First spin with the TT Dipole 1 DW (in the Maritime Alps) and whaddya know?! The grosgrain that holds a lineloc at the end of the tent simply snapped. Iβm using the small O-ring that would hold a trekking pole tip to hold the line in place. Iβll have another look at it tomorrow in the daylight. Heavy rain forecast for later in the week. Hope the injured Dipole holds up!
This is a very interesting discussion. Thanks to both u/Tarptent_ and u/Physical_Relief4484 for this. A couple of thoughts on both sides: 1. I was very glad that the floor on my Dipole 1 DW was 30D silnylon when a storm forced me to pitch in a less than ideal spot over rocks. The astonishing toughness of the 30D was very much appreciated. I'm a big fan of the top shelf sil/sil fabrics that TT uses and that played a big role in my purchase decision vs competitors' offerings. Because of the weight, however, the Dipole 1 DW isn't my go to shelter and if my budget would only allow one or two choices, the Dipole wouldn't be in consideration. 2. As Phys says, we in the UL community are definitely jonesing for a woven, non-DCF fabric tent with specs and price under the limits described by Phys. For a company like TT with a global reach and an incredible customer service policy, I can see how going with significantly less durable -- but inevitably very expensive -- woven fabrics (like 7D or 10D sil/sil) would be an expensive, time-consuming proposition on the CS side of things. Sooooo, why not **create a separate line of TT products** transparently marketed with a limited warranty and clear durability limits? 10D is almost stupid light for a floor (not to mention environmentally unsound), but a lot of people are willing to accept that in exchange for a lighter pack.
I like a double wall because I hate condensation dripping on me then freezing. Bought a Tarptent Dipole 1 DW. About 2 lbs. Plenty of other models as well. Popular in cold, wet and windy northern Europe climates as well.
All Tarptent tents have end struts, which makes them good for tall people. I'm 6'4" and have a Dipole, I love it. Plenty of room.
I'm only 6'4", I have a dipole 1, I have probably 8" of extra space , you should be fine. Tarptent has these little poles at the ends of the tent which makes the space much more usable than many tents. Tarptents are trecking pole tents that are single wall. They are lighter than free-standing tents. I paid extra for the 'ultralight' version, but they have a normal/sil-poly version that is more affordable. I love my tent, but you have to decide if you want a single wall tent or not.
Many Tarptents have end struts (little poles that are ~2' tall) that go on the ends of the tent creating a lot more usable space. I'm 6'4, and wear size 13 shoe and fit in my dipole 1 Li with headroom to spare. I think the non-Li version is the same size. The dipole is a very similar tent to the durston, but I think it's a little heavier. I love my dipole. I also have an old version of the Protrail. It's a bit lighter, but not as roomy.
Iβm rocking dipole and love it.
This is inaccurate. Ultralight does not mean making these sacrifices. There are well designed and poorly designed ultralight tents, though there are fewer and fewer poorly designed products given how few customers there are and the amount of research a typical consumer does. Modern fabrics have absurd strength for their weight. Modern ultralight tents can be as feature rich, weather resistant, well ventilated and roomy as a heavier tent. Compare the Xdome and Tarptent dipole with a heavier tent; there is no trade off other than cost (and in the case of the xdome, even that isnβt true).
Alpkit tarptent, can become a 2 person if you want it to but as a 1p you have loads of space
Do you hike with poles? If so, the single-walled Zpacks Hexamid can be set up with your hiking poles and is USD $499. My Zpacks single-walled tents perform poorly in rainy, humid conditions but making this compromise will save you weight. Tarptent makes several double-walled tents for less than USD $500 that perform well, and there are also some excellent Chinese-made Lanshan tents on Aliexpress. My double-walled Tarptent performs much better than my single-walled Zpacks tents when it's set up, but it's also much heavier to carry.
