My recommendation is to buy a basecamp tent that you can spend a week at camp in comfortably with a cot. Then as your kids get into high adventures spend the money on a good light backpacking tent. Otherwise you will end up like most scout leaders and have many tents that don't do any one job well. Personally I use this tent for most weekend car camping with the troop and family. I have bought three now for me and my two boys and have had great luck. I prefer a natural color like green or brown to blend in with nature. Otherwise I have had pretty good luck with REI and recommend those to my troops youth. Forceatt Camping Tent 4 Person https://a.co/d/0h7HDJLZ Edit: My current favorite backpacking tent is the Nemo Dragonfly 1P tent. But by the time your daughter is ready for high adventure there will be something better. https://www.rei.com/product/C01602/nemo-dragonfly-osmo-1p-ultralight-backpacking-tent
Nemo Osmo Dragonfly 1p - it’s like 2 lbs, packs up small, and has a big vestibule for your stuff if it’s raining. That is the key. I weathered a 5 day monsoon in the sierras in this tent and it held up.
I have the Nemo Osmo dragonfly 1p and it is amazing. Only 2 lbs and has weathered many storms. Mesh is great when you don’t want to use the fly. Best park is the extra large vestibule to keep your stuff in.
No it is great. The best part is that you can keep your bag under it during storms and keep it dry. Also it makes the tent feel much more spacious even though it is a very light one person.
I had the 1 person Tungsten and it’s a really solid tent. Rode out heavy thunderstorms with hail dry as a bone. Only drawback is the weight. I’m old (49) and have dough so I upgraded to Nemo Dragonfly 1p and it’s like half the weight. Gave my Tungsten to a friend’s son who is like 20 and has the energy to carry a heavier tent
Nemo makes great stuff; have two of their tents and love them both. I have the 1p Dragonfly and it has held up well in pretty high winds in the desert. The Tracker has the “snow skirt” feature on the rain fly but I don’t know that I’d expect the pole structure to hold up to too much of a snow load; same for the Hornet. Others may have more experience with those tents in snow. If you haven’t checked out the Slingfin Portal, that might fit your bill. Haven’t used it myself but reviewers I trust give it high marks in inclement weather.
I have the Nemo dragonfly 1p. Spring for the 2p instead. It's only slightly heavier and provides more room.
I got a Nemo dragonfly 1p on close out for $269 recently. Great option at that price. Easy to set up, roomy, and very lightweight. Not sure what your budget is.
