Disclaimer: I’m not a super ultralight person, I just like to learn from this sub on places I’m willing to shed weight and ignore it or laugh at it in places where I’m not willing. I’ve packed in a 2 and 4 year old a few miles and about 1000’ elevation. If you want to get anywhere, you are probably carrying them. Meaning you get to add maybe 20-50lbs to your load depending on the size of your kid(s). You also probably don’t want to be too far in so you can get them out if the trip really goes poorly. All that to say weight may not be your biggest priority, you’re probably going to be heavy and not covering tons of ground anyway. I used a seek outside redcliff (6p tipi style tent, something like 4-5 lbs so around 1lb/occupant and my wife and I each carried about 2-2.5 lbs of the shelter) for the four of us and a dog. In hindsight, I’m really glad I did it. Kids don’t sit still so the large, standing height tent was great and still very light for what it is. The downside was that you need a big area to pitch it so you want to know you’ll be able to set it up. We were not ultralight at all. Lots of extra clothes (two year old peed/shit all the clothes we brought). The adults each have half a tent, a stove, a filter, two bags and pads, two sets of clothes, including very excessive toddler clothes, two sets of jackets…. It’s a lot of stuff to be prepared with kids. The kids packed a little water, stuffed animal to sleep with, and a little trowel to play in the dirt. It was a blast but not a long hike, not fast, not easy, and not light. Probably one of the best trips I’ve ever done.

If you care about weight for backpacking, take a look at a seek outside redcliff with their large ti stove. The way mine is set up weighs about 6 lbs. I’ve put it through a lot of use and it’s held up great
