Coming from an SMD Trekker, I just got into an SMD Owyhee, on extreme sale, for more room. Also, bought a Haven Net Tent for an insane price, $100, to use with the Owyhee. It fits and ties into the tarp through the 3D UL groundsheet clips if I ever want to open it up in buggy conditions. I looked at the deschutes as well with the serenity net tent but just wanted a little more room.
Six Moon Designs Haven tarp and inner tent bundle are 34 ounces. We leave the inner tent attached to the tarp so this always functions as a tent. Has endured many a wind and rain storm over the years, and is bulletproof. Quite roomy, and leaving one door open at night, no condensation. Not well known, have never seen another Haven tent on our thru hikes.
I use an MSR2 tent. It's not a popular one, but I absolutely love it. I backpack with my dog in all weather and it has been amazing. If you want cheap, I thru hiked with a Naturehike and loved it. I just went in a different direction with this one. I also have a 6 Moons design tarp tent and I use it during the summer only. Word of caution on trekking pole tents: if your trekking pole breaks (and I saw it happen) then you're screwed until you get new poles.
It comes seam sealed too! The more I read about dyneema fabric (dcf), the more negatives I hear about it...loud, breaks down if repeatedly folded in the same places, it's pretty transparent, etc. If you want to go a little lighter and a little more expensive, and you like the 2 person with trekking pole design, the Haven by Six Moons is really nice. They were having a pretty good sale on them a couple months ago on their older stock.
I brought my Six Moon Designs on a PCT thru hike and absolutely loved it. If you plan on backpacking and use trekking poles, it's a great choice. If you're doing more car camping, I have a cheap pop-up tent from Amazon for that and it sets up in about 1 minute. For car camping, the easier the better IMO.
I’ve got a Six Moons trekking pole tent I like. Not the lightest but won’t break the bank either.
IMO, many small manufacturers offer much better designed tents than anything at REI. Tarptent, Gossamer Gear, Six Moon Designs, Durston Gear. They generally have high end tents for $600+ which are super light, but also have $300 tents that are almost as light - certainly nothing like 5 lbs. I have two Tarptents and a Six Moon Designs and they are both top notch in design and manufacturing.
