Came to suggest a Shiftpod. No way you could sit in a tent during the day in any kind of warm climate. An electric hookup and an AC unit in a Shiftpod would be the way to go for sure.
They are beasts. Can attest probably the only things standing after that crazy 65 mph dust storm. Shade structure, fucked. Regular tents fucked. I took shelter in an RV and we thought it might fall over. Then it's okay, we can fix this, and then 3 days of rain. We did fix. Everything was wet except my boutique. We busted out dry clothes for everyone. It's not for the faint of heart. The shift pods, all good. We lost one solar panel. It fell on its face. That was a trip. Yet we are returning. I'm probably renting an RV. I'm too old for this shit. 16 years so far. I want 20. At least. And 2 sisters in their 40s don't look like burners. No tattoos, clean driving records, wear glasses. We look like skinny nerds. Shift pod away. Someone would love it. Hugs
My friend is from Wyoming. He has a canvas military tent and he covers it with old blankets. He's ratchet, but wicked smart. Hugs
If money is no object? Shiftpod. Ceiling under $1000? Eskimo ice fishing tent. Budget budget? Vevor knockoff of the Eskimo tent. More flexibility and space but also more time-consuming setup? E-Z UP with the zippered tent sides. I do a lot of field work, these are the most popular choices if we're not working off of a truck. No matter what you get, portable AC and a space heater will be a necessity. For the desk, the classic plastic folding table is usually the best, but if you need a smaller stored size, there's some roll-up aluminum ones that can raise up to working height. Ergonomic chair is tough but they do make some folding ones, they tend to fold flat so they take up a decent amount of space when stored. Standard camping chairs might sit a bit too low to work at a table, definitely test them out before buying.
My shiftpod 2 had minor mold issues that I've since corrected and it handled the burn/rain excellently. While I was going through the mold issues asking for advice and if they had some kind of replacement program their support just ghosted me. Friends shiftpod 3 had its poles break before the burn and the company refused to do anything about it. New camp mate had the new expedition and seemed to not have troubles with it. Unfortunately the shift pods in general you need to kind of baby and they seem to have a good number of minor failure points if things go wrong. They don't explain all the anti-mold stuff you need to do. And their support is god awful, worst I've seen from any company. I really love mine but there's so many caveats to it and it's a shame.
For me it's been a balance of needing to transport and set up quickly, and a deep desire to have a super comfy base that was built up and refined over time. I was never able to throw much money at my setup, but over the years you improve. The Shiftpod worked amazing as a reliable shelter since launch. It survived every bit of weather build and burn week every year since 2015 threw at it. Over time, I added an overhead shelter/shade, sidewalls for the same, and an AC unit that is a luxury baby burner me could scarcely imagine. That said, I'm looking to replace with either another shiftpod - OR - a canvas kodiak. Hexayurts are exceedingly awesome and easy enough to set up especially if multiple in your camp/crew have the same. Fewer folks seem to be using them but theyre awesome. Don't underestimate what a monkey hut can do over your setup either, whatever tent you decide. See you out there dirtbag!
