Regarding tent, how large of an air mattress/cot/sleeping pad do you anticipate for 3-6 people. Where would those sleeping systems go in each tent, would it fit in the tent, would it fit and still allow space for people to walk (in case someone needs to use the bathroom or someone who goes to sleep late or wakes up before everyone else)? Pick the tent that has the best layout given the sleeping systems you anticipate. Anecdotally, I impulse purchased an Ozark tent because it was on an insane sale, deeply regretted the purchase once I had fiberglass in my hands trying to put it up. Check the materials before you buy and if it’s fiberglass, be careful/wear gloves.
Yeah, the tent I bought up had fiberglass rods, it’s actually common to see them in cheaper/affordable tents as fiberglass is quite cost effective for its strength. I was picking fiberglass splinters out of my hands after assembling the tent in the backyard. I didn’t look up your exact tents, but this 12 person ozark tent has a fiberglass frame, it’s listed in the description under ‘Durable Materials’, it’s also listed under materials. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-12-Person-Glamping-Tent-19-x-18-x-84-42-62-lbs/2740731958
Yeah, fiberglass is terrible, although I am curious what your reasons for it are. I am honestly shocked at how no one has mentioned this shortcoming despite how viral the larger ozark tents are. I cringe every time I see the larger ozark tents on social media, I just remember the shards of fiberglass breaking off in my palm and cringe.
I think I have the same Taj Mahal Walmart tent. It has like “three rooms”. I can fit like four queen mattresses in it all together and touching though. We absolutely love it. We bring two inflatable mattresses and leave one room as a “storage room” for supplies. You don’t need a stool to put it together. The put up and tear down is easy. I’ve done it alone but it’s obviously easier to do with another person. I second what someone has said above. We went camping with our huge tent and the tent sites were extremely small and we couldn’t fit. We had to upgrade to an RV site at the same campground. Which honestly was great, because it had a long paved “driveway” we kind of positioned it at the end and my kids could drive their bikes on a long flat surface that wasn’t an actual roadway. The only issue you might run into booking an RV site instead of a tent camp site is that you can’t “stake” into a paved area so it has to be a site that has enough green space around it to set up. Highly depends on where you are.
Ya ozark seems to be just as good as Coleman ime. Great for car camping a few times a year.
Their fabric is damn thin. Do not use this tent in rain. You will regret it, I promise.
I have this one which has been great so far. It’s really heavy though. I suppose it doesn’t take up a ton of car space - if they got the6 person version (if there is one) that would probably work out fine. There’s always space under a cot to store stuff also.
For a week of Cub Scout camp in the summer, something you can stand up in to change is good. We’ve used an ozark trail one for the past three summers and been fine, but that’s with a family of four. I’ll thread that one below so this comment doesn’t get deleted if the link gets flagged. For just one parent one scout, we’ve used the done style 4 person tents from Alps and they’re pretty comfy, but even short adults can’t fully stand in them. At that age, most of our cub scouts don’t mind sleeping just in a sleeping bag on the ground (I’m also cubmaster for our small pack). Some families like to use the Coleman quick cabins. These are heavy and don’t do great in high winds, but if you’re driving right up to the campsite they’re super quick to set up and have good head room. Links incoming
