I have an Ozark trails 2 person tent that I haven't had any issues with, that I've used for week long camping trips in all 4 seasons. However I've found their larger tents 6-8 person tents to be unreliable once the wind picks up or it rains too hard.

An Ozark Trail 2 person backpacking tent is a good pick. But realistically what you will want to consider is how tall she is, as well as is likely to become given the heights of her parents. And if she will be sharing a tent with anyone. As I've found that some knock off brands of kids tents are great 1 person tents for someone who's 6 foot tall. Check the footprint of the tents that you are considering. And be aware that you should always reduce the number of people a tent says it will hold by 1. (Also realistically you should waterproof any tent you buy anyways, just so that you know for sure that they are waterproof.) For extras to get her that depends on the kind of "scouts" that she's in. Near here you would be looking at a 9x9 tarp and a pocket rocket (small camp stove). If scouts is more like cadets, then a 5x7 tarp, a camp knife, and a Ferro rod. Would be the items to get them in addition to the .22lr rifle and rounds.

I actually have purchased 2 of the 2 person version (I bought the 2nd because I simply couldn't find the 1st) and it has done very well for me. I never took it backpacking, but it was surprisingly a decent quality tent that I didn't feel like it was going to be destroyed any time soon (unlike the tigerwall ul I just got. The ul tents are so damn thin it scares me). I think I paid $30 for the Ozark trail tent. Great value for what it is.

This is the perfect tent for a new scout. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-2-Person-Backpacking-Tent-Made-with-Recycled-Polyester-Fabric/906302374? This is a fancy brand if you cant accept that a very cheap tent can be great. https://www.kelty.com/ashcroft-3/ You could get her a decent sleeping pad and bag and pillow.

This will sound insane, but one of my favorite tents is the 70$ Ozark trail backpacking tent. It’s very durable if a bit heavy and for the price you can’t beat it. I’d say there is nothing comparable (From a reputable brand) under 300ish. It’s a one person but still comfortable with a nice vestibule. That said I’m writing this from my sea to summit telus 2. It’s the second trip out, but I love it. A bit lighter than the Ozark and considerably roomier. Given that full price it’s more than 5 times the cost it’s not surprising. I however picked it up at my local sierra trading for an insane discount - I think I may have accidentally robbed them??? If you’re just starting out the Ozark will serve you well till you know what features you really care about. Tents are a lot of personal preference and figuring out what you need. sierra and sometimes dirt cheap can have really great deals both online and for sierra at least in store for high end tents and gear.

Or the Ozark trail backpacking tent at 65$! It’s 3.4lb, survived heavy rain and mild sleet no problem.

Totally agree. I checked out sierra and other deal sites by there are few deals this year. I saw a video where someone said this Ozark trail backpacking tent was their most versatile tent and snapped it up when I saw the price. There’s nothing comparable. Also they sell repair supplies and various other gear for very reasonable prices. Never been a Walmart shopper before but….

I have an Ozark Trail 2-person tent that has served me well on several bikepacking trips. I've used it from early spring to late fall and had no issues, including in the rain. My assessment is that it's a decent cheap starter tent. I don't know how well the larger sizes hold up though.

I grabbed the ozark trails 2 person backpacking tent last fall for $17 on sale. I use that when I go on solo trips and my two kids use it when we all go out.

r/camping • Your child is getting bigger, and wants their own tent. What kind do you get them, and how old are they when you first let them use it? ->
