Must say ive had the vern 1 over a year now and still amazes me never had a soulo though so cant compare
Hi, I’ve used the southern cross, suolo, Nortent vern 1 and a couple 3 season+ The hili is the definite winner and the reason why it’s the only 4 season tent I own now as nothing compares but unless you’re planning on going out in absolute snowstorms with mega high winds I think going for a 3+ season is fine. Before I had my hili I literally only had the terra nova voyager for about 3 years and was my year round tent and served me exceptionally well in bad conditions so it’s not always necessary to get the most expensive thing going if you’re not going to use it for that. If you are however then I would recommend the hili nortent vern 1 was super solid too and a good contender for half the price! Hope this helps! Happy camping 🏕️

I would normally suggest the Hilleberg Soulo, but you are probably too tall for it. The Hilleberg Unna is another solid option, with much more space. It looks like it has no vestibule, but you can unclip the inner in one corner to create one. Sticking with Norwegian tents the Nortent Vern 1 is a good option, or Varde 1 though it is quite heavy. As a bit of a wild card look at the new TFS Saga tent. It hasn’t been released yet, but there are several teaser videos on the TFS YouTube channel. It is aimed at the UK/European market. Suitable for taller European users, high winds and damp conditions. I think it will be available at the end of the year. I’m not sure any of these tents are truly ultralight, but realistically a 4-season tent that can handle high winds is going to be 2kg+. Checkout novice wild camper on YouTube, he is 6’5”, and does a lot of 4 season tent reviews from a British perspective; high winds and wet conditions. https://youtube.com/@novicewildcamper
I have the vern one and it's a really good tent. Good features. Such a glow in the dark zips. Double door. Mesh and solid door. Enough room. Nice little drying line on the inside. All round soild tent for the money
After owning the Vern 1 for a couple of years now, I still love it, but it does take up about 40% of my 65L backpack and weigh 3kg. I can only imagine the Vern 3 would need splitting up between several people. If this really is just a scaled-up version, the build quality, ease of erection, and warmth are outstanding. Mine stood up to quite powerful Scottish coastal winds without breaking a sweat. There are nice small touches too, like the zips have glow-in-the-dark tabs. If you have the space and weight requirements covered, go for it.
Most people use tents that cant handle the same winds as the x-dome. Hell, alot of people rarely use a tent or tarp at all for the most of the trail. I saw so many x-mids on trail this year, but I didnt see problem with the mid not being ‘bombproof!. What was your disappointment? If you really want something bombproof, get a black label Hilleberg Soulo or a Nortent Vern, but it really is overkill for the PCT imo.
