I haven't used a CS but per the photos it has a decently long crossbar but not all the way to making the sidewall vertical like the X-Dome. It looks like it stops about 4" shy. The bigger difference is that the CS is shorter (interior height of 38" vs 42"). So approximately the comparison is a vertical 42" door versus a sloping 38" door. That would likely be a noticeable difference. Something better than the CS for ease of access that is in stock now is the SlingFin Portal 1. That has vertical sidewalls and a 41" tall interior, so it would be almost as tall as the X-Dome.
r/Ultralight • Looking for free standing 1 person tent. ->For one additional pound, I recommend the Slingfin Portal 1 with the optional DAC 10.65 mm poles, which are necessary for strong winds. If you are expecting heavy rain, you’ll want to seam seal it too.
r/WildernessBackpacking • Recs for an ultralight freestanding tent that’s durable and wind/rain proof? ->Yeah. It comes with one set of internal guys on one end and you can easily add another set to the other end. Edit: And you can use them no matter which set of poles you’re running.
r/WildernessBackpacking • Recs for an ultralight freestanding tent that’s durable and wind/rain proof? ->The Portal 1 with the 10 mm poles is 2 lb, 14.1 oz (minimum weight, not including stakes). That’s amazing for what you get. I would be very concerned about taking a sub-2 pound tent; the Dientes Circuit is commonly recognized as the southernmost hike in the world and is only hiked by approximately 2k people each year. It’s remote, rocky, and very windy at times, and is definitely a place where gear failure can threaten your safety if you’re not with a group. If it were me, I’d either test my Portal setup in 25 mps winds (55 mph) before I’d decide on taking it (because you need to practice and evaluate the entire process of setting up and taking down the tent in high winds), or, if I didn’t have a chance to test it and get my setup dialed in, I would take a Hilleberg Soulo with double poles (or possibly custom poles), because it’s more forgiving of less than stellar setups. I’ve seen ultralight tents collapse in much weaker winds, and when you combine wind with campsites where it’s difficult to get bomber anchors, you’re just asking for trouble with them in my view. This is southern hemisphere tundra, and it needs the right gear for the conditions.
r/WildernessBackpacking • Recs for an ultralight freestanding tent that’s durable and wind/rain proof? ->Thanks, that goes on to the list! The Portal 1P looks ... quite similar to the Dome 1P, to be honest. With the HD poles, some headroom is lost though right, because it lacks the swivel at the top? Or can the one from the regular poles be reused? The 2P looked nice (much more space, 7cm more head room, only +180g!) until I noticed that they have shortened the floor :-/
r/Ultralight • Light alternative to the Soulo/Akto tents? ->I have a Slingfin Portal 1p that I am extremely happy with. Great tent, small footprint
r/Ultralight • Seeking a tent ideal for wood platforms in the northeast ->I think the Slingfin portal is worth every penny. You can also get the heavy duty pole set if the winds are really high. If you can find a reseller or order directly it’s worth it.
r/Ultralight • Looking for UL freestanding tent with trekking pole option ->You can pitch fly first if you have the footprint. I just pitched it inner first and did so quickly and I didn’t have much of a problem. The tent did extremely well in Iceland and has done well for me here in the states.
r/Ultralight • Looking for UL freestanding tent with trekking pole option ->I had 14 hours of rain in Iceland this year with zero issues. The sil/sil fly handled it extremely well. The fly dries quickly as well. Had winds of 45 mph as well and it was a rock. Bomber tent
r/Ultralight • Looking for UL freestanding tent with trekking pole option ->I did. I’m sure it would have been ok with the standard poles but I opted for the piece of mind. My tent didn’t move.
r/Ultralight • Looking for UL freestanding tent with trekking pole option ->Slingfin portal 1p (get the heavy duty pole set for bad weather). I used it on the Laugevegar trail and the winds were consistent 50mph and the tent was bomber.
r/Ultralight • Light alternative to the Soulo/Akto tents? ->I don’t notice any difference in headroom. With the design choices they made it’s a rock solid tent and the interior guylines are not a gimmick, they stabilize the tent. Outrigger attachments do exactly what they are intended to do. It all works together very nicely. Obviously I am a Slingfin fanboy but it’s seriously a great tent.
r/Ultralight • Light alternative to the Soulo/Akto tents? ->Slingfin Portal 1p is above the budget but is bombproof and still lightweight. Buy once cry once as you said
r/Ultralight • Single Person Tent suggestions based on specific criteria ->Worth every penny. I’m a huge Slingfin fan
r/Ultralight • Single Person Tent suggestions based on specific criteria ->This is a solid answer. It weighs more but for a comfortable night sleep it’s worth it. Mine has over 100 nights pitched and it’s had zero leaks. Like they said, seam seal it, but it’s a good tent.
r/WildernessBackpacking • Recs for an ultralight freestanding tent that’s durable and wind/rain proof? ->He did say that it will be as wind-worthy as a slingfin portal. It's probably something like a 3.5 season tent. I actually have a slingfin portal 1p I just put up for sale if you're interested!
r/Ultralight • Ultralight backpackers and four-season dome tents? ->Second the Slingfin Portal! Easy setup, comfy, effing bombproof!
r/Ultralight • Ultralight (ish) tent that can deal with wind ->I mean I haven't been to Iceland so take this with a grain of salt, but based on the wind speed data it seems to me that a tent that can withstand 100km/h winds is maybe overkill. Yes its windy, but that parameter is going to drive up your tent weight astronomically. I've used the MSR Access in pretty intense conditions, it weighs in around 1.64kg. The Portal Slingfin is another one that is quite sturdy. I'd also look at maybe a mid style tent? As far as weight goes I guess its a choice of nice to bike with vs nice to be sleep with. If I were trying to ride somewhere like iceland and wanted a sleep system for 100kmh+ winds I might contemplate a bivy type scenario!
r/bikepacking • What about the Salewa Litetrek Pro tent? ->Check out the sling fin portal. Not ultralight but not much different than the hubba hub a
r/Ultralight • Ultralight (ish) tent that can deal with wind ->It’s pretty bomb proof, especially with trekking poles for the weight. I had it in a bad storm in AL a couple weeks ago and it handled it well. Taking it out in bears ear on Tuesday. Expecting high winds. Glad I have it
r/Ultralight • Ultralight (ish) tent that can deal with wind ->No. The Nemo Hornet is a great tent, but from experience it does not stand up to high winds. We got a Slingfin portal for those conditions and love it.
r/WildernessBackpacking • Recs for an ultralight freestanding tent that’s durable and wind/rain proof? ->From experience, the Nemo Hornet does not stand up to heavy winds. We bought a slingfin portal for high wind conditions and love it.
r/WildernessBackpacking • Recs for an ultralight freestanding tent that’s durable and wind/rain proof? ->I have a Nemo Hornet and love it, but from experience it does not stand up to heavy winds. We got a Slingfin Portal2 for trips with high exposure to heavy winds and love it. This summer we had it out during a storm with extreme winds and the fly barely riffled while in the meantime we had to take our shelter tarp down for fear the wind would rip it to shreds.
