r/UltralightNew 3-person tent - BA Copper Spur, Tiger Wall vs Nemo Hornet, Dragonfly
3 months ago

My wife and I have had the 2p versions of the BA Copper Spur, BA Tiger Wall, and Nemo Dragonfly. I didn;t like the Tiger Wall, and the Dragonfly had less head room than the Copper Spur and was heavier (this was an older generation). We still have the CS2P but two years ago we switched to the Hornet 3P w/ Osmo. Love that tent, and I don't see where we'll be switching to anything else. Really spacious, yet quite light for a DW. I've used various 1P Hornet's going back 10 years, and currently have the "Elite" 1P in Osmo. It handles weather really well. Osmo fabric is great. In your shoes, I'd definitely go with the Hornet 3P.

Since you want a double wall, I can suggest the Nemo Hornet 3P. Lighter and roomier than the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2P (which my wife and I also have). Available from Amazon so you can use your $200 card. Another great tent is the TarpTent Rainbow 2P Double Wall. None however are UL.

Look at 2p tents from Nemo and big Agnes. I have the hornet and it's awesome. Both these companies have life time warranty. All these guys recommending durston xdome...I wouldn't buy it as it doesn't have life time warranty and this product is brand new to the market. Google issues with it, many folks that purchased one had their frame poles break. I would wait and see how the durston product improves before I would buy one as they are not cheap.

I have the Nemo hornet 3p and it's an awesome tent for backpacking. It goes on sale multiple times a year. Look for it. I got mine for about 350. This has life time warranty. It's a full frame, double wall, (semi)free standing tent. It is also seam sealed and super light weight. I'm a big believer of buy once and cry once. Compare these features in other tents before you make your decision.

r/CampingGearAny thoughts on the Marmot Limelight Ultralight 3 Person tent?

Not sure why the guy is getting down voted for being right Listen my guy, I have a marmot limestone and I love it. I'm a huge fan of their brand. But if you are looking to spend over 400 bucks for a backpacking ultralight tent, you have a ton more options. My backpacking tent is the Nemo hornet I got on sale for 327 at REI and it's freaking awesome and very very light. I got it down to like 2 and a half pounds. I have a 3p as well. My buddy got the big Agnes tiger wall and that's a solid tent as well. If you want to go lighter, you can go with a trekking pole tent... Quite a few out there as well. Tldr I wouldn't get the limelight tent as if too heavy for the price.

I have Nemo hornet, semi free standing but it's a full feature tent. I love it.

We loved our Nemo (pic 2) on our recent trip. We bought the three person for the two of us to give us room for non food supplies inside, and it was very helpful in a rain storm. It was long enough for extra long sleeping pads also.

Having used so many tents over the years (for work), 37" is probably the lowest ceiling of all the tents I've ever tried out. Part of what's great about having access to all these tents is being able to compare between them all. Most any trekking pole tent will have a higher peak ceiling. Since I hike with 120cm poles that's going to be what I'm have for a ceiling, but many trekking pole shelters are spec'd to be at 130cm (time to get some flat rocks!). 120cm comes out to 47", and 10 inches more compared to the Osmo is not small. Having two peaks for tents that use two trekking poles (or even a ridge of approx the same height between), and that most of these tents are made for one person and not two, you can see where I'm feeling the Elite 2P feels constrictive. I just measured myself sitting straight against my door: 35" tall. Next time you set up your Osmo Elite, measure floor to ceiling, it could be a few inches lower than spec'd. The non-Elite Hornet 2P is spec'd at 39", but I've only measured it at 36" tall. I can only guess they're referring to the peak of the apex of the tent pole, and not the ceiling of the inner mesh. And you're right, when I'm moving fast all day and once I've finally stopped, I'm sleeping. But I'm also bringing a shelter that weighs much less than the Elite's 2lbs. I'm OK with the compromise of claustrophobia for that feeling of, "did I even pack this thing up back at camp"?

The OSMO Nemo Hornet is great but def not cheap especially if you get the footprint that goes with it.

Yeah, I got a good deal last year on the Copper Spur 3P, and while I like it because of how light it is, it feels super thin and I worry how many years it's going to last. I really like my Nemo Aurora 4p, but that's a pretty big tent to bring on a kayak, and love my Nemo Hornet Osmo, but that's a 2p tent, and realistically it's a 1 person plus some gear, but amazing for backpacking, and lowish to the ground, so I rarely worry about wind. Have taken it beach camping at Hammock State park a couple of times without any issues besides chasing sand out lol.

I just recently tried out the Nemo on your list on an overnight solo trip. I’m not impressed with a partial frame tent. It has to be staked out to be fully erect, and it’s difficult to get it pulled tight enough for there to be no sag. If you run into a rock or hard spot in the ground while staking, you have to start all over again and restake the whole tent. Also the rain fly doesn’t go all the way to the ground and creates a significant gap. It didn’t rain on my trip, but it was humid and the whole underside of the rainfly was dripping water onto me in the morning. Needless to say this thing is getting returned.

There are some pretty good clearance deals right now as the big brands are changing their lines over for spring. Big Agnes and Nemo have a few left on Amazon and REI still, I think. I snagged a ba fly Creek ul 2 for 200ish on Amazon that's going to serve as a backup/summer tent, and a 3p nemo tent (that isn't ultralight) for family trips with 2 people and dogs. If you can't find an amenable deal on sale, get an x-mid. It's the best value overall.

I have a 3 person Nemo and it’s a pain in the ass with only 2 people in it. Our Nemo Tensor mattresses slide around all over the place because of the extra width. Honestly, I’d take the 2 person if I could go back in time.
