Hilleberg enan or akto. Best quality if you want reliable tent when shit hits the fan. Swedish premium quality.
Don't get the Enan. Worst tent I've owned.
I have a Hilleberg Enan, great and holds up to rain and wind. Not super cheap but if you can find one second hand might me an option!
oh damn you're right they are even more expensive now! I got mine in a store closing sale a few years ago for 560 euros which was incredibly lucky, and totally worth it, but yeah don't think I would spend that much.
Hilleberg don't believe in selling you a supertight pack sack that you'll never get your tent back in. Their sacks are generous, but you can compress the tents pretty tight. If you're after a small tent for bikepacking, the Enan (I've got one) or Akto are an option, as are any of the other solo tents. They all have their pros and cons.
I'm 5'4" and own several 1P tents - Hilleberg Enan, Hilleberg Soulo and Durston X-Mid 1. I find them all more than spacious enough for most trips. Not sure what to recommend for your price range though; maybe something from Wild Country or Vango, or maybe the Sierra Designs High Side. If you use walking poles, then look for an older X-Mid on eBay, as they come up fairly regularly around that price.
I’ve not had an Akto but I do have the Enan, which is essentially the Yellow Label Akto. Great tent, quick to pitch. The Akto is a classic for a reason 🙂 Having said that, some people may find the Akto a little small. The Tarptent Scarp is an almost identical design but has more space, an additional entrance and additional features for snow loading. I think I personally would choose the Scarp over the Akto but it comes down to personal priorities.
