Who steels a tent?? That’s shitty! Ehhhh, i would shop rei or a local outfitter. Maybe even used locally?? If you love camping you are going to use it a lot. And the items you use a lot you want to last and enjoy using them. I’m not sure if they are around anymore but I have an old Easton Rimrock 2 person tent I used for years. (Yes, the sporting good company famous for their aluminum baseball bats and arrows.) I bought it from rei on clearance for $100 back in like 2013. I took it all over the world solo and with my now wife. I set it up and broke it down 2-300 times. Super strong pole systems, ripstop fabric, zippers never jam and small/light enough to backpack with (which I did). In that time only one thing broke on it. 1/4 velcro loops on the fly cover tore off. But I would recommend trying out tents before you buy. Either new or used. You can see which ones are the best for you. If you are wanting to do backpacking I would check reviews online. In 2021 my wife and I ended up buying an rei half dome SL3+ to give her a bit more room, and save her from the funky stench of my old rimrock. But it’s not as nice. It was nearly 3x the cost with 25% off sale. The zippers jam on the fabric so easily, and the pole system is frustrating/does not pack down well. Maybe their 2p version is better?? IDK

REI SL 3p. I'm 6'7" and it works fantastic. I smashed one on sale and only use that for backpacking.

We do REI Half Dome 3+ because we have a large dog and cat we bring with us. Perfect for big space, can have our packs inside plus animals and room for our own sleeping pads and sleeping bags. We split the weight, one takes the tent and rain fly and the other the poles. Works perfectly.

r/CampingGearAre there any good tents specifically designed around keeping a cool temperature?

I have an REI three-person backpacking tent. Most of the tents that REI carries have a separate rainfly. Without the rainfly, the roof and walls of the tent are just mosquito netting. I camp in the desert where nighttime temperatures can get ridiculous sometimes, but the mosquito netting lets a breeze flow through. Insects don't buzz by my ears, and I can also look at the stars at night from inside the tent. And that's heavenly.

Oh yeah 2nd the 3 person if you can swing it and will have the room setting it up. I used a half dome 2+ for several seasons and upgraded to the 3p version a few years ago. We only sleep two in there but that extra room sure is nice. I don’t know about the current half dome 3p but at least ours, the fly can also roll up to the top of the tent so you can get really good ventilation but still be able to redeploy the fly if needed.

RIP Eureka. I mostly car camp and have camped my whole life. I bought my first Eureka tent in 1989. The waterproofing on the fly is failing but it is still a fantastic tent. I took an inexpensive 3 person REI tent on an 8 week cross country car camping trip, and it performed better than anticipated in a variety of conditions. I currently camp with my partner and 2 Golden Retrievers in an 8 person Eureka ans it is the bomb. Plenty of room to stand in and the two dogs have plenty of room. Over time your needs might change, so buy a quality tent that meets your current needs but you don’t need to break the bank.

Our 3 person REI tent is great for us and our dog to snuggle up. I guess it just depends if you like your space or not

r/CampingGearGearlabs top 19 tents are all 200$+. One is even over a thousand. Are those of ua getting the 70$ amazon special really buying junk?!

Me too, I have the half dome plus for trips where packing volume matters but weight is not an issue and also because it is more roomy and made of more robust fabrics. I do a fair amount of trips that start with a flight so a lighter tent that takes up less room is a must. Copper Spur is perfect though I have also used a 20+ pound REI Kingdome when space was less of an issue.
