I am not a fan of the Coleman tents . Especially those without a full fly . My experience has been poor performance in heavy rain . They leak at the seams I am not familiar with late summer weather in California. Each choice has ample space for bedding and gear . Each choice has good ventilation for a cabin tent . Honestly, we have has tents from LLBean , REI and Bass Pro shops . Spent way too much money, and we have found the best family tent has been an Ozark Trail 8 man , 2 room tent .. they have a Bathtub bottom made out if tarp material, and they perform very very well . My niece swears by the brand .
I can recommend their tents too, have an older cabin style from atleast 8 years ago. That handled southern arizona heat and monsoons with no issue. Used it very roughly for 6-7 years, then one of the telescoping poles got stuck and ive had it sitting in my garage since. Almost certainly a quick fix but by the time it happened I had other tents as back ups. They're big and heavy but the absolute ease and quickness of setting one up is great. I could do it alone in less than 2 minutes if I didnt stake it down. Always felt like a power move, watching my friends setting theirs up and asking if they needed help.
I'd also recommend an ozark trail instant tent, They're the new coleman from decades past. The average mans tent, for whoever is just getting into the hobby and doesnt want to break the bank. Great for familys who may go camping a handful of times a year in mostly fair weather. They'll last some rough handling for minimum a few years to a decade, plenty of time to get use out of it and upgrade. Any from the instant tent line will be big, bulky, and heavy but quick and easy to set up even if its just one person going it. Ive personally set up a 10 person myself in less than 5 minutes. I've also used mine during souther arizona monsoon storms, high winds and sideways rain and I stayed nice and cozy with room to sit around to relax in unlike a dome tent.
Agree with needing larger than a 6p for that many people plus gear. Ozark Trail 8 person cabin instant tent is good quality and price. I can put it up on my own and have fit 3 adults plus two dogs and gear pretty comfortably. You can make it into two rooms, has built in LED lights, good ventilation and can easily stand up and walk around in it.
That’s the biggest thing, my tent takes 5 mins to setup on the ground so if I wanted to go on a long over landing trip it still works, 9 times out of ten I’m not doing that I’m at a campground and leaving every so often and setting up and taking down every time I want to move is not something I would want to do
[this is roughly the one i have](https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/Ozark-Trail-8-Person-Instant-Cabin-Tent/6000208375642) ozark trail 8 person instant tent
It sets up quick and without nearly causing a divorce 😂 that’s all I really want. If it’s supposed to rain I usually stretch out a tarp anyways, kind of a habit I picked up as a kid camping with my parents. I have Never had expensive tents so idk probably not the best person to review
The Walmart Ozark Trail tents are decent. You won’t get a big one for under $100, but I got our 8 person tent for like $120 I think. I am short so I can stand in it almost straight up.
I have this one which has been great so far. It’s really heavy though. I suppose it doesn’t take up a ton of car space - if they got the6 person version (if there is one) that would probably work out fine. There’s always space under a cot to store stuff also.
We use the Ozark instant up cabin tent, not the popup. We have used it through many rainstorms and many, many scouts putting it up and down. They aren't gentle handling jt. And it has lasted so far through the years. I am 5'2" as well and can put them up easily by myself. We have almost all of the size options of the tent. Pretty easy to pack up as well.
