I did a pretty serious hike with just Walmart gear, but I have since upgraded to mostly budget online / Chinese brands. Here's approximately what I have: Tent: Paria Outdoors Arches 2P Trekking Pole Tent / 3FULGEAR Lanshan 2 / Naturehike Cloud Up UL 2P / Naturehike Cloud Up EXT 2P. I have a Lanshan 2 with solid inner as well as the Cloud Up EXT. I think the Arches is a better trekking pole tent if you don't care about having a solid inner. Pad: Walmart CCF + OneTigris NobleJade sleeping pad. Bag: Paria Outdoors Thermodown 30 Down Quilt + I like having a sleeping bag liner for ease of washing. I actually have the 15 degree version. Backpack: Naturehike 60+5L backpack / 3FULGEAR Yue 55 / 3FULGEAR Tianshan. Cooking: Paria and Fire Maple have some good stuff. Trekking poles: I have some CMT ones and some BD ones.
Seems like the best option for a mesh inner double wall tent in this price range.i have the Lanshan 2, but only because I have wanted a solid inner.
Yeah the Paria seems like a way better tent tbh. I don't think the solid inner makes a big difference in terms of temperature. I have another 3 season tent with mesh inner that I've used around 15F or so and I don't think it was noticeable colder than the Lanshan 2 with solid inner. I got the Lanshan 2 last spring / summer to avoid blown in snow. Generally happy with it, but it's very tight for two (smallish) people.
Wish I got the Arches from them instead of the Lanshan. It's a little bigger and roughly the same weight.
If you use trekking poles then your answer Is a trekking pole tent. I have a 1P the One from Gossamer Gear and an Arches 2P from Paria both of these are good value for the cost. Neither one is best in class. Both are sil-nylon which is a PITA when wet but pack down really small.
I recently purchased the paria arches 2p. Basically an oversized lanshan. Only had it out for 1 trip so far. It saw a little bit of rain, condensation wasn't an issue. I was very happy with it. The pros/cons are emblematic of that style of tent. I would say it's a particularly well done version of it that didn't have any obvious flaws to me. So the criticism people have for the style will apply. I would recommend getting some extra dyneema guy lines and two extra stakes to guy out the bigger panels on either side, it helps with head room when laying down.
Nope they come seam taped too. It's pretty much an actually 2 person lanshan that's ready to go out of the box.
Depends a lot on your goals and weight/comfort/price tradeoffs. Currently I'm using a gossamer gear The One( they make a "the two" for couples). I like it a lot. It does have the same complications as other single walled tents however. It's reasonably priced and very lightweight. I believe they are about to release the new version which will have some upgrades. I also had a great experience with the paria outdoors arches 2p. It is an excellent tent for the price ($169) It can sleep me(5'9"@ 215lbs), my daughter (5'@115lbs) and my 90lb dog. It's very similar to a landshan 2p, just with a tad more room and it comes seam sealed. I would describe it like a 2p+. It's not overly heavy(2.75 lbs), is double walled, wide enough for two wide pads and some(53" width and 90" length) line points to pull the head and foot areas out, and to cap it off, the support is USA based and shipping is really fast. Some others that have excellent reputaions on trail to the point I would not hesitate to purchase, but I have no personal experience with: Zapcks duplex, classic or lite. Outside of your stated budget, but the standard for ultra lite 2 person tents. Durston gear Xmid/Xdome. Probably going to be the best mix of weight/durability/ease of use/storm worthy/price. This would be my best recommendation simply from the reputation that the company and products have. Hard to go wrong here. Lanshan/lanshan pro. That paria I have is basically a copy of this, the basic lanshan is smaller that the arches 2p tho. Very good value/price ratio. Big agnes fly creek or tiger wall Didn't initially like these when shopping around. I did get a look at their platinum series last time I was out and I was impressed. Little pricey though.
I love my 2p Paria arches. Essentially a lanshan 2p design that is oversized. I believe a full 10 inches wider and a bit longer. Double walled. We can do 2 people and the dog or two wide pads without stuffing them in. Comes seam sealed and all that. Plus has USA(Colorado) based support I've utilized for one of their sleeping pads and the experience was good.
I got my eyes on a 4 season lanshan for the same reason. I don't think there's a better 4 season for the price. Are you happy with the performance when the temps are low? The reason I was originally sold on the paria for my 3 season 2p was the extra space with minimal weight difference, I'm a big guy and I often have a second (smallish)person and a 110lb dog with me in there. It's a little tight but works as long as I bring my mummy style pads. Just no way to for all of us in a single lanshan.
My Paria Arches 2p has been great for our use. Car camped and backbacked with it several times in a variety of conditions. I recommend their tents regularly.
We got a double quilt and double quilt liner, with a double exped pad and a double trekking pole tent (Pariah outdoors bug bivvy and tarp). It was ultimately very easy, very light, and very comfortable (comparatively).
Get a Pariah outdoor 2p tent. It is easy to set up, has room, and will last you a long time. They can be found for around $150.
Agreed. I have a tent from Paria. Two person tent weighs 3 pounds with the stakes. And cost half that much.
