We just got the RV 5plus. Used it for the first time on the weekend in absolute torrential rain and we stayed completely dry - no fly used and minimal pegs/set up. Downside is it's big and bulky when packed up. Getting it back into the bag was a bit tight Pros, the minimal set up is really quick to set up by yourself Buying Drill pegs make life easier if the ground is hard I'm tempted to look into the drifta bag for it, but hard to justify the price Most importantly wifey was impressed with it
Currently in my RV5 Plus for the last night of a 6 night trip, once again it held up well during storms and the constant winds in this place (Yorke Peninsula)
RV5 plus here, well worth the cost and having to get a 30kg 2m long bag on your roof. There are plenty of spares available of something does break, pretty sure you can buy everything except the actual canvas. I looked into air and instant up tents and they just don't compare, and I love being able to steal off the awning from bugs using the wall kits.
Maybe similar setup times, but the options on the full awning of the Oztent are very handy.
They're not much different when packed.
Yeah I've got the RV5 Plus and it generally holds up well. The only issue I had was when I left camp to go fishing for the day, and the wind turned and really picked up,. It destroyed the awning zip, but they ended up replacing the whole thing under warranty
I got a Drifta bag for mine and I'm not convinced it's worth it, it's great in terms of actually being able to get it into a bag but you're probably better off getting the Oztent Travel Bag for it instead. The canvas is easy to damage, mine has a small hole in it now from a bit of contact with the driveway while I was putting it on the roof of the car. The tent is definitely solid, and the extras like awning walls are a good investment. I've left mine up on a headland during thunderstorms and heavy rain and driven around for the day, and come back with everything dry and in one piece without using the fly. It was mid to high 30s most of that trip and it was easy to cool everything down thanks to all the ventilation options too.
Yeah they're fine, the massive screen front door helps as does the big back window, and the Plus series has a roof panel you can open too. On hot nights it's fine with the little slots at the top of the front panels open along with the side/back windows. The lighter materials heat up a lot easier than canvas.
The tent itself is literally 30 seconds, the awning is a bit more annoying till you get used to it. Youtube it and you'll see how easy it is, I always set mine up solo
Similar here! It looks like we’re stocking an outdoors store haha - we’ve got the rv5 (the one with the skyzone - such a great way to get more airflow!), 2 small hiking tents one better than the other) and swags - pick and choose based on the trip!
I gave in to the “just a couple of hundred more for the plus version with the skylight” thing and have no regrets. It’s heavy but I only have to lift one end at a time to get it on the roof. I’m not sure I would have loved any other tent.
Oztent (rv5 is the one I’ve used). Good strong poles, lots of points to peg out from. If you set up the door facing away from the direction the wind is coming it copes best, but I’ve used it near the beach in super strong squally winds and it held up well.
I 2nd this I’m now transitioning I went from a family tent Blackwolf turbo tent 300 plus as the tent is too big Its a palace but as the kids are older and do their own thing we don’t take it out anymore We then downsized to a darche double swag Both of these are great for car camping but we hike and the last 20 years we’ve done day hikes everywhere we go with the above set up as a base camp and it’s taking me that long to figure out I actually need a hiking tent Both the swag and Blackwolf tents are big take up so much storage space and you need a 4x4 with a flat rack to throw on the roof because neither of them will fit in the boot and that’s the same for the highly recommended oztent rv5 And if I was to purchase this style tent between the oztent and the Blackwolf I’d still go the Blackwolf as I feel the design size style and space and setup is better The swag at 15kg is manageable to throw up there the Blackwolf is like 45kg of pure canvas they both about 1.8m height and about 0.5m wide when packed so storage is a problem I’m now looking at a hiking tent now I get more room than the swag and majority of tents like this pack down to a naglene 1l bottle or about that and weigh 2kg tops What type of areas you’re camping in and the season you intend to go out in most will determine the tent I feel the versatility durability and bomb proofness of the Mont Moondance is a good starting point you can get the mesh inner and then the full nylon inner only for winter separately Its also a traditional set up with poles that you would be used to and later on when more confident and want to learn knots can get a tension tent like the durston x-mid The sleep system is also very important and you will more than likely like the tent get one for summer and winter likewise for sleeping bags/quilts
For bivvy alton, outdoor research, sea to summit 1p tents there’s heaps of choice the beez neez atm is durston x-mid 1 (hiking pole tension tent)and x-dome 1 (semi freestanding and can use trekking poles to strengthen it up) and both these tents claim to be one of the lightest on the market Also not in your price range but is a lot of tent for a 1p is the Mont Moondance around $800 full price it’s more 1.5p lots of space inside for storage and pretty decent vestibule This tent has the highest water rating on the tub floor 25000 and is virtually bombproof It’s freestanding and around 1.5kg or minimum 1.3kg It’s a 3 season that can also change the inner from mesh to full nylon(fn) for colder conditions 4season sub-alpine and the fn can be purchased separately I prefer the freestanding atm I can get to site set up tent and if I don’t like the ground I can pick the tent up and move or change the orientation to suit it better it’s also easier to use on platforms The x-mid is quite large and need a bit of flat ground some thought needs to go in where you set up
I have and have used extensively the OzTent Rv5 with my wife and now 4yo. Set up right, it has been excellent in all seasons.
Piece of cake. I did buy an after market bag for it and now putting it away is also very easy. Mind you, it wasn't hard before.
Oztent RV-5. I ended up destroying one after many many years of lots of travel, and liked it that much I replaced it with another.
